Kasan’s POV: (Next chapter will be Clara’s)
“You didn’t come here to simply inquire about such things, did you? If it is that you’ve been exposed then I hope you know that I don’t take refugees. I suggest you leave while you’re still breathing. I’m not in the best of moods.”
“T-That’s not it. I j-just… It seems like s-something happened, father has even requested that you meet him someplace other than the usual rendezvous spot. He’s either been exposed or t-they—” she gulped, face going pale. “–or they could’ve a-already killed him. S-Since he’s the only one who has any chance of figuring out who this ‘nightwalker’ is, I was h-hoping you’d send a few of yo–”
“No.” I cut her off before she could venture further and with a sigh, I stood from my seat and folded my arms, the baton swaying by my side. Her wide eyes drifted down towards it and I saw her shift closer to the edge of the couch.
There’s no point in continuing this. I have no time for such trifling conversations.
Stepping off, I shifted my eyes to Nate who was leaning against the wall and gestured for him to deal with her. “Take the letter then escort her out of here. Block all communications unless she’s needed.”
“Yes, Alpha. I’ll have someone keep a close eye on her incase she tries to do anything stupid.”
“No, wait! Please! You have to save Father! BOSS!!!”
I ignored her pleas and continued to head straight for my room, dropping the baton somewhere on the floor. I need to check on Clara for a bit. Afterwards…. it’s straight back to business.
While stalking through the house, I passed by the living room where the boys were seated but nobody dared to ask me anything of sorts. They knew better.
I glanced back at them as I was about to climb the stairs, noticing that Kenley was nowhere to be seen.
I told him to head out with Nate to dig up anything about that mutt in the basement, but Nate is the only one who’s actually came back.
“Where the fuck is my brother?”
The room remained silent, all eyes shifting to the floor. What the fuck?
“I asked where Kenl–”
A soft clank from the basement grabbed my attention. Scowling, I stepped back to take a single deep breath and indeed, Kenley’s scent was coming from inside this house…. particularly the basement.
Curling my fingers into a fist, I spun on my feet and stalked in his direction, anger running through my veins like blood.
If he dared to fuck with Lucas, so help me God I will fucking–
“I didn’t release him… if that’s what you’re thinking. I didn’t even go in.”
I spotted Kenley leaning against the door with a cigar stuffed between his lips. He took exactly two final puffs out of it, before letting it fall to the floor.
“Did you seriously think I’d go against you?… I just want to talk.” He eased off the door and walked over to me, stopping when he was standing three feet ahead of me. “So what are you planning on doing now? Torturing him til his memories return?”
I shrugged. “Pretty much. You didn’t expect me to let him be, did you? I’m not exactly lenient…. especially where it concerns my mate.”
“You can’t be serious!” His eyes suddenly widened and his veins seemed to pop out on his head.
“What if I am?” I gave him a look of complete disinterest. “Speaking of which, I have something I need you to do. You a-”
“Lucas has no memories of her or any of us for that matter! The doctor confirmed that he may never return to normal. You’re just adding fuel to the fire! And all this for a woman?! You’re the one who told me that you hated the idea of mates, so what is this? Why torture Lucas who has been with you for years just because of a newcomer?!”
I scowled. His tone didn’t quite sit right with me.
“Whether I break his bones or burn him to ash…” I stepped closer to him and jutted my index finger against his shoulder, forcing him a step backward. He tensed. “… has nothing to do with you. I give the orders and you execute them… no questions asked. Since when did you start thinking you had a say? I. am. your. Alpha.”
The moment I spat out the last few words, he immediately flinched and his fiery look reluctantly became nonchalant.
“Then what do you need me to do?” He breathed, dropping his gaze to the floor. His lips still opened and closed like a fish even after he finished speaking. That could only mean he had something he wanted to say, but knew better than to spit it out.
Good call.
“Find out from Robby and Jessie everything they know about Lucas and Clara’s relationship. When I say everything, I mean it. I want every single detail…. including why their son is a werewolf while both of them and his sister are humans.”
