Chapter 24 She is My Maid

Sookie couldn’t sleep. She was pondering whether to follow Agent Hayde’s words and report Enzo’s whereabouts to him. She was also contemplating the relationship between Mia and him.
Enzo was a special figure to her. He had saved her life, yet he was also a heinous criminal in the eyes of the authorities. Lost in her thoughts, Sookie eventually drifted off to sleep without realizing it.
The next day, Sookie woke up to find Enzo gone. But there was a prepared breakfast on the table, which she reheated in the microwave. As she watched the plate spin, she recalled the chiffon cakes her mother used to make at home. She used to assist her mother in the kitchen, enjoying the moments chatting while her mother made sweets.
Lost in her longing, she seemed to have a hallucination, actually smelling the sweet aroma of the cake.
As the microwave went “ding,” the front door of the living room also opened. Enzo took off his jacket and handed Sookie a bag.
Sookie’s expression turned surprised. “Wow, where did you get this from?”
“In town, the only nearby town, to gather some information,” said Enzo, taking out casually packaged pastries and eating one. “Hmm, this shop still has the same taste. Try it.”
Sookie took a bite and indeed found it delicious. She hesitated for a moment before asking him, “So, how’s the situation? Your brothers, are they okay?” In truth, she already knew yesterday.
Enzo fell silent for a moment, swallowing the last bite of cake. “Yesterday, almost all the men sent by Landon were killed. The opposing side had ample manpower and equipment; we didn’t expect their firepower to be so fierce.”
Sookie’s heart skipped a beat as she anxiously said, “Who died? In comparison between the Shadowy Saints and that gang, whose odds are better?”
Enzo looked deeply at Sookie. “The person who died was Barton Brown’s nephew, also a scoundrel. But it’s said that their family only has this one heir left, and their pursuit of us is not only because of this.”
Shadowy Saints and the Italian gang had a friendship. Barton feared that both groups would join forces to take him down, so he decided to strike first, aiming to dismantle the Shadowy Saints first, especially since that bar also fell within half of their jurisdiction.
“As for the odds, it’s fifty-fifty,” said Enzo as he casually opened a bottle of whiskey and took a sip. After all, the Shadowy Saints hadn’t engaged in such large-scale combat for a long time; most of their organization was currently engaged in legitimate business. But this incident told him that the Shadowy Saints still couldn’t “wash their hands of it.” He had urgently contacted Tessa and Landon, and they should be arriving here in a few days.
Seeing the seriousness in Enzo’s expression, Sookie understood the thorny nature of the situation.
But what could they do now? They could only hide in this desolate valley, biding their time until they found a way to resolve the situation.
Over the next two days, Sookie lived very happily and relaxed. Every morning, Enzo had prepared breakfast for her. When bored, she would read the books she had brought in her backpack, or go hunting with Enzo. Yes, in this remote place, they occasionally managed to catch a few wild chickens and rabbits. In the evenings, they would set up a grill in the yard and barbecue the chicken and rabbit, drinking beer.
If she didn’t know him and her so well, she would have almost thought they were a vacationing couple.
Just when Sookie thought this period would continue to be peaceful, Landon and Tessa, along with the infamous master of the underworld, Tery, finally arrived.
Returning home with the rabbits shot with shotguns and the fish caught by Sookie, they found three people sitting in the living room.
“Wow, buddy, long time no see!” Tery jumped up excitedly and hugged Enzo. With curly hair, he looked young and delicate, and with a voice that didn’t quite match his appearance, Sookie almost thought he was a tomboy.
“Hey man, long time no see. How’s it going in Chicago?”
“Not bad, I opened a club there, business is good. Once we settle Barton, we can all go there for a good time,” said Tery, the one among them who had the largest legitimate business. Thanks to his good eloquence and harmless appearance, he had made acquaintances with many celebrities and politicians, which was very advantageous for the Shadowy Saints.
“Great, and how about you two? Are you doing okay?” Enzo smiled, looking at Landon and Tessa sitting together. The two of them always exuded a sweet, lovey-dovey feeling.
“We just finished our honeymoon. We justcame back from Mauritius,” said Tessa, slightly disdainful as she gave Enzo a look.
Enzo knew she was joking and immediately spread his hands, pouting in a weird, playful manner. “Yeah, yeah, save me, please.”
“Hahaha.”
“Hahaha.”
Everyone was amused by Enzo’s strange demeanor, and the atmosphere was warm, like a big family.
“Hey, who’s this?”
Tery noticed Sookie, who had been silent the whole time, and curiously asked.
“Wow, a surprise?” Landon whistled.
This was bad.
Enzo looked complicated, clearly unsure how to explain Sookie’s presence.
As Sookie looked at these unfamiliar faces, still processing their information, Enzo’s next move left her dumbfounded.
“That’s right, let me introduce you. This is my little maid. I was too busy in the southern city, so I hired a maid,” Enzo said, touching his nose, a sign of his guilt.
“A maid? Are you sure? Since when do maids wear their employer’s sweatshirt?” Tessa bluntly exposed him.
But Sookie in the oversized sweatshirt looked too ridiculous. Just as the atmosphere grew awkward, Sookie finally couldn’t help but speak up.
“Hello, everyone. I’m Sookie, Enzo’s friend. I got into trouble with the police over some small matter, and he helped me. As a way to repay him, I agreed to work as his maid for two weeks.”
“Wait, what did you say? You got into trouble with the police? Enzo, you know we’re on edge right now. Keeping this woman around is a big problem,” Tery, with his rebellious personality, said what he thought directly.
For a moment, the atmosphere went from quiet to tense.
Tery was indeed right. The FBI had been watching them for years. They had just caused a major riot. If the police were really after Sookie, having her with them was like having a ticking time bomb.
Enzo pinched his brow and explained, “She just had a fight with her ex-boyfriend. It’s nothing serious. As for why I brought her here, it was an accident. You know, the situation was too urgent the past few days, and I couldn’t just leave her there to be beaten to death by the Polish. You guys understand, right?”
“Let me introduce you. This is Landon, my own brother; this is Tessa, the underworld princess of our Shadowy Saints. Her father is the founder. And this one who looks like a girl is Tery, who grew up with us since childhood.”
As Enzo explained and introduced them to Sookie, the faces of the other three grew increasingly strange, the more Enzo spoke, the more awkward they seemed, except for Sookie.
