Chapter 23

Book:Save Me Mate Published:2024-5-1

Samantha’s POV
“Mantha feel at ease” I heard his voice soft without the usual time of rudeness and harshness, this was soft, even for someone soft, this was extra soft.
I looked up at him with surprise written on my face, that was a mistake, I should never have looked up at him. He was looking at me intently too.
How in the world would Alpha Kayden have spoken so softly? This was just totally unbelievable! If someone else had told me about this, I would never have believed it but no! I just heard that incredibly soft voice from him with my very own ears or did my ears malfunction and transform his harsh voice into a soft one before getting to my brain?
I heard him clear his throat slightly as I looked back to the floor.
“Mantha, speak up” his voice came, this time impatient and quite harsh and I breathed out in relief.
Now, this was better, I think I preferred hearing this usual voice rather than hearing the strangely pleasant voice.
“Maybe he uses a gentle tone only when he wants to kill,” Cara said to me and I slightly shuddered.
“Well, his voice has returned to his normal tone so I would be guessing right now that we are safe,” I mumbled to myself.
“Miss. Melissa… I think she dislikes me just a little bit… After the stairs had been cleaned, she came to the maid’s quarters and met me and Cassie resting, she probably did not want us lazing around, so she asked us to clean the stairs again and just when we were almost done… She came… She came back and stained the stairs with smooth.” I explained to him with my eyes on the floor.
That way I could not see his reaction, I did not know if he was currently angry and annoyed but something in me kept telling me that I would not be able to determine even if I saw his face because this man before me usually had an expressionless face on.
“Melissa.” I heard his voice call, his voice was plain. I could not tell if he was angry right now or just mystified.
“Get up,” he ordered and I quickly scampered to my feet.
“Get me, Melissa,” he ordered.
“Yes, Alpha,” I replied and walked out of the room in quiet haste.
Immediately I closed the door behind me, I leaned against the door and breathed out in relief.
“Thank goodness I survived,” I mumbled to myself, starting to walk away.
My mind drifted to the weird softness of his voice and the words replayed in my head.
“Oh no!” I mumbled.
I knew that I was indeed lucky to have survived, people like Alpha Kayden definitely only smile and speak softly when they are about to be really ruthless.
“Hey, what did he say?” Cassie said, rushing over to my side as I alighted the stairs.
“You bad friend, how could you push me out? Don’t you know who stained the floor too? Uh?” I asked and she let out a huge grin.
“Well, you told him already, didn’t you? That’s the point!” She replied and I wanted to tell her about the sudden softness of his voice and ask if she had ever heard his voice is so soft but I decided against it. I should learn to keep some things private.
“He asked me to get him, Miss. Melissa.” I replied her.
“Great! Miss. Melissa, that slimy woman in trouble.” Cassie said and laughed in the way a villain would laugh.
Her laughter although funny reminded me of the way of one of my slave masters laughed so hard back then when they killed one of us.
Who knows? Perhaps he had also laughed like that over Granny. I really hope she is safe.
“Why are your eyes getting teary?” Cassie asked.
“Ugh? Teary? … It’s nothing.” I shook my head.
“Are you sure?” She asked and I nodded again, giving her a small smile that seemed to reassure her.
She grabbed my hand and pulled me along with her.
“Let’s go get darling Miss. Melissa.” Cassie said and we both walked off to another part of the building.
“There is the witch’s room,” Cassie whispered into my ears and I chuckled softly.
I moved towards the door and knocked softly on the door.
“Who is there?” Her voice came, it was soft this time around, perhaps because she had no idea who was at the door.
“It’s me, Samantha,” I replied.
“What are you doing here?” I heard her voice ask, this time her voice taking back its harsh form.
The door opened a few seconds later.
“Good day miss. Melissa.” I greeted with a bow while Cassie just bowed without a word.
“What are you doing here?” She asked again, impatiently.
“Alpha Kayden wants to see you, ma’am,” I replied and saw one of her legs move backwards in what seemed to be a stagger.
“You… Did you say anything to him?” She asked.
“I dare not Miss. Melissa.” I replied to her and I could feel the state of disgust and hate that covered me from her eyes.
I watched her hurriedly wear some slip ones that were so clean one could lick them and began to run towards the main mansion.
“What’s making her run?” I asked.
“The fear of Alpha Kayden is enough to make a crippled man run even faster than that, Miss. Melissa must have sensed that she was is some sure deep mess. C’mon, let’s follow her, you have to watch the show and let me know what goes on.” Cassie said pulling me along.
We got into the main mansion and right there in the living room was Alpha Kayden sitting majestically with his legs crossed over each other.
“Go over there.” Cassie urged
“I can’t stay there and listen to their conversation, he didn’t tell me to come back,” I whispered softly to Cassie as we both walked towards the direction of the kitchen.
“Mantha, come back.” I heard his voice and I froze.
Did… Did he just hear what I whispered? His small ears are that good?
“Wow! This man is a gem!” Cara said to me as I took heavy steps back to him.
“Alpha.” I bowed and he diverted his gaze to Melissa.

Kayden’s POV
“I would ask you some questions and I expect straight answers, okay?” I asked and Melissa nodded.
A sharp look thrown at her told her that that sort of response was not allowed.
“Yes sir.” she quickly corrected herself in place of the nod.
“You walked in with sooth?”
“I am sorry sir… That was my bad.” she apologized almost in a whimper.
“You bullied maids?”
“I did not….”
“The truth only.”
“I am sorry Alpha. I am…”
“I freaking did not demand your apology!! Reply to the damaged questions!’ I yelled at her and saw both she and Mantha flinch.
“Yes Alpha.” she shuddered in a cracking voice.
I gulped down nothing, breathed in and out and looked back at her.
“My answer?” I demanded.
“I bullied maids, sir,” she replied.
“By doing what?”
“Making them clean a particular spot thrice when it wasn’t dirty,” she replied, her voice now cracking badly like she was about to break down.
“Good,” I mumbled and got up from my seat.
“You are sacked.”
