“It’s rare to see you so kind.”
“Are you only nice to good-looking people?”
“You never used to meddle in other people’s business before.”
…
The three of them, talking over each other, began to press Enzo for information. Enzo held his head with one hand, feeling dizzy and disoriented.
“When you sent that text saying you encountered a top-notch… um…” Tery started to say, but Enzo covered his mouth before he could finish the sentence.
“Alright, enough, let’s not talk about that for now. Let’s discuss what we should do next,” Enzo interrupted.
Upon hearing Enzo’s words, the three of them became serious.
Landon cleared his throat and said, “Actually, we tried negotiating with Barton, but the people we sent were all rejected. There’s also been no word from the Italian faction; we don’t know if they’ve been targeted by Barton.”
“And on Barton’s side, no one has seen who the real culprit is. There’s a cause for every effect. It doesn’t make sense for them to come after you,” Tessa analyzed seriously.
“If things don’t work out, we’ll fight them. Since we’ve already fallen out, it’s not like we can’t beat them,” Trey spat out angrily, his irritable nature unchanged since childhood.
Tessa gave him a scornful look. “Injuring the enemy at the cost of self-harm.”
Barton’s group, Shadowy Saints, and the Italian faction had always been in a delicate balance. If they were to fight Barton and suffer heavy losses, the Italians might take advantage. Ultimately, wouldn’t this lead to their own destruction?
Enzo crossed his arms, furrowing his brow. In truth, everyone was right; Barton’s actions this time were indeed somewhat bizarre.
“How about… we all have dinner first?” a crisp female voice called out.
The four of them turned to see a spread of steaks, sashimi, and fragrant curry laid out on the table. Sookie had taken advantage of their earlier lively discussion to prepare the meal.
“Okay, let’s have dinner first,” Enzo invited everyone to sit down.
“Oh, should I or shouldn’t I, your little maid’s cooking skills are not bad. This curry tastes just like my mom used to make when I was young,” Tery mumbled incomprehensibly as he ate.
Upon hearing the praise, Sookie blushed shyly. Enzo glanced at Sookie, a faint smile playing on his lips, looking rather pleased as well.
Landon’s gaze kept shifting between Enzo and Sookie. He wasn’t as carefree as Tery and wasn’t easily satisfied with Enzo’s casual explanations. Landon felt that this young maid was definitely not simple.
After the meal, everyone retired to their respective rooms.
Alone, Sookie tidied up the dishes and, once finished, sat on the sofa lost in thought.
At that moment, her temporary phone rang. She retrieved her bag from the sofa corner and checked her phone.
Great, over 30 missed calls.
Never in her life had she been so needed by someone.
Then she noticed five unread messages.
“Sookie, how are you? Have you thought it over?”
“Sookie, are you safe now? Can you take a call?”
“Sookie, if you cooperate with us, we can help you continue your graduate project.”
“Sookie, if you have time, we hope you can call back.”
“Sookie, we need to ensure your safety; we will send someone to investigate.”
Sookie’s eyes widened as she opened the last message.
Damn it!
Is the FBI staff stupid? If she doesn’t answer the call, it means she’s busy. Even if she’s discovered and the enemy has her phone, seeing that they’re sending someone over, isn’t that just leading them to their deaths?
Damn, damn, damn, what should she do?
If Enzo is really arrested, she’ll be in big trouble. At the very least… she can’t be implicated because of him.
In an instant, Sookie’s heart raced. After all, Enzo was a member of the Shadowy Saints. Though she didn’t know much about the underworld, she had heard Kalvin’s friends talk about it. This organization was known for its ruthlessness, always managing to escape unscathed from their crimes. What’s more, they had a leader who left no traces behind after their actions.
Sookie couldn’t bear to think about what would happen if he found out she had secretly contacted the agents and had a trackable phone on her.
Sookie was lost in her own world, completely unaware of someone behind her.
“What are you doing?”
“God! Damn it!” Sookie was startled by the sudden voice. She hastily turned around to find Tery drinking water.
“You’re so nervous, do you have another man behind Enzo’sback?”
“No! Wait, he’s not my man, we have no relationship,” Sookie retorted quickly, although nervous, her mouth faster than her brain.
Tery smirked, sitting down beside Sookie. “You haven’t slept together? No kisses? Or maybe had a bubble bath together?”
Sookie’s expression was one of “Are you crazy?” “Of course not, he’s my benefactor, and I’m repaying him with my actions, it’s that simple.”
“Oh, your actions, like using your phone to tip off the police?”
Oh my god! How does he know?!
Sookie’s expression changed from resignation to fear, while Tery remained relaxed. “Don’t worry, they can’t find this place. I’ve already blocked your phone signal before coming here.”
“But… why am I still receiving messages?” Sookie stammered.
“Did you notice the date? It’s from two days ago,” Tery pointed out.
“So, how should I deal with you, dear Miss Willis?” Tery suddenly leaned in close to her face.
Sookie’s eyes immediately welled up with tears, and in a quavering voice she said, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. I didn’t reveal anything about you, they approached me…”
As she spoke, Sookie began to cry, and seeing her tears, Tery became awkward.
Oh god, he’s never comforted a woman before! All the women he’d met before were trying to make him happy with their smiles.
“Oh, please don’t cry, I know you didn’t say anything, otherwise I wouldn’t have just seen the message today, right?” Tery awkwardly tried to comfort Sookie, realizing she was crying harder.
As for why he hadn’t told everyone about this earlier, it was because he had been in contact with Enzo all along. However, since Enzo seemed fine and didn’t hint at anything unusual, he had come to see what was going on.
“Okay, stop crying, or I’ll tell them right now that you’re an undercover agent, and then it won’t be my problem when they throw you out and bury you,” Tery snapped, annoyed that no one had told him how difficult it was to console a woman.
As soon as she heard this, Sookie immediately stopped crying, but because she had cried so hard just now, her breathing was still uneven.
Seeing her stop, Tery finally breathed a sigh of relief.
“I’m not an undercover agent, but I don’t want to be involved in the affairs of the underworld either. Whenever you settle your business, I want to go home,” Sookie said to Tery.
Tery looked at this young and innocent girl and didn’t know what to say for a moment.
Just as he was silent for a few seconds, Landon suddenly rushed down.
“There’s a rat!”
