At Seralinee Jonse hospital
“Why isn’t Mia allowed to be present in the next surgery” Melinda was having a board meeting with doctor Sanchez and other members of the board which consisted mainly of the shareholders.
“Because I don’t want her to…you saw what she did the other day. She doesn’t follow rules and she doesn’t take directions and so how do you expect somebody like that to be able to carry out a heart transplant” doctor Sanchez replied plainly.
“She is here to learn and she can never be a good cardio-surgeon if you keep making her do the job of a nurse.
Checking the color of the patient’s poop and checking their temperature as well isn’t her job.
You need to teach her and treat her the same way you treat others” Melinda was very mad at Sanchez who didn’t seem to care.
“All those things you mentioned are very important tasks” doctor Sanchez shrugged.
“I have told you doctor Sanchez unless you want to lose your job I would advise you to do as I have told you ” Melinda threatened him in front of the other members.
“You can’t fire me.. I am also a member of this board I have percentage share in this hospital” doctor Sanchez was trying to be stubborn.
“Yes you own 10% and I own 60% in which the rest 30 is owned by other members. So whether you like it or not, I am your boss” Melinda gave him a Stern look.
“This isn’t right” doctor Sanchez grumbled as he walked out of the meeting angrily.
This was Mia’s first time actually being part of a surgery…other times she was absent whenever a surgery was going on mainly because doctor Sanchez would send her on useless errands.
The times she spent in the theatre while a surgery was going on was either because he wasn’t the one in charge of that particular surgery or she normally peeped through the door.
Mia never knew she would be the one doing such a complicated surgery.
Melinda stood upstairs looking at her Mia through the glass roof. It was a very unique feature the hospital had which allowed only the management to access the door to this special glass roof so that they could monitor how their doctors performed.
“She is very good,” Melinda’s mom told her as she looked at Mia.
“Yes…she is but Sanchez here had just refused to give her the chance to prove herself” Melinda replied to her mother.
“How did you find her?” Melinda’s mom asked her.
“I didn’t go in search of her mom…destiny brought her to me” Melinda smiled mischievously.
“I hope she doesn’t come in between you and your husband and your daughter…your real daughter” Melinda’s mom made Melinda face her as she spoke to her.
“No she won’t” Melinda gave a faint smile.
Meanwhile at Mara’s court hearing
“The case may now begin” the male judge said in his deep voice as he sat down. Upon hearing this everyone in court who was initially standing when he entered took their seats as well.
“Your honor, I really don’t see any reason for this case to continue. It is obvious that this man murdered his brother’s wife for reasons best known to him…all the evidence points to him” the opposing lawyer began his statement.
“Objection my Lord!” Mara tried to speak as she stood up.
“Objection overruled…let him finish” the judge said, silencing her.
“If I may then I would like to ask the accused a few questions” the opposing male lawyer went towards the witness box where the accused stood.
“Where were you at exactly 9am when your sister in-law was murdered?” The lawyer asked.
“I was at home,” the accused answered.
“And did you or did you not hear the gunshots?” The lawyer asked again.
“I heard it and I ran out of the bathroom to check on her before I rushed upstairs to put on my clothes.
”The accused lowered his head as he was tired of answering the same questions over and over again.
“So you came out of the bathroom naked when you heard the gunshot” the lawyer asked another yet frustrating question.
“No, I had wrapped a towel around my waist,” the accused answered.
“Objection my Lord! Why is the opposing counsel wasting the court’s time by asking the accused the same question he had asked at the last hearing?” Mara stood up and spoke.
“Objection sustained…can you please get to your point?” The judge told the opposing counsel.
“I’m done my Lord…I just want to check if his statements were going to change” the lawyer left the witness box to take his seat.
“No they didn’t and as your fellow counsel has said…you are wasting the court’s time” the judge was disappointed.
Mara suddenly started coughing as she struggled to cover her mouth with a white handkerchief so as not to spread her cough to anyone else.
“I think you need a 5 minutes break” the judge granted Mara and the entire court had 5 minutes break when he noticed that Mara’s cough wasn’t dying down.
“What are you planning?” Keren walked up to Mara once they were outside the courtroom.
“What do you mean by that? I was coughing so it wasn’t wrong for the judge to give us a break…we all needed it …I was so tense in there” Mara heaved a sigh of relief.
“Mara don’t you even try to lie to me. I am not stupid…I know you plus you were fine yesterday and until this morning when you arrived in court.
So what’s up with the fake cough?” Keren was sure to whisper the last part. Mara smirked and scoffed.
“I’m glad you know me…I have to go do something now before the break is over?” Mara walked away from Keren.
“Oh God…everything is in your hands now please let him come out” Mara made a short prayer before she bumped into the judge.
