“Stop pacing. You’re disturbing me.” Sarah complained weakly as she gloomily twisted the spoon through her chocolate ice cream, her downcasted eyes watching Jason’s feet pace along the floor back and forth.
He shifted his eyes to her and snatched the ice cream bowl from her hands with a scornful look on his face. “You’re the one who’s disturbing me. Why the hell are you playing with something as delicious as ice cream.”
“It doesn’t taste that good.” She said simply, reclining in her seat lazily. She didn’t feel like watching him pace every second and she didn’t feel like listening to him talk either. Ice-cream was the least of her problems.
He took a spoonful of ice cream from the bowl and stuffed it into his mouth, a large smile forming on his face as he savoured in the taste. “It doesn’t taste good.” He mocked with his mouth still filled. “Then why didn’t you take your precious Nutella instead?” After the few times Jason had visited the house, he was pretty sure that she was practically obsessed with Nutella so it was indeed quite the shock when she came back from the kitchen with ice cream instead.
“I don’t want it. And it’s not mine anyway. Damon bought it, so he should eat it.” Sarah glared at the floor in place of Damon when she spoke those bitter words. The thought of him made her somewhat angry, but she wasn’t completely sure if her anger was justified. She kept on reminding herself that Damon would always be Damon…. Sometimes ruthless and sometimes kind. Sometimes talkative and sometimes silent. Sometimes grumpy and sometimes laid-back.
With that being said, perhaps when he left her alone back there, he didn’t actually think much of it. He probably didn’t even stop to think that she might not have wanted him to run after some girl and that she might not have wanted him to leave her stranded. It wasn’t logical to get angry at a clueless person and besides, she should be happy for the few times when he actually acts like a good mate.
But despite trying not to make him seem like the bad guy, she still couldn’t stop herself from mustering up a glare at the mere mention of those stupid Nutella he bought her.
“I guess that you’re angry then, right?” Jason looked down at her warily, setting the ice cream aside as he found himself losing his appetite. “But look on the bright side, he didn’t just leave you there. Though I was kinda late, there’s still the fact that he sent me to get you.” He defended.
He was right. He did send Jason to get her…. But considering how everything happened, she couldn’t say whether she was happy with that or not. A little after Damon tried to look all dominant and mighty, Jason had come running in. It was still a mystery how he managed to arrive at that exact moment and how he knew that the situation desperately called for his intervention, but because of that, she didn’t get to see the rest of it all play out since Damon immediately requested that he took her home.
She wanted to stay, but she couldn’t. She wanted to see what would happen next, but she couldn’t. She wanted to hear exactly what they were talking about, but she couldn’t. If you asked her why she wanted those things, then it wouldn’t be because she was worrying about Damon. He could take care of himself just fine seeing as Kevin didn’t look all that unruffled by his appearance.
What she was deeply interested in though, were the words that left Kevin’s mouth before she left the scene. At first there wasn’t any form of reaction towards Damon’s viciousness aside from the slight fear she saw flash before Kevin’s eyes.. but it was gone just as soon as it came. And then with a straight face, he spoke. “I always thought werewolves were lucky to have specific mates paired with them the second they come into being, but I never thought that you of all persons would manage to get two. I guess your stupid moon goddess has a thing for undeserving werewolves, right?”
Sarah’s face twisted upon remembering his exact words. She couldn’t understand what exactly he was saying no matter how hard she thought about it. Two mates? She had never heard of it before. But similarly, she had never heard of a human mated to a werewolf. So the possibility of some werewolves having two mates wasn’t completely ruled out of her mind. However, the possibility of Damon Kalesto having two mates was wholly discarded. There was no way, no freaking way.
“You don’t exactly look like the mate of the man who’s currently fighting his ass off for no good reason. Show some concern will you!” Jason attempted to lighten the mood after realizing that she had been silent for far too long. He stooped in front of her, his stern stare sweeping over her face. He had gotten close without her noticing it, so close that, if Sarah wanted to, she could just give in to the urge to stretch her arm out and slap him across the face.
“I am concerned…. just not about Damon.”
