She reached for Kenley’s chin, tilting his head over as my blood seeped into his mouth. His lips twitched against my skin, adam’s apple bobbing slowly as he swallowed.
He…drank it… He swallowed it…himself.
Those invisible walls that kept me sealed completely disappeared the second he gulped, and as soon as I realized that my body had reverted back to me, I ripped my hand from his lips. Trembling, I held it against my chest, wide-eyes watching Kenley’s chest rise and fall. I paled.
I-Its done…it’s been fucking done…!
“Her eyes…they’re back…” Mom’s voice sounded just as I heard her feet make a sudden dash towards me. She dropped to the floor beside me, a sob leaving her lips as she pulled me into her embrace, hugging me close.
“Y-Your blood…w-why did yo—”
“Sorry.” With a face of complete gloom, I dropped my eyes from Kenley’s form, far too ashamed to look at another of my handiworks.
I can hear it clearly now…his heartbeats. There’s no doubt that he drank it… right before my eyes.
Fuck.
“Why are you apologizing?” Dad stepped closer, holding my gun out for me to take. When I didn’t reach for it, he settled it in my lap with a sigh, then his fingers slipped into my hair, patting my head softly, “You saved him, didn’t you? That’s a good thing, isn’t it?”
A good thing? How can this…ever be a ‘good’ thing?
“Yes, your father is right!” Mother tightened her embrace, “Its okay… You did the right thing, sweety…”
Right??? Changing a born human into a wolf can never be ‘right’ nor ‘good’. If he asked me to, that would’ve been a different story. But…I…I allowed a stupid wolf to exploit me. How useless can one person be?
What will Lucas think of me? Even Kasan…will he be mad? Will he hate me? Now that it concerns his brother, will his view change? And Kenley…he never liked me from the beginning. He’ll hate me more than he already does, won’t he? He’ll blame me…just like Lucas did. He’ll say I… ruined his life. He’ll s—-
“Human, shut up. He’s out, but breathing is stabilizing. He will not die…still, needs treatment. You panic for no reason.”
‘You have the nerve to say ‘for no reason’? I clearly told you not to! First Lucas and then this guy, who’ll be next? How the fuck do I get you out of me?!’
“No. Lucas…is family… Natural…like us.”
‘Natural? What does that have to do with anything?’
“‘Turned’ ones have no inner-wolf. But I… feel his wolf. Blood did not change him…he’s… natural born.”
My heart stopped, blood running cold. I sat there on the floor with my mind in total confusion and my body paralyzed in spot from the shock. The strange words she said, I would have never expected to hear them. He’s natural born, she said. My blood did not change him, she said.
What exactly is she trying to say? She can’t seriously mean what I’m thinking…!
“What’s wrong? Clara?” Mother eased my head off her shoulder and pushed my hair behind my ear, worriedly searching my face. I turned away, smacking her hands off me and scooting out of her reach.
She’s distracting me.
‘So…what you’re saying is… he was already a wolf? But I gave him blood! I definitely gave him…and then he shifted! He de—‘
“Blood sped up… shifting process. He shift early…that’s all. We did not…turn him. But this one…this ‘Kenley’ is our doing. We saved him. If he is ungrateful… I kill him myself. Don’t be pathetic, human.”
Is she messing with me?!
‘How…can I believe you? How do I know you’re not lying? It was not up until today that I started hearing you in my head. How the hell do you even know all this?’
“I…feel his wolf. Why would I…lie? I told you w—”
The rest of her words were drowned out by a sudden thud from behind the door.
What the hell was that?
“Something’s coming!” Father pulled mother to her feet and shoved her gun to her chest before turning to me, whispering for me to get ready.
I grabbed my gun and pushed myself up, eyes darting to the door as I situated my body in front of Kenley. I took my stance, and perked my ears, listening for any signs of force entry. I feel a little dizzy, but I think I’ll be able to shoot if need be.
“Luna?”
That voice…! Is it Chase?
“Wait!” I lowered my gun, and rushed forward, “Drop the guns, I think it’s Chase…”
“Chase?”
I quickly gripped the creaking door, and pulled it open. Just as I thought, Chase’s battered form met my eyes, his hands draped over his brother’s shoulders as they took shaky steps towards the shed. Jace carried a small strap bag in one hand, and the other hand gripped Chase’s waist, keeping him upright.
My gaze moved pass them, and ran over the premises, examining the unmoving wolves sprawled over the ground. They’ve killed a lot, which probably means they’re doing fine against all those wolves. It’s getting dark out and they’re both not in sight, but I can hear howls coming from the woods, it seems they’ve taken the battle there.
Since he’s gone, I wonder…if I can…get out now…
Gulping, I opened the door wider and hesitantly lifted my foot, but almost immediately, it halted midair. I clenched my jaw in annoyance, hands reaching down to grip my ankle tightly.
I gave it a few hard pushes but despite my desperate efforts to settle over the threshold, my foot would not move no matter how hard I tried. In the end, I had no choice but to move back inside.
Kasan really did some weird shit to me, I can’t even set a fucking foot outside! What do they call it?… An Alpha’s command?
That fucking idiot!
Scowling, I returned my eyes to the twins and ushered them inside. “You’re hurt?” I moved to the side, holding the barely-standing door for them to enter.
“We’ll be fine. We just got here. Before that, where’s Kenley?”
“K-Kenley?” I froze.
Fuck. What should I say?
“He’s back there.” Dad answered in my stead, frowning as he pointed behind us. “He was really pale when we arrived and bleeding out…my daughter gave him blood.”
“I understand.”
I blinked. He understands? Did he not hear what father said?
