John
I couldn’t believe this happened.
The moment Blake called me in the middle of the night, I thought what the heck?
But he was the boss and he couldn’t ignore him. He was lucky because I was not with Karen or I might have lectured him until tomorrow. I thought he needed something first thing in the morning. Life as a Boss; sometimes he needed something to be done urgently and by the last minute no matter how much organized I was.
So, when I picked up the phone and he didn’t make any sound, I was worried. He rarely did that and when he did, that was because he had a fight with Olivia and he wanted to ask some suggestions from me. Man to man. And when he was on the phone, when he sounded so broken, like there was no soul from him, I immediately knew something wrong just happened.
But this…was not something I was expecting.
Not when he told me Olivia had a car crash and it happened right in front of his eyes.
“Oh, God. Olivia,” Karen sobbed beside me. Crying terribly. I told her about her best friend right after Blake informed me. She deserved to know although it was currently midnight, way past midnight, Karen deserved to know. She wanted to go to the hospital by herself but I said I would pick her up. She was mad at me because she couldn’t wait any longer knowing her best friend was dying. In the end, she drove her own car to the hospital. I knew she probably had driven recklessly. Just for Olivia.
Olivia’s parents had arrived and Cindy was crying as well, worried about her daughter. None of them got the chance to see Olivia’s condition first before she entered the surgery room but based on how Blake looked like a living corpse, practically like a person with no soul, I had my answer already.
It was bad.
I wanted to know how did it happen. Whether they had a fight which was impossible since I heard nothing about it. Because if Blake had a fight with Olivia, he would show it in the office and told me, but none of that happened. Blake was terrible at hiding his emotion when Olivia was involved.
For the start, I thought there was something weird when Olivia didn’t show up at the office like usual. Blake said she was tired and would wait for him at his house. “How did it happen to her?” Karen suddenly asked, snapping me from my thoughts. “Why? Why it has to be her?” she asked and cried again. I wrapped my arm around her shoulder, bringing her closer and rubbing it. “She has to be okay. For everyone’s sake, especially Blake.”
I could only nod my head in agreement.
The others might be okay, but Blake had to be okay. If something happened to her, Blake would snap in an instant.
I wanted to interrogate my Boss but he still looked like he didn’t want to talk. He was still standing in front of the surgery room’s door. Never moved an inch ever since Olivia got in there. When I arrived here, I was the first person to be here, I asked Blake but he didn’t say anything. I knew he was in no position to talk but he had informed me through the phone that Olivia was hit by a very fast car on the crosswalk in front of him. At least I knew what happened, but not the detail yet.
“How did it happen, Blake?” I looked to the side and saw Cindy. It has been an hour since Olivia was there and even Cindy knew Blake’s condition. But she was at her limit already while Blake was still in his trance state. “I ask you a question, Blake. And I demand some answers,” she demanded and she touched his elbow. Bad move.
I let Karen go and went to them. “Goddamn it, Blake! Tell me!”
“Cindy, enough!” Taylor scolded. I stepped in and stopped his wife before her brother snapped at her. That would be the last thing Blake wanted to do. To hurt his sister.
“I have the right to know what happened to our daughter, Taylor!”
“Cindy, please calm down,” I said.
“You can’t force him to say something now, Cindy. Even Blake is in shock right now,” Taylor calmed her down as well.
Cindy was like wanted to say something. It was already at the tip of her tongue but she held it back and only threw herself to Taylor’s chest and started to cry again. “My baby girl Olivia…”
It was painful to see Cindy in this state. I knew her for quite a while since I started to work for her brother. Cindy always looked cheerful. Although she was sad about something, particularly about her brother-she always looked strong. And now…she looked so broken.
“John?” Jasper-Blake’s father walked closer to us. I peeked behind him and saw Eric was on Nancy-his wife’s hold. It was by coincidence his parents were in Cindy’s house. “Do you know what happened?”
I turned to Blake, thinking to ask for permission if I was allowed to tell his father. Nope, he was not going to talk to me. I took things to my hands and told him what I knew. “A car hit her. That’s all I know.”
“I see.” Not even Jasper could continue interrogating me. I was telling the truth. That was all I knew. I saw Taylor escorted Cindy back to the chair and rubbed his wife’s back, trying to assure her. I wanted to do the same to Blake but it was useless. The stubborn man won’t move at all. Jasper touched my shoulder, bringing my attention back to my Boss’s father. He smiled. “Olivia will be okay,” he said. Or maybe…he hoped. I could only nod my head as he returned to his wife.
We were waiting for another two hours and as usual; Blake never moved. He was staring at the operating room. Hoping when the Doctor came out, he would tell him the good news that his woman was fine and she was ready to go home. Fuck, he won’t let her out of his sight anymore. He would have probably locked her in his house so he could monitor his woman’s every single move twenty-four seven.
