It was on a Saturday, Anna was at home as usual, after cleaning the house and feeling satisfied at how clean it looks, she stood beside the kitchen counter, hands on her waist as she grimaced at how everywhere in the kitchen sparkled.
“C’est finis.” She smiled sheepishly and proceeded to go out for groceries shopping, when Anna opened the door, just as the older woman was about to knock, she looked at the woman like she was in the wrong house.
“Anna Woods?”
“Yes ma’am.” She nodded, she could see irritation written all over the woman face.
“Do you want to come in?” Anna asked politely.
The older woman pushed past her and enter the house, scrunching her nose whether in disgust or the house smells too nice.
“So this is where you live?” The older woman said, eyeing the house and demonstrating with her hands to say the house was small for her liking.
“Yes, this is where I live.” Anna answered.
“In this cubicle.”
“The cubicle gives me joy.”
“I’m sure my son bought it for you.”
“I pay my own rent, Ma’am, who are you? You can’t just barge into my house and hurl insult at me.” Anna said, her tone stern.
“Oh! She’s a sharp mouthed one.” The older woman laughed, her body guard standing at the door chuckled.
Anna hissed.
“I am Mrs. McArthur,”
I should have known. Anna thought.
“And I’m here to give you a strict warning you must adhere to.”
Anna folds her arms over her chest, because of Allen she has had a few enemies, first Evelyn and now, his mother, only God knows who else.
“My son is not your caliber.”
“I never said he was.” Anna interrupted her, the bodyguard smacked her neck from behind, Anna turned and slapped him hard on his face, and moved away from the both of them.
“Don’t even dare come close.” Anna warned.
Mrs. McArthur told him to stand down and faced Anna. “Listen to me, you have to leave my son or I’m not gonna be nice to you, if you don’t want me to be your worse nightmare, stay away from Allen, and for you to do that, resign from working at the McArthur’s company and you will be safe.”
Anna scoffed.
“Old woman, so you came all the way to warn me to stay off your son, news flash, I have, I’m done with him.”
“One more thing, prostitute, that child you’re carrying, two options, terminate or do whatever you want with it when it’s born, my son won’t father a bastard.”
Anna was confused, “headline, I’m not pregnant for your son or anyone else, so be rest assured, you can do whatever you want with you son.”
“I like her.” Mrs. McArthur laughed, “Feisty.” She added and stopped laughing. “Stay away from everything that concerns Allen.”
“You have my words.” Anna said.
“He would be better off with Evelyn.” Mrs. McArthur spoke with pride.
“I wish them the best of life.” Anna smiled.
“Lest I forget,” she started, rummaging through her bag for her cheque book, “I know you’re poor and you want a better life, allow me to be nice.” She said and dropped the cheque on the chair.
“That should be enough to cater for your needs.” She said and left with her bodyguard trailing behind her.
Anna slowly crouched down to the floor, holding the cheque in her hand, it was a lot of money but deep down she knew wouldn’t cash it out, she held the check and went to her room, keeping it her diary book, since it has no date on her, she could cash it out anytime.
Her day was ruined, in her entire life, this was the most helpless she had been and useless, that she couldn’t fight for herself. Not like she couldn’t fight for herself, but this is war, war that she has no power, fame or money to win, she would be eliminated without second thoughts. She wanted to cry, she wanted to call Allen and tell him everything, maybe he would help her, Anna decided against it, she didn’t want to be seen as weak and she also didn’t want to cause more troubles for herself.
After so much thinking, she decided that it was best she quit working for Allen, she didn’t need to show up at the office to pack her things or dropped off her badge.
All she has to do is tender her resignation letter through email to Allen and whether or not he understands, it was none of her business.
Her life was in shambles, her career for sure was now on hold, because she has to find another job and start all over again, this time by herself.
After Anna had sent her resignation to Allen’s email, she exhaled deeply and stretched her numb limbs, she realized she still has to go for groceries shopping or she would staff.
Outside the door, Evelyn was on her porch, ready to knock, Anna stood in front of her to stop her from going further.
“Hi Anna,” Evelyn smiled, “you didn’t show up at the diner yesterday.”
“Evelyn, please. Stay away from me. I don’t want to be your friend and I don’t want to have anything to do with you. I have finally left Allen for you just to stay clear of your trouble and mother In law, Mrs. McArthur trouble too. Please have a nice life with Allen.” Anna said and walked away, not bothering hear Evelyn out.
“Get the hell out of my porch.” Anna yelled behind her as she walked away.
Evelyn was angry, her plan had been ruined and it was because of Allen’s mother, for a minute, every regretted going to meet the woman, she didn’t think she would come this far to threaten Anna thereafter ruining her own plans.
She entered her car and changed the direction to her mother’s old house, she go there and went down to the basement, turning on the light, she would take out her anger on Tanya and Stoner.
“Well done boys,” she praised the thugs she hired to do the dirty job.
“Please, let us go, we won’t tell the police anything.” Tanya begged, crying.
“Don’t beg.” Stoner said, eyeing Evelyn.
From the tank top Tanya was wearing, one could make out a baby bump and Evelyn went numb at the sight of it, her anger rising more, she moved closer to Tanya and whisper to her ear, loud and clear.
“Prepare to lose your pumpkin.” She smiled wickedly and pointed to her stomach.