“Did you seriously just say that to your mate’s best bud with the ridiculous expectation that I won’t rat you out? If that’s the case, then you shouldn’t have said anything…” He grinned playfully, easing back until his butt was on the mat and his back was pressed against the sofa in front her. “… because I will, trust me.”
Sarah ran a hand through her hair frustratedly. “I don’t care.”
“You should care. You know how Damon lets every single teeny weeny thing bother him, don’t you? He’ll probably destroy the whole house if I let him know that you’re concerned about that dimwit at the mall instead of him…. So in other words,” His grin widened, “you’re at my mercy.”
“I wasn’t talking about Kevin.”
“Then who are you concerned about?”
She sighed. “It’s not who… it’s what.”
Jason blinked, sitting up straighter. “Alright, then what exactly are you concerned about? You can tell me what’s bothering you if want. I’ll keep my mouth shut this once… but only because you’re Damon’s precious mate.”
Sarah thought about it. She had a strong feeling that he probably wouldn’t give her a direct answer even if she asked, but she couldn’t say for sure.
“What did Kevin mean when he said that Damon had two mates?” She dropped the question on him like a bomb and Jason’s face instantly paled.
He looked away from her and secured his gaze on the floor. “You heard that?” He asked and when Sarah nodded, he rubbed the back of his neck and began shifting uncomfortably over and over again with his lips pressed closely together. “He was just talking shit. Don’t mind him.”
Sarah frowned. He was making it too obvious that he knew something. Naturally, it was very frustrating to be conscious of that, but she nodded nonetheless, figuring that pointing it out wouldn’t make it any better. He would probably even go as far as to tell her some stupid unbelievable lie… and that would only make her more hungry for answers.
“Hmmm.” Jason hummed in relief after realizing that she had successfully dropped the topic. He slapped his hand against his thigh and he readied himself to get up. “Aren’t you bored? Wanna go for a walk before Damon comes?”
She shook her head. “My legs aren’t in the mood for a walk.”
He smirked in response. “Have you forgotten that you have a werewolf right here? I can carry more than twenty full frown humans… and I’m not kidding. My wolf form is pretty awesome if I do say so myself.” A smug look swarmed his features, despite the fact that everything he said was a lie. He could barely even manage one person with the bean-sized wolf form he had.
But the lie was worth it since the sulky look evaporated from Sarah’s eyes and instantly brightened up with excitement. From a young age, she had always been intrigued by werewolf’s peculiar colours and appearances whenever they shifted, but it had been so long since she had seen it happen that she totally forgot that wolf forms existed. And lucky enough, she had just been offered to not only witness a transformation but to also ride it’s back.
“You’re going to let me ride you?” She jumped from her seat with her lips spreading across her face.
“If you put it like that, I’d say no.” He scrunched up his nose. “But if you asked if I’d let you ride on my back, then I’d say hell yes! What are you waiti-”
Jason clamped his mouth closed when he suddenly remembered that Damon had strictly banned him from shifting in front of her. He frowned, flopping down in the sofa. His cheerful vibe retreated and a sullen look passed over him. “Hold your horses. I don’t think this is a very good idea. Damon prohibited me from shifting in your presence after claiming that you’re too much of a scaredy cat. But…” He held up his index finger as a mischievous thought delved into his mind. “… because I’m awesome, I might let you have a short peek. However, in exchange, I need every drop of ice-cream you have in this unnecessarily large dump. What do you say? Deal? Or no d–”
Jason clamped his mouth shut again, but this time it wasn’t because he had remembered something very important… it was because of the footsteps he heard approaching the front door. “Damon’s back.” He announced, reluctantly rising to his feet. “I can practically smell his anger. I should probably get going if I want to live another day. He’s currently in the mood to destroy any and everything in his path… of course, except for you.”
Without a word, Sarah watched in annoyance as Jason retreated to the front door, while Damon’s figure walked closer until he was standing in the midst of her vision with his face and body covered in blood. Despite his barbaric appearance, Sarah’s frown had returned… And it would probably stay for as long as she was in his presence.
