” Nothing much. Actually there’s nothing about him that you don’t have. The problem is not you, it’s this,” she said clutching her chest where her heart was located.
” This brings the difference between the two of you. While I love you as a friend and brother, I feel something different for David. It’s magical, inexplicable. I can’t understand it myself but I know that without him, I might as well lose the will to live.” Sheila said with a dreamy look on her face.
Just thinking about the man she loved, she couldn’t control the emotions swirling in her heart, making it swell with happiness and contentment, threatening to burst.
Fred gritted his teeth in annoyance. He had come here to convince her to leave behind that old bastard and be with him, not to watch as she praised his enemy in his presence.
” Are you rubbing salt to my wounds by saying that?” Although he tried masking his deep hatred towards David, it still surfaced.
” What man threatens people to stay away from others ? Does he deserve you? Does he deserve your love?” He spat out venomously.
If he couldn’t get her, he might as well taint the perfect picture she had about David in her heart.
He was familiar with Sheila and he knew how much she hated it when someone used dirty tricks to get what he wanted.
‘ let’s see if you will have a peaceful life after she learns about your true character.’ Fred thought Inwardly with an evil smirk.
If he could get her, then he’ll destroy the chance of others having her. That’s how evil and dark his soul was. Whatever he couldn’t have, nobody would have it!
Sheila was taken aback by his words.
‘ David? Threatening people to stay away from her? Why would David do that? He loved her and wouldn’t do anything to hurt her or break her trust in him.
After contemplating, she came up with the conclusion that he must have done it for her own good.
” Whatever David did, irrespective of the matter, I’ll always support him. He will never do anything without a good reason.” She defended her man. She wouldn’t stand by and watch as her man’s name was sullied. She would look past his faults because that’s just how love is, it’s blind, maybe stupid too.
” Are you blind Sheila? Open up and see who David is. Don’t be deceived by his good looks, he’s in disguise.” Fred exaggerated, hoping that she would buy his story. She always did ever since they were young.
” Enough! I won’t allow you to insult my fiance. He might have done wrong things but that doesn’t change how my heart feels for him. Nobody is perfect and as I said, I believe David had his reasons to do that!” Sheila snapped, her face full of irritation.
” Yeah sure, jealousy is a proud reason to do that.” Fred mocked mercilessly. He will taint David’s name as much as he can.
” He has every reason to be jealous and if by doing that, he’ll calm down, then I don’t object.” Sheila said, surprising even herself.
Fred watched her with a big frown on his face. He did expect Sheila would try defending David but not to this extent.
” You changed!” Fred stated the obvious. She was no longer his sweet Sheila waiting for him to marry her. Within a span of the years they got separated, she had changed a lot. Looking at the current Sheila, he was doubtful that he still knew her.
” Everybody changes, even you have changed.” Sheila retorted rendering the Man speechless. Yes, he’ll agree with her on that. He also changed but he changed to be the perfect man in her eyes yet she didn’t see it.
At a faraway corner, David was approaching Sheila but realised that she had company. He could see that they were having a serious conversation. He turned to leave but something caught his attention. The man he identified as Fred asked his woman what was special about him that he didn’t have. His heart was beating erratically while awaiting her answer and then she answered the question flooding his heart with sweetness.
Not wanting to eavesdrop any longer which was of course a bad habit, he turned to leave. He waited for five minutes and Sheila was yet not back. Actually he had allowed them the time to talk so that they could come to a closure.
He was an engaged man so he didn’t want to start competing for the attention and affection of his woman with the so-called ‘ friends.’
Walking towards Vanessa who was mingling with the others peacefully, he signalled for her to move closer which she did.
” I am trying to locate Sheila but I think she has disappeared into thin air. Can you help me look for her?” He used an extremely cunning way to get his woman away from that hopeless prick.
” Okay, I’ll try looking for her.” She excused herself and left the ball party in search of Sheila.
She didn’t need to walk long before seeing her, but wait, something was wrong with the current situation.
Vee could make a silhouette of a woman she instantly identified as Sheila struggling to push a man away. ‘ oh gosh! What to do now?’ she cried inwardly without tears.
Vee gathered her flying emotions and wondered, was this the reason Why Mr Brown asked her to look for Sheila with the excuse that he couldn’t find her? Did he leave after seeing this scene? She hoped not. Vee didn’t want David misunderstanding Sheila.
They just got engaged like an hour ago, she couldn’t let anything threaten their relationship.
I mean like Sheila just found her happiness after dealing with a lot of shit life threw at her. Losing her parents, she was forced to support herself and study.
Over the three years, her friend rarely smiled. She would only smile and that too with an effort when talking about her adoptive parents.
She strode angrily towards the two, she could clearly see Sheila was struggling to free herself but how could she succeed?
She was like a small and feeble woman trying to battle a lion. She stood no chance at all.
” Get the fuck off her you asshole!” Vee said, pushing Fred away from Sheila. Being caught off guard, he was pushed two metres away from her.
” What do you think you are doing?” Vee questioned angrily. You could see imaginary smoke erupting all over her body.
” Stay away, this is between Sheila and me.” Fred replied arrogantly, no remorse could be traced in his voice nor face.
” Between you two? Does she seem like she wants anything to do with you?” Vee was never the one to back off from challenges, especially if someone tried to push her beyond her limits. She sent the guyva piercing glare but Fred remained unbothered.
” I am just trying to take back what is mine. She belongs to me and I don’t plan on sitting by and watching another Man take her away.” Fred argued and Vee could only shake her head in pity.
The man was not only hopeless he was delusional.
” I suggest you try wiping that thick fog of delusion off your little mind. First, Sheila is not an object prone to ownership. She’s a person with feeling and entitled with freedoms and rights. Two, and I want you to keep this in your mind very well. You lost the chance to be with her long ago.” Vee was known to be Savage in her talking, she doesn’t mind offending someone.
Vee cursed Fred inwardly. He was the first one to leave. She was sure that her best friend had feelings for Fred back in the year but the guy practically ceased existing on this planet.
He never for once called or even texted her. After the death of Mr and Mrs Masons, he didn’t even send a condolence.
So how dare he talk about Sheila belonging to him?
Fred felt a tug in his heart and he frowned. Was it really true that he lost her for good?
But that was something he was unwilling to do. She was his so how could he leave her in the hands of another man?
” She just found happiness, don’t be so cruel to rob her of the only good thing she has with your obsession.” Vee said and turned to leave with the still trembling Sheila in her arms.
” Happiness?” Fred scoffed. ” How can an old man like that give her happiness? He’s not qualified to ” Fred spat venomously.
Obsession? Did Vee just say that what he felt for his Sheila was obsession? Of Course not, he was In love with her for years.
Vee turned to look at the familiar yet unfamiliar man infront of her. He was beyond saving, not that she intended to save him in the first place.
” You’ve changed.” She muttered and left him outside letting out a growl of protest..
Vee led Sheila to the ballroom. The party was still in full swing but she was in no mood to enjoy it.
” Are you okay?” Out of care and worry, Vee asked. She was very much aware that such kinds of things were dramatic, all except her Man. She smiled at that thought.
” I am fine.” Sheila replied, her voice weak. Just then, she saw David approaching her slowly. Her heart beat erratically, threatening to leap out of her chest.
He pulled her into a hug, rubbing her back in circular motion while muttering sweet nothings. Magically, it worked and she soon relaxed in her partner’s hands.
