At the airport
Lilians’s POV
My heart beat increased its pace and I could feel that any moment, my heart would just jump out from my chest. So many security measures had been put in place in the airport, my Visa and passport had also been banned so I could only leave the country with my fake visa and passport. I was in the queue and it was my turn to check my thumbprint.
It was a new means used to verify if the individual in the passport is actually the person traveling and the security in the airport was enough evidence for me to know that they actually came for me. They were checking mostly the women.
“Okay ma’am you are clear to go” the lady that was attending to me told me and gave me a big smile as she handed me my passport all thanks to this fake thumb.
I was so relieved but the game wasn’t over yet, so I submitted my luggage and it was checked. We were informed that the plane would take off in the next 5 minutes.
“The flight going to UAE, Dubai has been delayed” someone suddenly took the mic from the person talking and announced.
Everyone began to mumble as to why the flight was canceled when the weather was okay.
Then I saw a group of officers holding my picture and asking everyone if they had seen me. That was not a good sign at all, my fear which had disappeared came back and I thought I would actually urinate on myself. After some time, it was announced for the second time that the plane would be taking off soon. I got in the plane but just when we were about to take off the police officers stormed the place.
“You can’t take off, there is a criminal in here. A drug dealer and a child abuser” the officer was trying to reason with the pilot so the search began in the plane again. They couldn’t find anything, they came down and the plane took off, finally I could breath well again. Goodbye my past, here comes a new world. I stretched my arms and fell asleep.
At a random orphanage home.
“Miss Melinda, Miss Melinda” a little girl ran towards a curvy lady that was seated in front of a small orphanage home.
“What is it Rebecca? I have told you to stop running” the lady stood up and carried the little child as she planted kisses on her cheeks and forehead.
“I’m sorry miss Melinda ” the little girl covered her face with her palm but suddenly her attention was geared towards a little child that stood alone, watching other kids play. She dropped the child she was crying and then she approached the child and began to talk to her softly.
“Do you want to play the game with others?” She was sad while she asked the little girl who gave her no reply.
“We can play our own game if you like?” She spoke to the little girl who just stood there quietly watching other kids play.
“I like your perfume” the little child finally replied before walking away from Melinda.
“Miss Melinda why doesn’t Mia talk to anyone, so far the only thing she has managed to say to us was her name” innocent Rebecca asked Melinda who couldn’t give her any tangible explanation because she was also lost as to why this child would say the weirdest thing that had nothing to do with the conversation one would be having with her.
“You know she also doesn’t eat with us, some days she doesn’t eat at all” Rebecca said once again before Melinda asked her to go play with the rest of the kids.
Melinda had found little Mia walking under the rain at midnight. She tried to ask Mia who she was, where she came from and who her parents were but Mia could only say her name so she decided to bring her to the orphanage she owned, Melinda tried all she could to get a hold of anybody related to Mia but Mia just wouldn’t say anything.
Each time someone tried to talk to Mia about something her response would always be.
“My name is Mia” then she would just walk away.
Though Mia didn’t talk or act like the kids in the orphanage, she was very smart and very peculiar about things. She was never late and always kept things at the right place, she acted more mature than most adults did and it really didn’t seem like a fun childhood to Melinda.
At Mia’s school
“There she goes, the lonely brainy” Mia’s classmate who was just 10 years old whispered to her friends, her name was Emily and she was so used to making fun of Mia. She would pretend to whisper but she made sure that she said everything to Mia’s hearing.
“Acting like she is some goddess,” Emily added and giggled with her friends. Mia was always silent, she didn’t say anything to anyone. Each day Mia went to school, Emily would find new ways to torment her, sometimes she would pull Mia’s hair or throw her books on the floor, one time when Mia bent down to pick her books up, Emily stepped on Mia’s hand but this time she crossed the line.
“Mia, where are you going?” Emily walked alongside Mia who wasn’t paying any attention to her
“Do you want to see your mummy?” Emily asked and pretended as if she was about to cry.
“Oh wait, you don’t have a mummy or a daddy” Emily laughed, she was simply nothing but a spoiled brat who taunted other kids just because her parents were in partnership with the owners of the school.
Mia, who didn’t even spare Emily a glance initially, turned to look at Emily with her breathing heavily and giving Emily a killer look. Mia pushed Emily to the floor and pounced on her, Emily raised an alarm and she was soon taken off Emily.
“I didn’t do anything to her teacher, I promise” Emily wept
“I’m sure” the teacher rolled her eyes away, knowing both of the girls fully well.
Both of the girls were sent to the principal’s office and the very inquisitive principal decided to find out what would make Mia who barely said a word attack Emily in such a manner.
“What happened girls? Why did both of you feel the need to pounce on each other? You are too young for that” the principal was trying her best to sound as loving and caring as she could so the kids wouldn’t feel guilty that they were being scolded.
“Principal you have to believe me, I was just walking with my friends when Mia just came out from nowhere and pushed me to the floor. I don’t even know what I did to her, I want my mummy” Emily buried her face in her palms and began to cry, sounding very innocent.
“She is lying” Mia kept on repeating and panicking. Her body was shaking and she couldn’t say any other words.
“She is lying. I didn’t look for her trouble, she made me do it. She is lying” Mia said over and over again. The principal couldn’t just get her to stop and at the end of the day, Mia wasn’t allowed to enter the class and learn with other kids. Mia was sent home and asked to stay home for 3 days, the school authority just felt like to a point Mia was mentally unstable.
Mia laid on her bed as she thought of the event that happened earlier in the day.
“So, your principal called me and told me what happened. Do you want to tell me what happened in school today?” Melinda sat close to Mia’s bunk bed which she laid on the lower bed.
“Please” she pleaded after Mia’s long minutes of silence. She was about to leave when Mia stopped her with her words.
“She told me I didn’t have a mum,” Mia said slowly as she faced the ceiling with her eyes wide open.
Melinda knew the pain Mia was feeling but she still felt Mia went too far by pushing Emily.
“So you pushed her?” Melinda was quite careful with her words.
“She disturbs me alot and she hurts me” Mia faced Melinda this time and then looked away quickly.
“But still, you weren’t right. You should have just told a teacher about it. No matter what someone says to you, you should never attack them unless they attack you first okay?” Melinda parted Mia’s head but Mia didn’t say anything anymore.
Melinda finally gave up and was about to open the door to take her leave.
“I like your night dress, goodnight” Mia complimented Melinda, who couldn’t do anything but smile.
“Goodnight” Melinda wished Mia as well before retiring to her bed.
The next morning, Mia could only watch other kids go to school while she couldn’t, it saddened her but she felt no need whatsoever to speak about it.
“Do you want to play ball?” Melinda came close to Mia that was sitting on the floor reading a textbook. Mia looked at her and looked back at her book without even saying a word.
“Common, it will be fun. You don’t have to do anything, I don’t even know how to play myself, we can just toss it around. Please Mia” Melinda pleaded and Mia stood up from the floor taking the ball from her.
There was a goal post outside and then Mia was to shoot the ball while Melinda was to be the goalkeeper. Once Mia placed the ball in front of her, she looked at the goalpost and the ball then in her head she calculated the best angle to shoot the ball in order to score.
Managing to convince Melinda that she was shooting to the left, she shot the ball towards the right. Melinda was surprised that Mia actually scored the goal, she also tried to score a goal but unfortunately she threw the ball over the fence and Mia went to get it, that was when Mia heard.