I watched in complete confusion as Jace lowered Chase to the floor and moved over to Kenley, lifting his shirt to examine the wound.
“What father means…” I piped up, “Is that…I let him drink my blood. He’s probably not human anymore…”
“Yes, I understand. His wound is nastier than I expected. I trust your judgement.”
H-He…trusts my judgement? Just like that? He speaks as if this is not a big deal, when it actually is! Isn’t it? I turned him! Of course, this is worth a few curse words or even a slap! But… he’s telling me that he understands and trusts my judgement?! Bullshit! Have I been stressing over th—!
“MATE!” The wolf’s voice returned, this time loud and overwhelmed with panic. A familiar throbbing blasted through my head and I had to wince at how hard it hit me.
‘Stop that! What the fuck?!’
“Mate is in danger. I feel it.”
I flinched.
‘Danger?! Kasan?’
“Yes. He’s fighting for too long. The moon is the reason… they’re still standing, but he can’t hold out much longer. He’ll die.”
That can’t be… he wanted to take care of this on his own, which means he fucking will! And Lucas… he promised me…!
Kasan will kill them, he’ll kill them all. They won’t die, not by that pathetic mutt’s hands.
“They will if we stay… like pathetic fools!”
“I SAID THEY FUCKING WON’T!” Words sprang from my lips before I could hold them back and instantly, all eyes landed on my figure.
Fuck, I spoke out loud.
“Sorry.” I ran a hand through my hair and slammed the door shut, biting down on my lip.
If he’s really in danger, it’s his fault. He should’ve brought us with him, he should’ve let me go at least! But no, he wanted to fight alone with just ONE single wolf backing him up. Yeah, danger is what he asked for, so it’s his duty to get himself out of it.
But…it sucks. It sucks that I don’t actually believe that. And it sucks that I’m stuck in this room unable to lift a finger…
Clicking my tongue, I trudged further across the room, drawing my gun against the floor behind me. Then, I sunk beside Kenley, leaning against the wall and looking up at Jace who was ruffling through his bag.
“Jace…”
He glanced at me, “Hmm, Luna?”
“Do you think he can win? Kasan?”
He went silent and I almost thought he wouldn’t answer until a sigh left his lips, “The Alpha always wins.” He started, “However, this one is honestly a little difficult. The whole pack can feel his emotions running wild and plus, it’s him and Lucas against all those wolves. If the others haven’t been ambushed like we were and manage to get here, then that will up their chances, but the way things are now…I think…it’s inevitable that we lose.”
Inevitable? So, even you…think they’ll die too.
“Do you understand now?” The wolf’s tone was almost taunting. “I’m telling you he’s in danger. They’re going to die.”
I pulled my legs up to my chest, wrapping my arms around them and dropping my head between my knees. Mom and Dad had also curled themselves in the corner, hugging their guns to their chest as they laid on the cold floor.
Even them…they need a doctor too.
‘Since you know so much, what am I supposed to do? I can’t even step a single foot ou—!’
“You can. As long as human gives me control, I… do everything… to save them. Things like an Alpha’s command won’t stop me.”
Control? Like before? She wants me to let her have her way with my body? That feeling of not being able to move my own limbs…I don’t want to feel that again if I don’t have to. As a matter of fact, I want to get rid of her completely right this instant!
But… still… I also want to get the hell out of here just as much. I want to help, and with me unable to resist Kasan’s command, I won’t be able to do a thing.
That time at the dungeon, it appears she killed all those men. It’s obvious that she’s quite the killer. I haven’t thought of it until now, but… if she should run off into those woods with full control of my body…would they still not stand a chance? If I were to let her do as she wishes…would we finally be able to make those wolves turn tale and run?
Would we?
“Your bullets do little to nothing… I’m stronger. We win if I go out there. Think of Lucas, he’s struggling even more than mate. The weaker will die first. Human, just give me control. I kill them all…like the pests they are.”
‘Why can’t you just take my body like you did before? How can I trust you?’
“No. It takes energy to force control, I can’t do it whenever I want. I want you to sleep willingly, I’m stronger when you sleep. Time is wasting. Decide.”
‘Then…’ I loosened my arms around my legs, letting them lie flat to the floor. ‘How-How do I give you control?’
I’m uneasy. And I don’t trust her, but…I’ll do it. I’ll do it if it means not sitting here like a fool…!
This is always how it is. Even when mother and father went on the most dangerous of missions, they’d always leave me behind as if I was a fragile glass that’d break. I don’t want to do that anymore. I really don’t want to.
“You’ll feel it…the urge to sleep. Don’t fight it and let darkness take over.”
The urge to sleep? I feel nothing…at all though? Has she even started anything? Or am I suppose to sit here until I fall asleep?
I sat there silently with my anxiety touching the sky and my distrust growing by the second, until a sharp pang surged through my being from the tips of my toes to my forehead as a wolf’s howl echoed in my ears, the intensity making my head spin in an instant. I gripped my ears, blinking rapidly when my eyesight suddenly dimmed.
That howl…wasn’t from outside this shed, but from her…my wolf. How can she do that?!
No matter, the lightheadedness…I’m starting to feel it. And my limbs, they’re starting to numb…just like before. So, this is what she means…
‘Don’t fight it…let darkness take over’.
Those were her words.
…And I did just that…
Black dots soon appeared in my vision and my body simultaneously lost it strength, slipping down the wall and falling to the floor with a thud. The feeling of walls closing in on me started to rise again, but I didn’t try to get up, I didn’t try to get ahold of myself. I just…let it happen.
‘Don’t…lay a hand on my family and absolutely don’t…make me regret this…’
Following my last words to her…the world around me finally went completely dark as she took full control…