“Did you already know that they were Lucas’s paren–… Wait…” He rose his eyes to meet mine once more, disbelief shining in his gaze. “Did Nate confirm that he did something to her?”
“He never mentioned anything about his origins. And yes, I suppose I got the info I needed. He’s definitely worth killing.”
I could almost feel myself fill with adrenaline at the words that left my own mouth. Killing him will be satisfying atleast. I never really fancied him from the start. I simply took him in because I needed a few more claws rather than guns. The others, however, seemed to have grown a bit fond of him.
“I’d like to see that for myself.”
“Suit yourself. Before that though… there’s something more I want you to deal with. The spy apparently requested to meet. Go there. If he confirms that they are unto him, kill him and burn the place to bits. Make sure you milk everything out of him first. And if he leaves any messages, have his daughter decode it. You can take the twins with you.”
“Wouldn’t it be better if you went yourself?” His eyebrows drew together in genuine confusion. “He trusts only you. I thought you were already aware of that.”
“I have urgent matters to deal with at the moment.” I turned on my heel and waved him off. “Tell him that you’re my brother, he’ll see the slight resemblance.”
“I’ll do as you say then. Although…” he hesitated, letting it known that I wouldn’t appreciate the shit he was about to say. I stopped in my tracks and sent him an annoyed glare.
“With all due respect, I still can’t comprehend why you trust her so much. You didn’t exactly meet in the best of ways. We thought for sure that Robby sent her to get close to you on purpose, but then you forgot all about that theory within a matter of days. You can’t be too sure that she’s on your side. I mean, she approached you first right? And then she so happens to be Robby’s daughter; the woman known as one of the best shooters around. I’m not saying that the thing with Lucas is a sham, but you should still be cautious even if she’s your mate. You of all persons know the consequences of trusting others too much.”
‘The consequences of trusting others’…. I know that very well, but he’s unfortunately passing his place by bringing up things that are completely and utterly irrelevant.
If he wasn’t my brother, I’d have rid him of his tongue.
“Then…” I clenched my jaw, my lips pulling up into a visible sneer. “–should I trust you, brother? You are my father’s son afterall. You had no solid reason to follow me around everywhere as if I’m your god. You even insisted on joining this pack despite being a human. With that said, should I consider the possibility that you’re also spying on me for your father? I mean, you were born human and I was born a werewolf, father would take you back in a heartbeat if you so desired.”
“W-What?!” His eyes grew remarkably wide in an instant and his face made it seem as if he was shitting bricks. “I can promise you that father and I have no dealings. I haven’t seen him since I left, I swear! I’ve followed in your footsteps because you’re more family to me than he ever was, that’s all there is to it! You fucking know that I’d never betray you! I swore on my life to…!” He continued to ramble on, but I barely wasted my time listening to him.
If I wasn’t in a bad mood, I would’ve cackled at how desperate he was to prove himself. It actually makes me wonder. Would he really? Would he?
I doubt it.
Kenley is the last person I’d expect that from. He’s been with me since day one… so he knows exactly what happens to those who’ve switched sides. If he actually has a brain inside that head of his, he wouldn’t risk it.
“… I thought you’d say as much.” I scowled. “I’ve told you this already but I’ll tell you again, not everyone is an enemy. Clara could have killed me in a heartbeat if she wanted to. There were thousands of opportunities to do so, I even gave her my favourite gun. She isn’t our enemy, Ken… trust me on that. So if that’s the reason you’re giving her the cold shoulder, I suggest you stop. Even if she’s a human, she is still your Luna and I’d like if you both got along. You two are all I have afterall.”
This time, he nodded without any form of objections, his thin lips pursing. “I’ll take your word for it then.” With that, he silently walked by me and deliberately bumped my shoulder with his as he passed, his features clouded over with an emotion that I couldn’t quite fathom. Maybe anger? Disappointment? Vexation?
It seems I may have went a little overboard, but Kenley knows when to let things pass.
Right now, I should check on Clara for a bit… then I’ll find whoever that nuisance is… the one they call ‘nightwalker’.
I’ll rip him limb from limb before he even sets foot on my turf!
