‘Be a good man?’
Nina looked at him in disbelief.
Right then, Doug walked to the lobby. Once seeing Robin, he bowed at Robin and greeted him with a smile, “Nice to see you again, Sir.”
“Sir?”
Nina was shocked. In the past, whenever Doug came to her, he was arrogant and aggressive, followed by fierce-looking gangsters.
However, he talked humbly to Robin.
“She wants to talk to you, Doug.”
Robin pointed at Nina.
“Uh… Right. Right. I want to return the money I borrowed. Earlier, I borrowed 100, 000 dollars from you. I can pay back 80, 000 dollars today. About the interest…”
Nina broke off in embarrassment.
Within less than a month, she owed Doug 600, 000 dollars.
Doug immediately flicked his hand. “No interest. I quit usury already. We all want to be good men. As for 80, 000 dollars…”
He glanced at Robin, and the latter hinted at him in response.
“I’ll accept your money then. Please keep the rest 20, 000 dollars as an apology. I went to your university every day and bothered you back then. Sorry for that,” Doug replied kindly with a cheeky smile.
Nina was indeed confused. After leaving the casino, she still looked baffled. In the end, she looked at Robin in doubt, “What’s wrong with him? Why did he fawn over me? Was it because of you?”
“Didn’t you hear that? He said he would change and be a good man.”
“I don’t buy it.”
Nina rolled her eyes at him, believing it must have something to do with Robin. However, Robin refused to tell her the truth, so she didn’t insist on asking him. However, she got along better with him than earlier.
A few hours ago, Nina detested him.
Although she still disliked him, she believed Robin was much better than the scumbag who had dumped his wife and daughter.
“By the way, you are with me now. Why don’t you buy some snacks? Let’s go to the orphanage to visit the children. I have an appointment with them today, but I have to wait for the surgery to end. You can go to the orphanage on my behalf.”
“Call me dearest brother-in-law first.”
Nina glared at him. “Bastard! You always take advantage of me. All right. Dear brother-in-law. Happy now? Just go. I’ll tell Elise you bully me.”
“You are wrong. You always bully me.”
Robin’s lips twitched.
Nina was arrogant, but Robin was intrigued. However, he could tell she was a decent girl. At least she was kind to the orphans and helped them.
Therefore, they parted at an intersection.
Robin bought some snacks and went to Sunshine Orphanage. Once he entered, he found the children were doing housework.
“Excuse me…”
Robin talked to a boy, but the latter ran away instantly, seemingly scared. He tossed his sweep away and fled.
“Am I that fierce?”
Robin grazed his face in confusion. He believed he was decent-looking, wondering why the boy was scared away.
Then he walked forward, holding bags of snacks. By accident, he passed by the canteen of this orphanage. Seeing the ingredients in the kitchen, he frowned. “The cabbages are rotten. The potatoes sprouted. The piece of meat is molded. It turns out those kids are eating such food. No wonder several of them got sick.”
Suddenly, he heard a child crying in the yard.
Robin rushed over, only to find a robust mid-aged woman beating a boy with a stick. The boy huddled up on the ground while weeping.
“Stop it!” Robin snapped angrily.
“Who are you?”
The mid-aged woman stopped, looking at him. She snorted impatiently, “I’m a nursing worker at this orphanage. This boy doesn’t do housework. I’m teaching him a lesson. It’s none of your business. You’d better leave.”
Then she raised the stick and was about to hit the boy again.
However, she failed. Robin grabbed the stick and bit out icily, “I said stop it.”
He dragged her away.
Robin helped the boy stand up, seeing him around five or six in dirty clothes. With tears all over his cheeks, he dared not look at Robin. Robin also found a lot of wounds on his body.
“Don’t be afraid, boy. I’m here. No one dares to bully you again.”
Robin rubbed his hair and passed a few snacks to him. “Have some.”
“Thank you…”
The boy took over the snacks, staring up at Robin. “Mister, are you Nina’s friend? Only Nina and her classmates will give us snacks.”
When he talked about Nina, Robin noticed his eyes lit up.
He realized that Nina had done an excellent job in taking care of the orphans.
“Gee… It turns out you are sent by Nina Houry. It’s so generous of her to find you. Did she ask you to spend much money to cure those rug rats?”
The mid-aged woman understood who had sent Robin and mocked, “If you are wealthy, you should save your money instead of wasting it on those little pricks.”
Icy filled Robin’s eyes. However, he looked down at the boy and asked, “Boy, why did she hit you?”
“I have an appointment with Nina to meet here. The nursing worker came to ask me, and I answered her. Then she hit me.”
The boy sniffed.
Robin looked at the mid-aged woman.
Planting her hands on her hips, she retorted, “It’s time for him to do housework. He can’t stay here. I’m a nursing worker here. I have the right to teach those rug rats.”
“Housework? Aren’t you nursing workers supposed to do it? Those kids are only five or six.”
Robin recalled the scene in the lobby. All children were doing housework and dodged when they saw someone unknown. He could tell they have been often frightened.
“We do it? Humph! No one wants those little pricks, so they stay in the orphanage. We adopted them all and kept them alive. We raise them, and we let them survive. They should be thankful.”
The mid-aged woman broke off and exhaled. Then she added naturally, “Now they’ve grown up. They should do the housework and obey our rules. They must be obedient to us.”
