Sofia’s pov
I glanced around from side to side as if waiting to find the answer to the question Lola had just asked, hanging in the air and waiting for me to see it. It suddenly felt like I was going crazy, like I was going out of my mind.
I made to say something but ended up slapping my mouth close because nothing was coming forth.
Lola let out an audible sigh and shifted from side to side, a perplexed look on her face as she spoke. “You don’t believe me.”
It wasn’t a question. It was a statement made in a flat voice.
I let out a long sigh and slowly sat up, and then I flexed my hands on the table while wishing I had ordered something on arriving so now, I’d have had a drink to wrap my empty hands around.
“You’re lying.” I finally breathed out, because she has to be. She couldn’t have been telling the truth. It has to be nothing but a lie.
A huff escaped her lips, something that sounded like a half scoff but I paid no mind to that.
“Why don’t you believe me?” She demanded and I found myself rolling my eyes this time.
“Why should I believe you? Why would you even ever think I’d ever believe you?” I shot back in annoyance, eyes narrowing at her at once. I should have known that she was doing nothing but lying, it’s glaringly obvious now, starting from how she had nothing to say the last time we met up. I should have seen this plot coming, the crazy girl who wants my husband, so she decides to spill some dumb lies to me, hoping it would separate me and my husband.
Well, too bad for her cause I’ve been able to catch unto her lie real quick.
She openly snorted this time when she spoke. “What do you need to see before believing me? Some physical proof? That’s it?” She continued and I scoffed in irritation.
“Actually, no. I have seen all the proof I need. I don’t know why you assumed I didn’t see the fact that you were literally drooling over my husband the times we’ve all met up. It should have been obvious to me that you wanted him from the start, and only set this stupid meeting up to plant lies in my head.” A confused and amused look settled on Lola’s face as I spoke but I carried on without hesitation.
“But, unfortunately for you, none of your plans today are going to end up working out. Your plan to plant lies in my head is definitely not going to work. And, you know I’m not that kind of girl to go to war for a man– so just stay away henceforth, please. And never bother me again, please.” I continued, each word coming out low and menacing.
Once I was sure the words had sunk into her head, I picked up my bag and got to my feet, ready to leave the restaurant immediately when Lola spoke.
“I mean, I assumed you were gullible as fuck from the onset and was proven right when it all flew over your head the first time you met me, with Luca also present… but, my god, you really are gullible, it’s almost pitiful to witness to be honest.”
I froze in my footsteps at once, especially because of the next words that followed.
“Luca and I used to fuck, even if you chose to not accept that as the truth, it won’t stop it from being true. You’d also not believe this but your husband threatened to kill me if I revealed it to you, you know?”
My eyes widened in shock as I slowly sank into my seat once again.
“What?” I whispered in shock and confusion.
Lola gave a small shrug of her shoulder. “I was skeptical to reveal this from the onset, because I do value my life and we both know how ruthless your husband is.” She paused for a moment. “But, I’ve wanted to reveal this to you for a while now. Luca asked me not to and promised to kill me if I go ahead and disobey his order.”
I searched her eyes and even though nothing actually called out to me, deep down in my stomach, I could hear some sort of honestly in most of what she was saying. But even with that, I was still finding it hard to accept and agree to what she was saying.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and forced my mind to slow down before attempting to say something. “Okay… so, why now? Why am I just hearing this? Why are you suddenly telling me this?”
Lola was silent at first, and then she slowly reached for my hand atop the table. I pulled my hand away at once, flinching from the touch of her hand like I had just got burnt.
“Don’t do that.” I whispered coldly as I buried my hands on my thighs. Lola sucked in a sharp breath and gave a tense nod of her head, hands getting folded on the table, before she began to speak.
“I’ve always wanted to reveal this to you, you know? From the onset.” She started and I gave a small nod even though I didn’t believe any of what she just admitted. “B- but, Luca– your husband, he ordered me to act like a stranger with him around you so you wouldn’t suspect a thing. It had been eating me up, which is why I tried very hard to find a way to reach you, I guess.”
My mouth was hanging open for a few seconds as her words sank into my head. I couldn’t believe all what I was hearing.
Luca actually asked her to act like she had never met him before around me?
I let out a sigh but it sounded shaky to my ears and the sound made me flinch a little. My entire insides feels unsettled, and I knew I could spend a minute more here.
I got to my feet and picked my bag up, and then I spoke in a low, resigned voice.
“I actually won’t be offering you any protection like I offered to before. I don’t care if Luca acts on his threats and kills you. You can die for all I care.”