But it was not just him; everyone here was hoping the same. And finally, the door was opened and for the first time after three hours-Blake moved and walked towards the Doctor who was still wearing his surgery clothes.
We immediately stood up from our seats and approached the Asian-looking Doctor. “Doctor, how’s my daughter?” Cindy immediately asked.
He opened his mask, exhaling as he turned to see Cindy. “Are you her mother, ma’am?” he asked politely.
“Yes, I am.”
“Well, good news and bad news.” Oh, fuck. “The good news is she has passed the critical condition. The bad news is her left ribs are broken as well as her left leg. The car might have hit her left side very hard and she had to walk with crutches or she has to be in a wheelchair for the time being. Her spine is fine as well so I can safely say she won’t be facing any paralysis in the future.”
“Oh, thank God,” Cindy said. She looked grateful but I knew there was something wrong. I peeked at Blake and even he could see there was something more. Because based on the Doctor’s expression, he was not that happy. He still had something to say and it was not good at all. He didn’t even smile a bit even though Olivia had some injuries within her.
I had to make him spilled everything. For everyone’s sake. “Is there more you would like to say, Doc? Don’t hide anything from us,” I demanded and he looked at me.
“Well, her head is fine as well. There’s no internal bleeding but she hit her head very hard. Maybe when she fell to the street so she won’t be waking up anytime soon,” he explained but I continued to stare at him. He still had something.
“Go on,” I demanded again.
“Excuse me, sir. Are you her boyfriend?”
“What? No, why?”
“Well, the thing is—”
“I am,” Blake cut his words. Everyone’s eyes were practically on him, including the Doctor. “I am her boyfriend, Doctor. Is there a problem?” he asked which surprised the Doctor. Obviously, he knew who Blake Morgan was but he better not questioned it now or spread the news tomorrow if he still wanted to keep his job.
“Doctor, is there something wrong?” Taylor asked.
The Doctor blinked and turned to Taylor. “While we were doing the surgery, me and my team checked on her body. We did an X-ray to looked for any broken bones and we found something odd around her stomach.” I could tell everyone was literally holding their breath. Me included. “To cure our curiosity, we did an ultrasound just to make sure and we found out that Olivia…was fifteen days pregnant.” What?
Olivia was pregnant?
That was…good news. Olivia was pregnant but…
Olivia was fifteen days pregnant. No. Fucking. Way.
“Doctor?” I called and he turned his soft brown eyes back to me again. Even he knew what I was referring to when I called him out. “You said, was. Why?”
He inhaled. “It’s hard for me to say this but, unfortunately, Olivia has a miscarriage. I’m deeply sorry.” His tone was heavy. It was hard for him to inform us. To Blake.
Olivia lost her baby.
Blake lost his child.
This couldn’t be fucking happening.
“She will be moved to her room later after we finished the administration and she has to stay for a couple of weeks. We…tried our best. We’re sorry we couldn’t save the child.”
“No, Doctor. Thank you,” Taylor said as the Doctor excused himself.
Nobody was moving.
Cindy teared up again as Taylor brought her to his chest. Jasper went to his wife and hugged her too together with Eric who didn’t understand anything. I felt Karen’s hand on my back as I turned to her slowly. Tears began to pour down her beautiful face again and I pulled her to my chest as well.
It was a bittersweet moment. At one point, we were glad because Olivia was okay and alive but it cost her and Blake, their baby. Their unborn baby.
I slightly turned to where Blake was but once again, he didn’t move at all. But then he turned his head to me. His eyes were not lifeless anymore. It hinted anger and murderous. I didn’t need to ask him and when he finally walked past me, I knew had to let her go. For now.
I slowly pushed her from me and kissed her forehead. “I’ll be right back.” She nodded her head and I followed my Boss. I found him at the entrance door. His back was on me as I slowly walked towards him. When he looked at me before, I knew those eyes very well. It was the eyes he showed when he was ready to torture someone. Even worse.
I knew Blake had an idea who did this to Olivia. He was there when it happened. It was time for me to interrogate him. As Blake sensed my presence, “John,” he called.
“What do you want me to do, Boss?” Blake turned to me, again with those wicked eyes. Even I was trembling in place.
Blake was angry, no, he was furious. He was ready to commit anything to the person who did to his woman. Even if he had to go to jail for the sin he was about to commit, he was so fucking ready. The switch was on. No one could stop him now.
“Find that bitch, John. And bring her to me.” His tone was cold. Demanding. Furious. Murderous.
I wrinkled my eyebrows. “Who is the bitch?”
“Carlotta fucking Rivers.”
