At the hospital
In Mara’s hospital room
“How are you feeling baby?” Mara’s mom sat beside her daughter on the hospital bed.
“I am a fine mom but where the hell I’m I?” Mara was very confused as she rubbed her forehead with her palm.
“Mara you are in the hospital” Charlotte dived into the conversation as she walked into the room.
“Did your constant complaining or maybe mum’s constant nagging land me here?” Mara asked rhetorically.
“I will hit you if you don’t shut up. ” Mara’s mum was being rather feisty as a tear escaped from her eye.
“No, why are you crying mom? I didn’t die. If I did then what would you have done?” Mara asked her mother in a very soft voice.
“Please don’t ever talk of you dying because I don’t know what would happen to me if I am to lose you” Mara’s mum wiped her tears with the back of her palm.
“Nothing is going to happen okay?” Mara also wiped her mom’s face.
Mara’s mum closed her eyes slowly and nodded her head vertically.
After a long slow month of recovery.
At Mara’s mansion
“So you have also developed this bad drinking habit haven’t you?” Keren walked up to her from behind as she met Mara with a glass of wine in her hand while she sat on her chair backing her.
“You also know that you have to knock before entering my office?” Mara rolled her eyes as she dropped the drink on her study table.
“Don’t worry it’s non-alcoholic…your drinking habits didn’t rub off on me” Mara stood up from her chair as she let out a deep breath.
“So what case are you working on now?” Keren took a seat beside her.
“Drugs” Mara looked at Keren to see her reaction.
“You still haven’t forgiven me for what I did to you 10 years ago huh?” Keren scoffed.
“I thought sending you to law school as you requested would make you forget that incident” Keren sighed in disappointment.
“You almost killed me and my family. You made me sell drugs for you in the name of lady products…have you thought about what could have happened to us if we didn’t catch up to you on time?!!” Mara slammed her hand on her desk in front of her.
“But I didn’t leave you Mara…I cared for you and I still do care for you… I called you to inform you and nothing would have happened because you made it on time.
So why do you still live in the past?. Don’t forget that everything you have now…your wealth, your power and your title of being a lawyer I made it possible” Keren also stood up angrily.
Mara just scoffed and nodded her head horizontally…she knew that Keren was saying the truth and she wasn’t even going to deny that fact.
“Don’t forget I also put a lot of effort into it so don’t take all the credit for yourself” Mara sat back down.
“I know” Keren slowly sat down as a smirk crawled on her face.
She didn’t know why but she had always liked Mara. She knew Mara was special but she just couldn’t place her finger on what made her special.
“I see…murder case” Keren flipped through the file that was in front of Mara.
“I don’t think this man is guilty but all the evidence just seems to point to him…I don’t know what else to do.
Maybe I should just tell him to plea guilty then the court might consider giving him life in prisonment rather than the death penalty” Mara shook her head before she rested it on her palm with her elbow resting on the table.
“How sure are you of his innocence?” Keren kept on going through the file.
“98 out of a 100” Mara replied.
“So the gun was found in his room after his sister in law was murdered?” Keren nodded her head as she continued to read up his case.
“Yes and he was the only one at home at the time of her death. Fingerprints were also found on the gun” Mara replied.
“Last night while looking for my earring I found it in your room and I’m guessing it fell off without me knowing that doesn’t mean you stole it or anything?” Keren lowered her gaze.
“I know Keren but just telling the court this doesn’t make the case any simpler” Mara was trying her best to see the sense in what Keren was telling her.
“I know you will make a way for them to understand and as for the fingerprints…you should try to get them checked, at least to know if they match that of the man…after all you are Mara you can do anything” Keren tapped Mara on the shoulder before leaving.
Throughout her years as a practicing lawyer she has never seen such a case like this. As a matter of fact she got shot when she was trying to do her own investigation.
She knew that there was more to the case and thankfully the court granted another month when she was attacked but despite this one month she still hasn’t been able to find a solution.
She seemed to have no choice but to do what Keren told her.
At Mia’s rented apartment
“I am so happy Mia…you were like a heroine out there. The way you were pushing her to the theatre like some kind of superwoman, not even that bossy doctor Sanchez could have done what you did.
Did you do it because you felt the pain or because she looks like you?” Rose asked Mia, though she wasn’t expecting an answer.
“Both I guess” Mia shrugged, taking off her coat and hanging it on the wall.
“You took such a big risk…you could have lost your job you know, especially since doctor Sanchez isn’t such a big fan of you.
You nearly did though if not for Mrs Melinda” Rose added and took off her shoes throwing herself on the bed.
“I know but I wouldn’t want to be the reason someone loses their life. I couldn’t save my parents, at least I managed to save my sister” Mia said, mumbling that last part so that Rose couldn’t hear her but there was no need as her friend had already fallen into a deep sleep.
