Chapter 49

Kayden’s POV
“Come over here Kayden.” mum called.
“Mum.” I groaned.
“You are here for a vacation not to work,” she replied.
“I just have to do this, I really can’t let go of this,” I replied and she sighed deeply, letting go of me.
She probably just knew enough that I would not be giving in to her requests, it has been this way for years now. I do find no interest in vacations, wasting time.
My mind slowly drifted away from what I was working on to Mantha.
“She must be doing well,” I said to myself, perhaps in an attempt to assure myself that she was completely safe.
If she was in any form of danger, she would give me a call.
“Hey, Lauren is on the call.” mum called out to me and I finally put away my laptop.
I wasn’t going to her to talk to Lauren randomly, definitely not but then maybe from Lauren I could know how Mantha, my object of mystery was doing.
I walked over to mum, my two hands buried deep in my pockets touching the cold phone in it.
“Hey, good morning Alpha Kayden,” Lauren said with a huge smile on her face. It was a video call and that I kind of did not want.
I wasn’t in the mood to see her face particularly but then I was still kind of propelled to get into the call.
“How is everyone over there?”
“Mantha?” She asked.
“Samantha… Samantha, I mean.” she stuttered.
“She is completely fine,” Melissa replied.
“How about you demand to see her?” Jay asked me and I almost gave in but I cancelled the thoughts.
That would seem desperate, that would seem like she is someone special to me.
“No Jay,” I replied to him and left mum to go back to my job.

Samantha’s POV
We both began cleaning up with little strength in the both of us but we knew that it was a futile effort, it would make us not the whole day but two days to finish cleaning this entire place up.
I looked at Cassie who also gave me that kind of look that told me she also knew that this was an impossible task.
She looked extremely tired and her stomach grumbled from time to time, I threw my hands around her shoulders.
“Let’s just try to clean it up,” I said to her.
“We are not going to eat anyways, even if we do clean it up,” Cassie grumbled.
“This is all my fault, Cassie… If not for me, you would not be….”
“Don’t talk that way, it’s all the fault of that witch, that demon,” Cassie said with the gritting of her teeth.
“When we’re done cleaning up this place, let’s go into the garden, there’s a huge tree laden with lots of oranges there, let’s have some,” Cassie suggested.
“Cool idea!”
“What are you then talking about? Your chores are not enough?” Miss. Melissa asked and we both quickly went into cleaning.
“I thought all the maids went on a vacation but then even the assistant leader of the maids is deprived of the opportunity, such a poor assistant head.” Cassie chuckled softly and I smiled, shaking my head slightly.
“Good morning Samantha.” it was Cara.
“Good morning Cara.”
My mind slowly drifted away from Cara to Alpha Kayden as I cleaned the utensils absentmindedly.
“Do you miss him?” Cara asked.
“What do you mean? I… I… I was just thinking that if he… If he was here, all this won’t be happening, right?” I asked.
“Sure it all won’t happen but then I still do feel that you are missing him in another way” Cara replied.
“Al… Alpha Kayden is… He is a good man, he looks cold and brutal but then he is still a good man, you remember the… The time he held my waist and… And almost kissed me?”
“I said so! You are missing him.” Cara said.
“No Cara!” I refused but I knew that my words to her had sounded just that way.
“Hey, let’s get done with cleaning up,” Cassie said to me when she noticed that I was not really cleaning but just playing with the cleaning equipment.
“Oh, of course,” I said with a nervous smile and when I looked up, Cassie was sweating, sweating terribly, the mansion was a fully air-conditioned one and that made it even more strange.
“Are you okay Cassie?” I asked her.
“I am… I am fine.” she stuttered a reply.
I placed my palm over her forehead and it was burning hot, her body shuddered slightly.
“Cassie, you are feeling sick.” I pointed out.
“No, I am not sick, I would be fine in a few minutes… I just need to finish cleaning this place and then have the oranges,” she replied.
“No, you have to rest,” I said to her, helping her onto a chair.
“This chair is not meant for maids,” she said to me.
“C’mon, there is no other chair present here, right?” I asked her and she slowly nodded.
“But then I could still clean, I am not that weak, I can’t leave you to do the cleaning all yourself” she insisted and I took the cleaning rag from her.
“You have to sit here, I would do the cleaning,” I said to her.
“Do not get up,” I warned her and she nodded with a small smile.
I went back to cleaning, sure I was tired also but then I have been used to being tired all my life already.
I focused on cleaning, avoiding discussing with Cara.
I dropped the cleaning rags and grabbed the broom, I was still sweeping when I heard a heavy thud.
I ran back to the spot where I left Cassie and there she was on the floor.
“Cassie!” I called in shock and ran to her side.
“Cassie.” I shook her body and her lids opened slowly.
“I… I am too tired.” she groaned and I knew I had to do something.
I could not let her go just like I let go of Granny back then.
“The orange tree in the garden.” I gasped.
“Cassie, I would be back soon,” I said to her and ran out to the garden.
I got to the garden and stared at the tall orange tree, the oranges sure looked ripened and juicy but then it was too tall.
“I can’t let go of Cassie,” I mumbled and began climbing up the tree.
I had to do this to save Cassie, the harsh bark of the tree scratched my skin but the oranges were the only thing I paid attention to.
I grabbed the first one and a smile spread across my lips, I grabbed more of it and was just about to get down when I heard Miss. Lauren’s voice.
“Samantha!” Her voice was filled with venom.
“I… I” I stuttered not knowing what to say.
“You’d better get down here right now!” She ordered, her eyes blazing.
Her blazing eyes sent fear into me making me lose my balance.
With a loud and heavy thud, I fell to the floor, head hitting against a stone.
My eyes shut, plunging me into darkness.
