Right after Dorothy asked that question, she realized that she was prying into Credence and Melanie’s affairs. She looked away and pretended as though she hadn’t said anything.
He stared at her. He couldn’t help but raise his eyes. “I have to go against her in order to keep you safe.”
He didn’t have time to play this tiresome game of cat-and-mouse with Melanie. Killing her in one go was the best option for everyone.
All these years, Melanie had taken so many lives, especially his squadmates back in the army. So many of them died at Melanie’s hands, and their bodies were abandoned or buried in the vast forest, where they could never return to their homeland.
He had no qualms about killing Melanie. This would be taking vengeance for his fallen comrades.
Dorothy didn’t know this. She turned their attention back to herself. She was flustered and asked, “Do you think that she would come after me?”
“I don’t just think, I know she will.”
Credence stared at Dorothy’s unperturbed face. He grabbed her slender hand and pressed it tightly against his warm, firm chest. He spoke in a deep and husky voice, “Melanie is cruel and merciless. She will do anything to get what she wants.”
Deep down in his heart, he couldn’t bear to gamble with Dorothy’s life. So he would risk his own, just so everyone would be happy.
Dorothy wasn’t stupid. She immediately understood Credence’s intentions. A warm feeling flowed through her heart, and she didn’t pull her hand back. She firmly looked at him spoke in a gentle tone. “You deliberately published those photos and videos just so to confuse and enrage Melanie, didn’t you?”
“That’s right.” Credence nodded.
Seeing how he didn’t deny it, Dorothy immediately realized that her suspicions were correct.
Not only did he seek out a woman who looked like her to take those photos and videos, but he also planned to take advantage of the hospital building as the place to end Melanie’s life.
She had never seen him cook up such a grand plan to take out a woman. It was obvious that Melanie was extremely dangerous.
Just how high were his chances of success, going against such a ferocious woman?
From the look on his face, Dorothy could see that Melanie wasn’t someone who was easy to deal with. On top of that, she vaguely overheard that Melanie was cooperating with someone else, which meant that this had become a bigger issue.
“Melanie seems powerful. You should be more careful.”
Having said that, she felt that she was being a softie again. She had been hurt so badly by him, yet she still cared for him. “Credence, don’t think too much. I don’t care about you, I was only saying that on behalf of Belle. Belle really misses you. If you have time, go be with her.”
She had to admit, not only was his presence improving Belle’s mood day by day, it even eased her condition.
He was her father, and she was his daughter. Dorothy shouldn’t stop them from being exactly that.
As long as Belle could completely recover from her condition, she figured she could try to forget about him and all the hurt Credence had caused her over the years.
Credence closed his eyes and opened them again. He whispered. “Is Belle the only one that misses me, what about you?”
Did it matter whether she missed him or not?
Dorothy frowned and got angry. She pulled her hand back and placed it under the quilt. She had suddenly lost all interest in talking to him.
Her indifferent attitude caused Credence to choke up. He really wanted to smoke a cigarette to ease his mood, but she was pregnant, and second-hand smoke was harmful. He stood up and looked at her. “Honey, you can try to avoid me, but you can’t deny the fact that you still love me.”
He was right that she really couldn’t forget about him.
Ever since he rescued her when she was sixteen, he was like a tenacious seed that took root in the deepest part of her heart and sprouted there. He had grown into a towering tree that no one could replace.
When Dorothy came back to her senses, she realized that no one was there. She didn’t even know when Credence had left.
She slowly turned her eyes to the window. She was at a loss.
Germaine held Belle’s hand and walked in. When she noticed Dorothy’s dazed expression, she raised her eyebrows and asked, “Dory, who was that just now?”
“Credence. He just left.”
Belle skipped over to Dorothy’s side and bandaged her hands. When she heard the name “Credence”, she quickly looked up and said, “Mommy, did Daddy really come to see us? Why didn’t you call me? I haven’t seen Daddy for so many days. I miss him.”
Dorothy touched her daughter’s little head and calmly explained. “He has something to attend to. He will come to see you when he is done.”
Belle was a little confused, but Germaine understood. It had to be because Dory and Credence weren’t on good terms right now.
She was unsure of what happened between them, but there could only be two possibilities.
First, Credence had almost caused her to have a miscarriage. Other than that, it was Melanie.
For some strange reason, Credence’s ex-girlfriend returned while Dory was pregnant. She did not know what was going on in Credence’s mind.
Germaine sneered internally. She had bought some food for Dorothy and placed it on the bedside table. She decided to change the subject. “Dory, have you seen Juelz? He used to be with you every day around this time. Where has he disappeared to?”
“I didn’t see him.” Dorothy shook her head. “Juelz isn’t in the hospital, he might be back at the company.”
“But his assistant, Sontha, just called me. He asked me if I knew where he was.” Germaine narrowed her eyes and was confused. “Sh*t, since he’s not here, and if he’s not at the company, where else could he have gone?”
“I am not sure.”
Dorothy was still dazed when she answered Germaine’s question. When she caught the scent of the food, her stomach growled. She immediately got out of bed and went to the bathroom to wash her face and brush her teeth. Soon, she forgot about Juelz’s disappearance.
….
Credence was driving a low-key black luxury car. He had just left the hospital when two large Land Rovers followed him. With a loud screech, they both stopped one on the left and the other on the right. They blocked Credence’s path. There was no way out.
