CHAPTER 12 Fighting for my voice

Book:Mia and Mara Published:2024-5-1

Mia bent behind a car parked on the street to pick the ball when she heard some voices and perceived some cigarettes.
“We have to be really careful when we go in there to get Miss Melinda tonight, she is very precious and we cannot afford to hurt her if not we won’t get any money as ransom” a man smoking cigarettes was explaining to two other guys who stood in front of him.
Mia refused to get up at that point, she stayed there to listen to their entire conversation and they didn’t even notice the little child that bent down behind their car when they got in and drove away. According to what Mia heard, they had come to survey the place and find out how far a police station was from the location. They were to come at 9pm.
“They are coming, we should be ready” Mia kept on repeating to a very confused Melinda.
“Mia calm down and tell me who is coming” Melinda bent down and held Mia’s shoulder.
“You have to leave, they want you,” Mia replied.
Mia just couldn’t explain everything she heard and saw. Throughout the day Mia tried her best to say it but she couldn’t so everyone just shoved Mia’s words aside
But Mia wasn’t ready to give up, she wanted to do something on her own to stop those criminals with or without anyone’s help. Though Mia couldn’t express her thoughts and feelings but she had really grown fond of Melinda, she was the only one who listened to her and tried to understand her. She wasn’t going to let them take her away like that.
She thought of various ways she could do that. The other kids were watching a movie which showed scenes of traps so Mia decided to do that.
She already set nails just outside the gate of the orphanage then she made a Halloween witch, it giggled and laughed. She got fake cobwebs from the Halloween box.
And she could dim the lights with the help of Rebecca who saw how hard she was working and offered to lend a hand. Rebecca slept in the same bunk bed with Mia, except Rebecca slept at the top while Mia slept at the bottom.
“You know we don’t have to do all this. We can just get Miss Melinda to call the police if you think she might be in danger” Rebecca tried to convince Mia to stop what she was doing.
“Please don’t leave this position tonight. It’s important” Mia reminded Rebecca before finishing up the other things she had prepared.
At exactly 9pm that night, Melinda was in for the shock of her life.
“What do you mean all the tyres are flat?” a masked guy asked 2 other armed guys who got out of the car, checking and observing the car.
“I’m sure it’s because of these nails. Why are there so many nails outside an orphanage?” Another scoffed, this time in frustration.
“It’s okay. That won’t stop us from doing what we want. You go and change the tyres while the rest of us will go inside and keep them busy” the first one who looked more musculine and had a deeper voice than the rest gave the instruction to the shorter one who obeyed immediately.
They somehow managed to climb the fence and when they got into the orphanage, the doors were tightly shut, there was no way in.
One of them brought out and instrument and inserted it into the door keyhole. He began to make a rotationary movement and the door slowly opened, he signaled to the rest to come inside as they conducted everything so quietly. As soon as they tried to pass the orphanage’s door, they were stuck in cobwebs.
“What the heck?” The tallest of them tried to remove the cobwebs from his face, he didn’t look happy while doing it at all.
“Are these real or fake? Why can’t I see? They are so sticky” The musculine one was lamenting.
With great efforts they were able to get all the cobwebs off their faces but they were in for the next surprise. They saw a shadow move so quickly, initially they thought someone in the orphanage was still awake but then the shadow kept on moving in different places, it kept getting bigger and closer.
They are still in the living room, they hadn’t gone upstairs to any of the rooms yet and they were already getting frustrated.
“Are you sure this place isn’t haunted?” the short one began to ask the muscular one, he seemed to be getting scared.
“You have watched too many movies and it’s starting to affect your reasoning. There is no such thing as a haunted house. Now let’s grab Miss Melinda and go so we can get our cash” the muscular one instructed the other 2 who put their guns in front of them, bending down to walk slowly. Just when they got to the bottom of the stairs, they stepped into something very sticky, they couldn’t move.
Just then a flying witch in black came from the ceiling with a loud laughter, she was on a broom and chanting.
“I can see you, I want you, yes you” she kept on moving in a circular motion before the lights started to go on and off.
A deeper voice also began to speak
“Very tasty people. I can see you” by this time they were scared to death and tried to run by slipping their feet from their shoes, but they fell and the sticky stuff was on the stairs as they were stuck to the floor.
The place became fuggy all of a sudden, everything was going well for Mia until the flying witch crashed to the floor with her broom and landed in one of their heads.
“This thing is fake ” the musculine one declared.
“But the sticky stufff isn’t and the white smoke seems like a fug to me,” the tallest one added. Just then all the kids in the orphanage and Melinda came down the stairs from the other end and were laughing at them. Everyone was praising Mia for her intense work and bravery but the masked guys heard their vehicle’s horn blowing outside.
They were still determined to take Melinda away with them, they picked up their guns and pointed it at the little kids that became very scared instantly at the sight of the gun.
“We may be stuck but we can still shoot you so better get us from the place or else we will..” before the musculine one could finish his statement, Mia came to their faces with pepper spray, while trying to protect his eyes from the spray, accidently he shot the bullet, hitting Melinda in the leg.
Mia’s world came to a halt at once, in fact she started feeling dizzy unnecessarily.
“Ooh my God ” Melinda screamed as she fell on the floor and watched her blood gushing. Mia found courage and increased the fug in the machine, carefully she slowly went closer to the guns from the masked men without their notice, she took off their mask as well.
” This is all you fault Mia” the kids that were praising Mia earlier on suddenly turned against Mia but she didn’t even say a word to any of them. She left them all in the sitting room and went to get a small knife.
She turned off the fug machine and brought a lamp, she pleaded with Rebecca who was the only person not castigating her to help her hold the lamp. Rebecca only blinked her eyes slowly, agreeing to Mia’s request.
“What do you want to do Mia? just call the ambulance and the police” Melinda was more than frightened as she looked at the little girl. Mia didn’t even listen to her, she used some alcohol she found to wash the knife before she carefully dug the knife into Melinda’s leg and brought out the bullet.
“Ahhhhh” Melinda yelped in pain but that didn’t seem to affect Mia at all. Mia pressed Melinda’s leg and a huge amount of blood gushed out but she used her hand to cover the wound, putting pressure on it and managing to stop Melinda’s blood from gushing out too much.
Melinda’s breathing suddenly increased and she closed her eyes, not wanting to see any of it. Many of the kids also closed their eyes before Mia ran to get a cloth to cover the wound.
The people who came to attack Melinda shook their heads in amazement, they hadn’t witnessed such a thing before and never in their lives did they think that it was possible for an 8 year old to do such a thing without being disgusted.
Mia looked at Melinda who had begun crying already out of pain as she sat on the floor with her legs wide open in her own pool of blood.
Mia noticed that Melinda didn’t like the sight of blood so she brought a rag and a bucket of water to clean the blood off the floor. Then she went closer to Melinda and started to rub her back making attempts to calm her down. It actually worked as Melinda was very calm until she heard two different loud sirens from two different vehicles. Then the noise distracted her and she almost panicked.
The men knew they were done for and tried to stand up but obviously they couldn’t, after making too many failed attempts they finally gave up, waiting for their doom and the rewards of their horrible actions.
