For some reason one of the kidnappers who was waiting outside for his partners who were on a mission inside the house refused to run away when he heard the police siren, probably because he thought they were just passing by but before he could make a move it was too late, the police had stopped and caught him.
They went inside to get the others while nurses rushed from the ambulance to pick up Melinda in a stretcher. The police didn’t really expect to see the kidnappers sitting at a spot just waiting to be arrested. They found the situation really amusing though.
“So how do we take them to the station with us?” A police officer threw the question randomly at any of the kids to answer.
“Ask Mia, she is responsible” a little girl who had been quiet all this while answered.
“Who is Mia?” The police officer bent down and cupped her little face.
She smiled and ran towards Mia who just stood there blinking her eyes as if something fell into them. The officer was walking towards her when Mia ran away and soon returned with a liquid.
She poured it on the floor where the kidnappers were stuck and the sticky stuff began to turn into liquid itself and they were free.
One of them tried to make a run for it but was caught by another police officer.
“What gave you such an idea, little girl?” The officer picked up Mia who kept on kicking her legs and came down at once. She didn’t even say another word to anyone but the police needed a statement.
The ambulance drove to the hospital and the kids were alone in the orphanage so an officer offered to stay the night. Mia couldn’t get herself to sleep as she kept rolling on the bed, Mia wasn’t the kind of person that found it very hard to sleep but at this point she was more than disturbed, if anything were to happen to Melinda she would never be able to forgive herself.
“Mia you have to stop turning on the bed like that, it won’t let me sleep” Rebecca was complaining, trying to spark a conversation between Mia and herself.
I’m sorry” Mia finally settled on the bed without closing her eyes.
“If you want we can go see Miss Melinda tomorrow, I can skip school” Rebecca was trying to cheer Mia up but Mia only replied her with “hmmn”
Somehow the 8 year old finally got herself to sleep but she was in for a surprise when it was time for breakfast.
Everyone had gathered on the breakfast table but this time no one greeted Mia a good morning as usual, not that she normally answered. She shrugged her shoulders and went to sit down when one of the kids took the chair from underneath her right before she could sit, luckily Rebecca caught her on time, preventing from having a bad fall.
“What is wrong with you Peter? Do you want her to get hurt?” Rebecca was very angry and was ready to attack Peter but was stopped by the police officer that passed the night with the kids.
“What is going on here?” He walked into the dining room and found a steaming Rebecca.
“He tried to injure Mia and he is about to get what’s coming” she stretched her hand to slap him across the face but Mia stopped her.
“Leave it Rebecca, let’s have breakfast. You promised me we could go and see Miss Melinda in the hospital today after breakfast” Mia stopped the situation from getting any worse. The officer folded his hand and leaned on the wall as he watched the little kids and he smiled, thinking about his own childhood.
After breakfast, as promised the officer took the kids to go meet Melinda in the hospital. Melinda was so happy to see the kids who ran towards her bed, they didn’t even give Mia a chance to meet Melinda. Mia only stood outside the door and watched how Melinda showered the other kids with love and how she was always rejected as usual.
She turned around and was about to go wait for them in the car when the officer stopped her
“You were the one who made the request to come to the hospital, don’t you want to see Miss Melinda?” He tried to pick her up but she resisted and walked away without saying anything.
Knowing that Melinda was okay was just enough for Mia to be satisfied.
Melinda watched Mia run away and she could understand the pain the little girl was feeling, she just wished she could walk over there and thank the girl for saving her life.
“Miss Melinda Peter is bad” Rebecca blurted out, unable to keep her mouth shut about what happened earlier.
“Why do you say so?” Miss Melinda was quite confused.
“Today, during breakfast Peter pulled Mia’s chair from underneath her just when she was about to sit. He wanted her to fall and get badly injured. He hates her” Rebecca squeezed her face and closed her eyes half way.
“Why would you do such a thing, Peter? That is very wrong and you just made her feel bad. How would you like it if someone did that to you?” Melinda was trying to sound as gentle as she could, not trying to sound too harsh to Peter but trying to convey the information that what he did wasn’t right.
“I’m sorry Miss Melinda but she is the reason you got shot and now you are in the hospital” Peter was almost crying.
“No Peter, that’s not true. She saved my life even when we didn’t want to listen to her when she tried to warn us about their arrival. There was nothing she or anyone could have done to prevent what happened to me okay so don’t be rude to her. She is a good girl and you should try to be a good boy too” Melinda drew little Peter closer and cupped his face while gently stroking his hair.
Mia who was still in the car saw someone, she saw a man she quickly recognized.
“It was him. He was the one who took mummy, he and his friends” Mia began to think to herself. She wanted to jump down from the vehicle and run for her dear life, she was so scared of him. She bent down inside the vehicle and closed her eyes just so she couldn’t be seen by him. She soon opened her eyes and looked at him, then she noticed something.
He was looking around as if he was trying to scan the area. He walked up behind a little baby who was in a stroller and the mother had just turned around to talk to someone, one of his accomplice who was distracting the lady as he tried to take the baby.
Mia was scared but she wasn’t going to let him take that woman’s child the way he took her mummy and daddy, she thought of what to do, because she couldn’t get out of the car so she turned on the siren in the police vehicle.
The noise caused a lot of confusion as the lady herself turned around to see someone trying to take her child from the stroller. She tried to struggle with him but another man held her hands from behind. Mia kept on making the siren go off and at a point she started horning the vehicle. The police officer ran outside the hospital only to see a woman struggling for her child and shot the gun in the air.
Both men stopped their actions at once as they were not armed and made a run for it. And as they ran, they tried to see the person that made so much noise to alert the officer who wasn’t even in the car but they didn’t see anyone there.
” Are you okay ma’am?” The officer ran towards the lady who was struggling to catch her breath.
“Yes thank you” the lady was just so happy that they didn’t take her child away from her.
” The person you should be thanking is the little girl that was making the siren go off, she drew my attention to you” the officer pointed towards the car and the lady tried to go and check who it was but Mia refused to come out of the car initially but after much persuasion from the lady, she finally came out. The lady thanked her and offered her some money which she rejected and hastily got into the car.
“Please take me back. I’m scared” Mia kept on moving back and forth with folded hands as she sat at the back of the car.
“We have to wait for the rest,” the officer clearly reminded her.
Mia wanted to scream at the top of her voice, she wanted to yell out that her life was in serious danger but she knew that there was no use since no one would listen to her. She thought about telling the whole truth to Melinda but she was scared that they would take her back to Lilian. She locked herself in the car and waited patiently for everyone to come out of the hospital.
“I’m sorry Mia” a disappointed Peter sat beside Mia on their way back home. Mia was silent and gave him no reply, not because she was upset with him but because she had more things to worry about.
Rebecca couldn’t take her eyes off Mia while they sat in the car, she could sense that something was wrong with Mia but she didn’t ask why because she knew Mia wouldn’t say anything to her. Now Mia has to be ready for her big surprise.
