Miranda was still waiting in the bedroom, eager to hear about how Damian’s visit to Katrina went, she was lost in her thoughts and didn’t even realize when he walked in.
“Miranda.”
“Oh um,” she got up from the couch to meet him upon hearing her name. “So…? How did it go? How is she?”
“She’s putting up, but thankfully she’ll survive.”
“Oh, that’s really good then.”
“But…”
“But what?”
“She seemed different.”
“Different? As how?”
“She suddenly seemed to have realized her mistake; getting angry about the wedding and leaving just like that. She even apologized to me for doing so.”
“And? Isn’t it a good thing that she’s willing to accept?”
“I don’t know about this… The Katrina I know isn’t always willing to forget things so easily.”
“Damian…. I think you’re just over thinking things. If she’s willing to put it all behind her, then I think she should be encouraged. Besides, this is a hard time for her, she needs your support now more than ever.”
He nodded, “I know, and I’m willing to help her, I just didn’t expect her to be so calm and quaint about things. It’s so unlike her.”
“How are you sure she’s not being as honest as she seems? I think you should give her a chance Damian, if she’s feeling repentant about her actions, I’m sure she means it.”
Sighs, “very well. I sure would love to see Katrina moving on happily after all she’s been through. Maybe I AM over thinking it.”
“Yes, I would love to see Katrina happy too.”
“There is one other thing she did request for that I felt reluctant about.”
“What is it?”
“She said she wanted to see you in private… I didn’t know what for, and I didn’t think to ask because I wasn’t sure I was going to allow it.”
“Oh Damian. Don’t be too hard. I’m sure she means no harm.”
“I’m not saying she meant harm but…. Why she didn’t want me or anyone else there is what I didn’t seem to understand.”
“Maybe she just wanted to tell me something she didn’t want you to know, or maybe it’s something that only a woman can relate to. You know that these are very difficult times for Katrina.”
He nodded, “yes I understand.”
“So, let me go and see her now.”
“Are you sure you want to do this Miranda? You don’t have to you know..”
“I want to. Katrina needs all the support she can get now, and I am willing to offer it if she wants.”
“Thank you. You’re such a good person.”
**********
Katrina was taking her afternoon medicine when someone gently knocked on her door.
“Who is it?”
“Hi, it’s Miranda,” came the voice from outside.” Damian said you wanted to see me.”
So, she agreed to come. So surprising, Katrina hadn’t expected her to, considering how nasty she’s been to her since she came here. Such a gullible bitch.
“Oh Miranda, please, come in,” she answered in a friendly tone, placing the glass bottle on her bedside table after emptying it’s content.
“Hello Katrina,” Miranda slowly walked to her bed.
“Hello.”
This was a weird situation for them both, as the two had never really gotten along, Katrina had her head down, with an expression Miranda couldn’t make out. Her attention seemed to be placed more on the blanket covering her legs than the woman standing in front of her.
After the silence, Miranda tried again to start a conversation.
“Katrina, I’m so sorry for all that’s happened. I really didn’t mean to…”
“No Miranda. It’s okay. You were the one who was fortunate enough to win Damiams heart, something I couldn’t do.”
“No, no….. I’ve seen the State Damian was when you left. He really cares about you.”
“Really?”
“Yes, he was truly bothered, so much that he swore he wouldn’t forgive himself if anything happened to you because of this.”
“He did?”
“Yes, he did. Damian’s life would’ve never been the same if you left him so unexpectedly, he made that so obvious when you disappeared.”
“Wow!” Katrina knew that Damian would get upset if she left, she is well aware that he cares about her to some extent, what she didn’t know was how important she was to him, how much it would affect him if she ever disappeared from his life. It’s the best he can do for her, but it’s not enough! No matter how much he might express his concern for her, it can never be enough!
Miranda continued, clueless of whatever was going on in Katrina’s mind.
“I was truly surprised when you told Damian you wanted to see me. Believe me Katrina, there’s nothing more than for us to get along….”
Katrina’s face held one that took Miranda’s words to heart, but in her mind, it was all… humph! As if!
“I also want us to get along Miranda. I’ll admit that the only reason I hated you so much was because I was jealous of you. I hated you because Damian favored you more in a a few days of meeting you, than he ever did me despite the number of years I’ve been with him. It was truly saddening, you know.”
“I understand perfectly…”
What could this bitch possibly understand about losing a lover?
“I would even react worse if I were in your shoes, but even I couldn’t stop what it was that happened between Damian and I.”
“What do you mean you couldn’t stop it?” Her tone was gentle and inquisitive, but her head raging at Miranda’s words.
“Marrying him was a choice I had to take, for my pack, for my people, but then it blossomed to something so extraordinary, something I couldn’t control, no matter how hard I tried.”
Katrina already knew where this was going, “are you saying…. You fell in love with him?”
Nodding slowly, “yes, I’m sorry for telling you this…. It just came out…. ”
“no, no… It’s okay. I’ve already told Damian that I’m fine with anything that happens between the both of you now… ”
“Are you sure…? I don’t want you go through any trouble because of me.”
Katrina nodded, “perfectly sure, go on dear… Make him happy.”
Upon leaving Katrina’s room, Miranda’s heart felt so gladdened and free. It all felt so surreal. She never thought she’d see a day her husband’s former mistress would no longer despise her, but now she’s seen it all for herself, she couldn’t be more thankful for Katrina’s maturity, and the way she chose to handle things.
But meanwhile…
Katrina has other plans, and deceiving everyone into believing that she means well for Damian and Miranda’s union is just one of the many tricks this she-wolf has up her sleeve.
