Chapter Forty
Fiona’s POV:
“Oh my God!” I exclaimed.
“I need to leave,” I told Whitman.
“Hold up,” he said.
“Mother asked me to give you this. Make sure you keep it safe,” he told me as I left.
“Where did you go miss?” Ken asked me when I got back.
“I had to go use the restroom,” I said to him.
“Okay,” he answered me unconvinced.
“Mr. Alexander was on the phone, he was checking up on us,” Ken told me.
“Oh, I will give him a call later,” I answered.
I felt very much relieved after seeing Whitman even though we did not have much time together, I knew Mother and Thomas were in good hands.
“You look much happier now,” the costume dressmaker told me.
“I initiated him meeting you,” she told me whispering as she noticed my confusion.
“How did you know about us?” I asked her.
“Leave that to me,” she answered with a wave of hand.
“Wait!” I spoke.
“Did you deliberately bring an undersized wedding dress to the house?” I asked her.
“I got you, sis,” she replied with a wink.
“Thank you,” I said with a smile.
We were done with the fittings, and it was time to leave.
“Thank you for patronizing us,” the lady said as she passed me a bag.
“Thank you,” I replied, and I left.
I turned to leave when someone bumped into me.
“I am so sorry,” he apologized.
It was a man. He was wearing dark shades and a face cap. I could not see his face.
“It is fine,” I said as I bent down to pick up my handbag. Everything in it has spilled to the floor.
“Can I help you?” he asked.
“No,” I replied, and he walked away.
Then, I noticed that he dropped a note.
“If you are ready to bring Harrington down, you can call me,” I read the note silently to myself.
The note had a phone number on it.
“Who is this person?” I asked myself.
“The Harrington has stepped on a lot of toes,” I said to myself as we rode back home.
Again, we were at the mansion, and Alexander and Uncle Victor were nowhere to be found.
“They would have probably gone out,” I thought out loud.
I rushed straight to the room, to see what was written in the book Mother sent.
“This is so thoughtful,” I said happily.
It had the phone numbers of everyone I had come across with including those she thought would be of help, but I did not know.
I started to find a safe place to hide it when Alexander came in.
“Not now,” I said, almost shaking.
Alexander got into the room and looked like someone who was going to punch the person who talked to him in the face.
“What happened to you?” I asked him.
“What were you doing with him?” he asked, ignoring my question.
“With… who?” I stuttered.
“The man,” he replied.
“Look at that face,” he said laughing.
“I was just pulling your legs,” he added.
“I can never do that to you, trust me,” I told him.
“I hope you do not do that and if you do…” he said giggling as he walked away.
“Phew!” I exclaimed.
I thought he found out about my meeting with Whitman. It could have been disastrous.
I saw a safe, then I put the book in it, and then a small piece of paper fell. It was the same paper that the man gave him.
“No, I can’t do this,” I thought of the write-up.
“I need to protect my husband and Uncle Victor,” I said to myself and tore the paper.
It has been some days now and I miss Mother and Thomas so much. My heart aches anytime, I remember that I have not spoken to them in a while.
“Babe, I need a favor from you,” I told Alexander that day.
“What is it?” he asked me.
“I need to speak to my family. Thomas at least,” I begged him.
“But I disposed of your phone. What do you want me to do now?” he asked me.
“I know that you can do something. I miss them a lot,” I replied.
“Maybe you can even ask them to relocate here. I am sure they would agree,” I said to him.
“They?” he asked.
“Who are they?” he asked me again.
“Thomas and my mom. I mean, my aunty, Veronica,” I explained to him.
“Why do you think I would want to harbor a whole lot of people under my roof?” he asked me.
“I know that it is hard, love but I would love to have them around me,” I said.
“Please,” I added.
“I am not promising but I will think about it,” he told me.
“So, when do I get my answer?” I asked.
“I do not know. Leave. I need to be alone,” he told me.
It was time to get my make-up artist, so I went to meet her at his salon. I did not want to be an online thing, so I went in person.
As usual, Ken went with me.
The same man from the bridal store met me again. This time came straight to me.
“Do you still want to protect them?” he asked me.
“Who are you?” I asked him.
“That is not an issue. I am just a person who is concerned for you,” he explained to me.
“Sorry, sir,” I said.
“I don’t think I need your help and never will,” I told him.
I tried leaving but he still sought to convince me.
I left there wondering who the man was and why he was so hell-bent on bringing the Harringtons down.
“I hope he does not turn to hurt me another time,” I said to myself as I made to leave.
I was at a point of not knowing if I should tell Uncle Victor and Alexander about this man, or if I should just leave it to myself.
I got home that day to the biggest surprise of my life.
“Oh, he finally made it happen,” I said as I got into the house.
I was so happy to see them again.
“Welcome,” I said, hugging them tight.
