“Yes.”
Credence’s eyes dimmed. “This is just a small issue, I’ll take care of it. Don’t worry about it. You should get some rest after dinner. I’ll keep an eye on you. When you’ve rested up, we’ll head over to Lily’s house and help with her funeral.”
Dorothy couldn’t understand why Jeremy has to use Melanie to kill Credence. Jeremy was, after all, her brother, they were blood-related.
Her own brother wanted to kill the man she loved. This was absurd.
For a moment, Dorothy felt guilty as she took a few mouthfuls of soup. She then raised her head and looked at the man sitting in front of her, eating quietly. She whispered, “Credence, I was a little agitated just now… I’m sorry.”
He turned around and met her sparkling eyes. Then, he moved closer and licked a drop of soup that was on her lips. He smiled affectionately. “It’s okay. You’re my wife. I chose you, you never have to apologize.”
Fifteen minutes later, they had finished their lunch.
After Dorothy had finished her meal, she laid down on the bed to rest. Credence walked into the bathroom with a phone in his hand. He silently closed the door and waited for Benjamin’s call.
Sure enough, it didn’t take long for Benjamin to call back.
Credence answered the phone, he heard the anger in Benjamin’s voice. “Mr. Scott, it’s just as you expected, Lily’s father has been contacting Melanie throughout the entire journey.”
“After I’ve interrogated him, he knelt down and begged for mercy. He said he had no choice. Melanie is holding his mother hostage and has threatened to kill her if he didn’t do as she said.”
“Sir, Melanie is too dangerous of a threat to be ignored. We can’t allow her to escape. If you do, it would only bring more danger towards Mrs. Scott.”
In all his years of service, Benjamin had always been calm and reserved. He had never been as bold as he was right now. He sounded quite reckless.
Credence knew that Benjamin’s urging was for Dorothy’s safety, so he didn’t argue. He stared at the dazzling sunlight outside the window and said in a deep voice, “Your task is to send Lily’s parents and her body home. I’ll arrange everything else myself.”
After ending the call, he walked out of the bathroom and sat on the edge of the bed. He waited for Dorothy to wake up. It was already 4:30 p. m.
After packing up, he held on to Dorothy’s hand and left the hotel. He personally drove the car to Lily’s home.
Although it was only a small road, it was smooth and well maintained. The journey over didn’t cause Dorothy too much discomfort.
Apart from the sparsely populated area, the scenery was still relatively interesting, and Dorothy felt a little better taking in the trees and open fields.
Credence kept taking the long way to their destination. He would even drive in circles from time to time. Dorothy didn’t have a good sense of direction, so she didn’t notice anything strange about his driving.
But, when he circled about again for the third time, she spotted a familiar-looking electric pole with a red plastic bag hanging on it being blown by the wind. Dorothy asked, “Credence, I’ve seen that red plastic bag three times now. Can you tell me what you are doing?”
Credence gripped the steering wheel tighter. His eyes were cold, but his voice was calm. “Sweetheart, we might have been followed. It’s not a big deal, just sit tight. With me here, no one will hurt you.”
“Is Melanie here?”
Dorothy gulped. She quietly clenched her seat belt with both her hands. A vague sense of foreboding welled up in her heart.
It seemed that their trip to Kowloon City was quite a dangerous one.
However, with Credence beside her, she wasn’t afraid of anything!
As just an ordinary woman, she was still very nervous in the face of unpredictable danger. She completely tensed up from the anxiety. Her breathing quickened, and her heart started beating faster, which made her very uncomfortable.
She wanted to puke, but her impulse prevented her from doing so.
Credence could sense her anxiety, controlling the steering wheel with one hand, he took out something small from his pocket with the other. He handed it to her. “Do you remember this?”
Dorothy was baffled, but she accepted it and looked at it carefully.
Wasn’t this her student identity card that she had left in the bathroom when she was sixteen years old?
What? Did he take it away?
She gently stroked the small photo of her younger self. Dorothy couldn’t help but ask, “Why do you have this?”
