On the birthday of Shengsheng, Yan Shaoxuan drove them to the fashion show in person. As soon as Xia Weiwei took Shengsheng out of the vehicle, a person rushed over, held Shengsheng up, and kissed her like crazy.
“Shengsheng, my munchkin! I miss you so much!”
Shengsheng also got muddled for a second before realizing what had happened. She soon put a sweet smile on her face and called Rose “godmother” before planting a big kiss on her cheek.
Xia Weiwei could not help touching her forehead, “Rose, behave yourself!” She was worried that such a high profile might catch the eye of reporters.
Rose replied in high spirits, “Sure. Let’s go.”
Xia Weiwei turned back and reminded in a gentle tone, “Shaoxuan, take care while driving.” Yan Shaoxuan intended to stay with them all the way but could not free himself from business affairs, so he replied, “Rest assured. I will pick you up once the show is over, and we’ll celebrate Shengsheng’s birthday together.”
Xia Weiwei nodded with a smile. “Sure.”
Rose urged, “The show is about to begin. Could you two lovebirds get ahold of yourselves and show your affection after that?” She had taken it for granted that Xia Weiwei and Yan Shaoxuan were a married couple, which Xia Weiwei neither admitted nor clarified for the sake of Shengsheng. But this time, she made a quip about it, “Go find a godfather for Shengsheng if you cannot stand the sight of this.”
Yan Shaoxuan’s hands on the steering wheel started to shiver out of control. He was overwhelmed by the immense joy and excitement because he had understood the subtext of what Xia Weiwei said. After that day when she promised him a reply, he made a guess with 50% certainty. After hearing these words, he was 90% confident about what she would say to him.
Having entered the studio, Rose led Shengsheng backstage to get prepared, while Xia Weiwei took an unimpressive seat in a corner.
The show started very soon. In this fashion show, models would display various items which would be auction off by a host afterwards. The show of children’s clothes Shengsheng would participate in was a halftime performance. Xia Weiwei adjusted the settings of that camera in her hand and took photos of auction items she enjoyed from time to time.
All of a sudden, she saw Xia Zhengyan, who was sitting near the front of the stage. Next to him was a woman dressed up as a lady from upper class, holding his arm and acting intimately.
This scene stunned Xia Weiwei, and she mocked herself. Four years felt like a century to her. What had happened four years ago was so painful that how her father would react to the news of her death had never crossed her mind. Anyway, it appeared they were living quite well.
What had passed was past. She would not be dragged into old memories since she had decided to get a fresh start.
Xia Weiwei left all those mixed feelings behind at the sight of Shengsheng. She stood on the stage like an angel fallen from heaven. Her sparkling eyes made her stood out among a bunch of children with western looks, which greatly amazed the audience. The flashlights flickered incessantly.
The whole performance only lasted several minutes, and following that was the auction. Xia Weiwei then stood up and headed backstage. Due to her lousy sense of direction, it took her a good while to find a lounge. Without thinking much, she was to enter the room but instantly halted her steps when overhearing familiar voices coming from inside.
“Zhengyan, why should we leave now? The auction has just begun.”
“Aren’t you here for the fashion show?”
“I… I like that jade bracelet, and I want you to bid for it.”
Xia Zhengyan felt a burst of disgust at the sight of this greedy woman in front of him. “Are you out of your mind? Do you know how much it costs? Haven’t you got enough jewelry over these years?”
Liang Hong argued boldly and righteously, “Hasn’t the great Xia’s Group got money? Isn’t our daughter, Xia Mo Mrs. Luo? How could a piece of jade be a problem for our son-in-law?”
