Chapter 87 The million dollar reward

Book:Mia and Mara Published:2024-5-1

At Lakshmi’s house
“Mum!!” I jumped up from the chair and went to hug my mother. I was more than happy to see her, it has been nearly a month now and I haven’t even set my eyes on her.
“I see someone missed me alot” my mum smiled as she hugged me back.
“More than alot mom. A lot isn’t even the right word to qualify how much I missed you” I had a beaming smile on my face.
“Hmm…I can see that but where is your brother?” My mum stretched her neck as she looked for any signs of him but she couldn’t find him.
“He went out mum” I lied…well it wasn’t a complete lie though. He went out like three days ago.
I tried to stop him but he kept on insisting, my brother hadn’t just lost his memory but his senses as well.. if not then why would he just suddenly take his things and leave without telling anyone.
The truth couldn’t be hidden for long. My lie was beginning to come to surface. Both my parents were home and it was already so late but there was no sign of my brother.
“Lakshmi you said your brother went out?” My mum asked me and my heart skipped a beat as I put my phone down to face her.
“Yes mum” I nodded my head vertically.
“So where is he? Why hasn’t he returned?” My dad snatched the words out of my mum’s mouth right before she could say them.
“Uhrm…. he..” I stammered. I didn’t know what to say, what was I going to tell them?
That a witch almost killed my brother and my best friend who also has powers helped save him but now he has lost his memory and has run off to go find his dead mother?.
That didn’t even sound believable in the slightest.
“Say something” my mum insisted and I could sense the panick in her voice.
“Well mum Scott …. Scott is gone” I finally confessed.
“Gone to where” my mum was even more worried this time.
“You don’t mean he is dead do you?” My dad had already thought way too far.
“Honey you shouldn’t say such,” my mum warned my dad. She was seriously panicking.
“Answer me!” My mum yelled at me and stood up from the chair.
“Scott had a bad head injury…lost some parts of his memory and now he has gone to find his dead mother” I said in a heartbeat.
“WHAT!!” Both my parents exclaimed at the same time.
“Yes” I replied even if it didn’t make full sense. At least I had managed to come up with a more believable story but would they believe it though?
“Tell me that is a lie?” My mum broke down immediately as she hastily sat down on the couch with her palm on her forehead trying to get all the information right.
“Calm down honey” my dad rubbed my mum’s back as he poured her the glass of water I had rushed to get her.
“Why didn’t you stop him?!!” My dad thundered, almost hitting me but he managed to stop himself.
“I would have if I was awake dad. He left so early in the morning…I am guessing maybe 4 or 5 in the morning and the only person that saw him was the gate man who he managed to trick” I confessed openly as I moved farther away from my parents.
“What are we going to do now?” My mum hugged my dad’s waist as he stood over her.
I made my way to my room and locked the door. I didn’t want to see their faces because it would only hurt me more since I was also at fault.
I couldn’t protect my brother from that witch but she would pay for what she has done to my brother.
The next day my dad had begun the search for my brother with his pictures all over the news and also a cash reward of one million dollars was to be offered to anyone who could give him tangible information about Scott’s whereabouts but that didn’t help at all.
The funniest thing is that Alyssa has also been absent from school for the past two weeks that my brother has been missing.
Could it be that she knows something about my brother’s whereabouts?
At a random street in the country
Mia had just returned from a bookstore when she bumped into someone…she bent down to pick up her bag as she rubbed her eyes and picked up her broken medicated glasses.
“Sorry” she offered an apology to whoever it was that she collided with, without looking up to see who it was.
She staggered backwards the moment her eyes met with the person. She couldn’t believe who it was.
Lakshmi’s POV
You can never tell how selfish people can be until you offer reward money. That is when people will start showing up with false reports.
This was the third fake report that my dad got about Scott’s whereabouts in one week. The woman had claimed to see my brother in a bus.
Wtf! Do these people think that my parents are so dumb. Not too long after my dad practically chased the woman away…another woman came into the house also claiming to have seen my brother but in the strangest place.
“So you saw my son in a cemetery!” My dad was marveled.
“Yes” she was so sure. The firmness and certainty in her voice was on another level.
“Oh my gosh!” My dad slapped his forehead as he threw himself backward. It kinda made me giggle but what if the woman was right?
“Please get out of my house!” My dad said calmly but yet frightening and the woman who once spoke with confidence was so frightened that she ran away.
I don’t know why but something urged me to run after her. There was more to the whole thing and deep inside I felt like she was telling the truth…I could be wrong but there is no harm in trying.