“Back then, after I took you away from the hands of those fools, your student card was stuck on one of my buttons. It fell off, but I picked it up and was about to give it back to you. Unexpectedly, Benjamin had taken you to the hospital. I put the student card back in my pocket and went back to the private room to entertain my customers. So many things happened after, I had completely forgotten about it. A few days ago, Benjamin took it out and gave it to me!”
So it turns out, ever since they met for the first time when he saved her, he had hidden her student card away all this time.
Then what happened in the four years after that? What has changed with their relationship?
When she loved him deeply, he retreated from her as though she was a maggot.
But when she was desperate and wanted to give up on him, he weaved a thick and dense net around her with his intimate love and trapped her. She couldn’t move, and she had lost the determination to stop loving him.
As Dorothy thought of their past grudges, her eyes slowly turned red. “Credence, you obviously care about me. But why? Why did you make us miss out on so many years of our relationship?”
Listening to her tearful cries, Credence couldn’t help but tighten his grip on the steering wheel. He lowered his eyes and smiled with an extremely gentle smile, it was suffocating to Dorothy.
He said, “Honey, you were only 16 at that time, you were in high school. You had your head down and ran away from the bar. You didn’t even notice the man you knocked into and almost fell over. The man, who was a gentleman, reached out to support you and touched your hands. At that moment, the man suddenly had an impulse, but he thought it was ridiculous. As a mature and successful person, he couldn’t have desires for a high school student. It was ridiculous.”
“Honey, I’m sure you’ve guessed it. I’m that man!”
“During those four years of our marriage, on one hand, I felt that only your body could satiate my desires; on the other hand, I couldn’t believe that I was sexually attracted by you, a sixteen-year-old girl. I wasn’t willing to admit that I was perverted and shameless, so I did a lot of things to hurt you. I’m sorry!”
If something was wrong, then it was wrong. No matter how one tried to cover it up, no matter how dignified they were, they would never be able to cover up their dirty deeds.
So, this time, by taking advantage of the two of them being alone in Kowloon City together, Credence finally told Dorothy about his deepest secrets.
He was worried that if he missed this opportunity, he would never have the chance to say it again.
Melanie wasn’t a simple woman to deal with. Besides, now that she was working together with Jeremy, it was even more difficult.
He did not want to have any regrets when it came to Dorothy!
It did not matter if she hated him or complained about him, he would come clean about everything. He didn’t want to leave anything out.
No one could start a brand new life if they didn’t face their own unpleasant truths.
And his new life would begin with Dorothy’s forgiveness!
Dorothy didn’t expect to hear the truth from him. She felt as though her heart was being squeezed by a massive hand, it was so painful she couldn’t breathe.
She turned her head and glared at him, her eyes red with anger. “Credence, you b*stard, you b*stard!”
“Yes, I am a b*stard, I am a terrible b*stard!”
He looked back at her and slowly smiled. His eyes were dark and deep. “Honey, I am telling you this because I want to be free from it. Also, I love you. When you were 16 years old, I fell in love with you. I loved you when you were just a student!”
Dorothy almost couldn’t believe her ears, her body slammed back on the seat.
Everything hurt, her brain, her heart, every cell in her body was in great pain.
Tears flowed down her eyes, and she fell silent. Her tears were hot and heart-wrenchingly painful.
She looked at the extremely gentle man beside him, cried and sneered. “Credence, I hate you. I’ll never forgive you, never!”
“Baby, don’t cry. I’m sorry, I am so sorry!”
Credence grabbed onto her arm, he was breathing loudly. He softly whispered three words into her ear, “I love you!”
Before Dorothy came to her senses, he quickly turned the car around and jammed on the brakes. He then carefully held on to her from the driver’s seat. He then quickly opened the door and looked back along the road. He reversed the car while holding a pistol in his hand. He shouted, “Hurry up, drive away now!”
He didn’t manage to get rid of Melanie. Instead, he had lost his own men. F*ck!
Melanie had arrived!
