chapter 52

Blinking my eyes open I fished around the bed for the remote so I could turn the tv off. Grabbing my phone, I sighed when I saw it was half 2.
Blaze still wasn’t home, but I noticed Jared had sent me a text 3 hours ago.
‘He’s blind drunk sweetheart! I’ll put him to bed! See you in the morning’
Of course he was. More like fucking that dirty little tramp. Putting my phone away I rolled over and went back to sleep. Mark my words I would confront him tomorrow for the truth.
..
I was up with the birds; morning sickness was kicking my ass. I had opted for tea this morning and was forcing myself to eat some dry toast.
I needed something in my stomach to see if it would settle. I had a FaceTime with Everleigh and made sure my mom knew I was picking her up. Emptying my tea into my flask I made sure I had everything I needed before leaving.
Being back in my uniform felt strange.
I still hadn’t heard from Blaze, but I was hoping he woke up with one stinking hangover. Locking my front door, I unlocked my car before getting in.
I was a little nervous, but this is what I needed. I had to go back to work. Driving along the freeway I answered the call hands free.
“I’m driving”….
“You pissed?”. He asked.
“And why would I be pissed?”. If he wasn’t planning on coming home, then why couldn’t he have just told me that.
“I didn’t mean to get wasted babe! The boys and I got a little carried away”. He sighed.
“I have to go”.
“I’ll come by and see-…”.
I lost service the call disconnecting. Driving the last few miles, I pulled into a parking space outside the hospital. I could do this; this was a part of me. It’s what I loved to do.
Entering the hospital, I inhaled deeply my teeth sinking into my bottom teeth. It felt good to be back.
“Yes”. Ally squealed as she pulled me in for a hug. “I’m so glad you’re back”.
“It’s good to be back”. I smiled. “But I’m taking it easy today, getting myself back in the swing of it”.
“You could stand around and do nothing and I wouldn’t care. I just love that you’re here”. Slipping her arm through mine we walked to my office.
“I won’t stand around and do nothing”. I laughed. “I’ll do some rounds and pick up some new patients”. Reaching my office, I unlocked the door and went inside.
“I wasn’t planning on coming in today, but Cage is still driving me crazy”. As she took a seat on the edge of my desk, I took off my jacket and soothed out my uniform.
“Did he go back to the clubhouse last night?”. I asked.
“Unfortunately, not”. She huffed as her pager went off. “I have to go I’ll see you for coffee in a bit”.
Sitting behind my desk I logged into my computer to check my emails. I had heard that clipboards weren’t a thing anymore and that everything was done through iPads.
I suppose it was better.
Leaving my office I went to the front desk, the lady behind it was already handing me an iPad.
“This will be yours Dr Mendez. All your patients are on there. If you need any help, just give me a shout”. Taking the tablet from her I swiped the screen.
“Thank you”…
I got straight to work. My first patient a little boy with a suspected broken finger.
His mom looked terrified.
“Hi, I’m Ava and what’s your name?”. He was glued to his mom’s side, his thumb stuck in his mouth.
“Travis”. He whispered.
“It’s nice to meet you, Travis. Can I have a look at your fingers?”. I asked crouching down, so I was at his level.
“No”. Shaking his head he moved closer to his mom. “They sore”. He cried.
“I know they are sweetheart but if you let me have a look, I can see what’s wrong with them. Do you want to come and sit on this big chair?”.
His eyes brightened. Taking his thumb from his mouth he gave me a nod.
“Come on them”. As his mom placed him on the chair I inspected his fingers. “They’re very swollen and possibly broken but it’s hard for me to tell”. Feeling around his hand I held his other hand next to it. “I’m going to get him up for an X-ray just to be sure. They’re very swollen and could just be staved. If you leave here just follow the pink line. Tell them Dr Mendez sent you”.
“Thank you”. His mom smiled as she picked him up and into her arms.
“I’ll see you soon Travis”.
….
So much for taking it easy. I had just finished my first surgery in years. Thrown right into the deep end with a hernia repair.
My feet were killing me. Disposing of my scrubs I cleaned myself up ready to go for coffee. My stomach had settled, and I needed caffeine.
“Hot date for you at the desk”. Ally winked. “He in the doghouse because he’s got you coffee”.
“No”. I wish he wasn’t here. I couldn’t hide when I was pissed off. It was written all over my face. “I’ll see you soon”.
“Not for another 12 hours” she groaned. “I’m in surgery most of the day”.
“Good luck with that”. Walking towards the front desk I chewed my bottom lip at the sight of him. He still made my knees weak.
“I don’t have much time”. Taking the coffee, he was offering I took a sip.
“Just making sure you’re alright darling”.
“I’m fine”. Opening the door to my office I took a seat behind my desk.
“Look I’m sorry I didn’t come home. I didn’t mean to drink that much I just-…”
“Got carried away yeah you said”. I focused on the coffee in my hand.
“The fucks wrong with you?”. He snapped.
“Did you cheat on me?”. My eyes connected with his. His eyes darkened, his teeth clenched.
“Are you fucking kidding me?”. He growled. “Why the fuck would I cheat on the best thing I’ve got”.
“So, you didn’t?”.
“Of course I fucking didn’t. The fuck do you take me for?”.
I physically relaxed. I knew he hadn’t, and he wouldn’t, but I needed to hear him say it.
“Someone said something at the clubhouse last night and instead of beating her ass I went home”.
“Who was it?”. I didn’t miss the panic flash in his eyes.
“I don’t know Blaze. Tall girl, legs to die for, pretty face”.
“Jamie?”. He asked.
“Oh, so there’s a Jamie?”.
“She’s a dancer at the club babe nothing else. What did she say to you?”
“Just tell me the truth Blaze”. It was better he tells me now before I found out later.
“She gave me a dance but-….”
It wasn’t a slap I gave him this time. It was a full forced punch with enough force to burst his nose.
“You need to leave”. I was physically shaking but for once it was with anger.
“Babe, I didn’t cheat on you” Wiping the blood from his nose he glared at me.
“No, you just let some whore grind on your dick”. “Please leave, just go I can’t be near you right now”.
“I didn’t-…”
“Get out”. Pushing against his chest I didn’t stop until he left. Locking my door, I squeezed my eyes tight. The trust was broken, he fucked it up once again.
He let her dance for him, dance on him. Was it just a dance or was there more to it? Grabbing the coffee from my desk I lifted my tablet and went back to work.
Blaze could wait until I was finished, and I would get the truth one way or another.
