“You don’t have to back him up Gem.”
“It really wasn’t his fault you know. He sent some guards after me but I told them not to accompany me.” Layton turned to Valentine still with anger but he had no choice so he had to spare him.
“Do you know who did this?” Layton tried to lower his voice. The nurse came in holding papers and a file.
“Well she is very lucky to have survived the shot but sadly she lost her child.” The environment was filled with shock from both men. Layton felt a sharp pain in his heart. He glanced at Gemini with disappointment.
“You never told me you were pregnant.” Gemini looked at the ground.
“I didn’t want to get you more worried. You were so caught up in protecting me I thought if you knew I was pregnant you would have more to worry about. Am sorry.” Layton rubbed his forehead with his arm then sighed.
“Do you know who did this?!” Layton yelled.
“I don’t really know, I passed out before I could see who it was.” She regained her strength a little.
“She recovered quickly in a surprisingly short time.” The nurse added but it didn’t surprise him. He kissed Gemini’s forehead then made his way to the doctor’s office with Strider. Jr got in then took his seat opposite the doctor.
“You must be Mrs. Burn’s relative?” Layton nodded, he knew how important it was to keep his and Gemini’s relationship secret.
“Well, she is a very lucky person to survive.” The doctor handed Layton an x-ray photo of the damaged ribcage.
“The surgeons said they found a single silver bullet in between her ribs.” Layton trembled again and gazed at Strider who also turned to him. He knew how the bullets killed and were more surprised that Gemini survived the shot.
“She’ll have to remain in the hospital for some days or even weeks but she will be safe.” They left the room and stopped in the corridor.
“What a surprise for a wolf to survive such a weapon.” Strider scratched the back of his head. Layton took some time to think and it snapped.
“What makes it more strange was the fact that the person knew the exact weapon to use. Which means we may have a new enemy.”
“Or an old one. Maybe one of the back members.” Layton rose his hand.
“Not really. A wolf cannot handle silver and it’s known.” Strider knew he was right.
“A human perhaps? If true then we are in deep trouble.” Layton knew he had to investigate the issue. If it was a human then it will lead to their extinction.
“However I thought silver guns were out of order?” Strider asked as they made their way back to Gemini’s room.
“Looks like they aren’t.” Gemini looked better than before. The thought of Gemini’s quick recovery surprised Strider most, he knew it was almost impossible for one to heel from such a bullet.
“How are you doing though?” Layton asked Gemini.
“Much better than last time. It’s strange how the child died too.” Gemini knew how strong wolf children could be so it was surprising that the child died.
“It’s something even I am wondering but we will investigate the matter.” The same nurse came in again.
“Visiting hours are over. You will be allowed to visit tomorrow thank you.” The nurse waited for the men to leave.
“I’ll leave you to rest. Be safe.” Layton lastly hugged her before leaving the room.
Gemini was left alone in the room. Days passed by and multiple policemen visited her asking the same question.
“Don’t you remember anything? Something that could find your attacker.” Gemini would say the same thing over and over.
“I don’t remember anything at all. I couldn’t see clear anyway but I will try to remember.” The policeman sighed and left the room. Layton knew his wife was hiding something but he didn’t know what.
“This is getting us nowhere.” Layton’s veins popped up. There was a sudden knock on the door, Strider opened the door and Francis walked in.
“What do you want?!” Layton yelled.
“heard Gemini was attacked so I was sent to investigate the issue.” Layton rolled his eyes then flew his hands in the air.
“We don’t need your help, we already have policemen investigating the issue.
“Believe me I am your only hope. The rest won’t find the guy your after.” Francis pulled off his sunglasses.
“Confident are we.” Layton laughed.
“I am just being honest. Give me a week and I will find this person.” Layton admired his confidence and he saw no reason to deny it.
“A week it is.” Francis turned to Gemini.
“You look much healthy. I heard you looked terrible, guess we all have different healing methods. I’ll take my leave now after all this case won’t solve itself.”
Francis left. Days passed and Gemini took some time to think, she knew who the killer was but she never imagined people would be so hateful. She felt utterly weak that moment but later comforted herself remembering Layton’s words and she knew what needed to be done. She was replaced with complete anger and her eyebrows crossed.
She got up, plucking the giant needle from her wrist. She wrote a letter using the remaining paper and pen. She snuck through the hospital stuff and managed to get some casual clothes. She left the hospital.
