Dorothy was putting on her shoes in the ward. Her feet had gotten swollen because of her pregnancy. This made it quite hard for her to wear shoes.
Juelz was watching from the side. He really wanted to just pick her up and carry her to the ultrasound room. It would’ve been much faster that way.
Dorothy had only managed to put on a single shoe after struggling for two to three minutes. Juelz couldn’t wait any longer. He rushed over and spread his arms, as though he wanted to hold her in his arms.
As he held her up, he realized that Dorothy had lost a lot of weight in the past 10 days since her operation. She was so light.
He looked at her pale face, and Juelz felt his throat tighten. “Dory, this is all my fault. I’ve been so useless, that’s why you’ve suffered so much.”
At that moment, even if he’d never earn her love, he’d be happy fulfilling her wishes so that she would be happy.
“Juelz, how could you blame yourself for that?”
The pain in her stomach made Dorothy wince. She pressed on her slightly raised abdomen, with a look of pain in her eyes. “It must be because I wanted too much. The Gods are tired of my desires and are punishing me.”
“Juelz, I really don’t want to mull about things right now. I’ve already figured it all out. No matter how hard I try to get what I want, if it doesn’t belong to me, then it will never be mine. So, now all I can hope for is that the baby in my womb will be alright, the same goes for Belle. I won’t ask for anything else anymore.”
“If I had known that falling down would have such a big impact on my child, I wouldn’t have argued with Credence. I wouldn’t care if he spends the rest of his nights with Melanie, I would’ve listened to him. Whatever he says is the truth, and I’d do whatever he wants me to!”
“Juelz, I feel so much regret. I really regret all I’ve done. But it’s too late now, it’s too late to say anything.”
Dorothy sighed, tears silently rolled down from the corners of her eyes.
Juelz could feel her tears falling onto his heart. It burned him so badly he shuddered in the shared pain.
He held back the pain, tightly held Dorothy in his arms, and rushed towards the ultrasound room. He comforted her with his gentle voice. “Dory, don’t worry. The baby will be alright, Belle will be fine, too.”
…
Credence was standing a few meters away from the ward. He watched as Juelz rushed off in the opposite direction with Dorothy in his arms. He looked gravely worried.
He ran so fast that the hem of his suit fluttered about haphazardly. It was blown to the side of his waist and made a rustling sound.
Marvin saw this as well. He turned and saw Credence’s usually calm face, harden. A sharp flash of anger burst from the depths of his eyes. It was enough to make people shudder.
Marvin knew that Credence saw and heard everything. He released a quiet sigh. Raising his hand, he gave Credence a gentle pat on the shoulder. “Credence, from my experience, sometimes, what we see or hear may not be the whole truth. Since we’re here, we should tell Dorothy the truth. She isn’t an unreasonable person. I’m sure she’d understand if we explain things clearly to her.”
“Marvin, didn’t you hear her? She said she regretted it, she regretted falling in love with me. Isn’t that what she meant?”
Credence was stuck in place. Those last two sentences from Dorothy continued to echo in his mind. To be more precise, he could only hear those two sentences. His face turned extremely dark, as dark as ink. His heart felt like it had sunk into a bottomless abyss. The only thing that could be seen was his long, narrow eyes, which were slowly turning red.
Her voice was shallow, and she uttered every word very slowly. She would pause after every sentence to gasp for air. She was in immense pain.
So, everything Boden had said was true?
The baby in Dorothy’s belly was either going to be aborted or end up deformed?
How could things turn out like this?
He thought that before Melanie would strike, he would send Belle and her away for their safety. This would allow him to go all out against Melanie so that he could kill that sinister, cunning, and combative woman as soon as possible.
But why, why did Dorothy have to carry all the pain in the end?
Ever since he confessed his true feelings for her, he never wanted her to suffer anymore. He did not want this at all.
Credence moved his lips, but no words came out. His mouth tasted bitter as if bottles of medicine were jammed into his throat, and his heart was bleeding profusely.
Marvin frowned. He knew that Credence was already upset from discovering his father’s dark secret. Now, after hearing Dorothy’s regrets, his heart was hurt even more. He couldn’t help but feel sad, he couldn’t help but overthink things.
He looked at Credence and spoke as calmly as he could. “Credence, you know Dorothy better than I do. She’s not the type to simply abandon others, especially when it comes to her feelings for you. She was able to survive so many hardships in the past, even now. Right now, she’s going for a test to make sure that her child is safe. During such a critical moment, I think that she’d much prefer your company than Juelz’s, she’d feel more at ease.”
When it came to things like this, Marvin was usually quiet. He rarely spoke so openly.
When he did though, his words would make a lot of sense. This was because he had analyzed the situation rationally. There was no room for nonsense.
That was the biggest difference between him and Jonathan.
“Let’s go.” Credence spoke in a hoarse voice and began to move.
They moved fast. They spotted a nurse who was passing by and got directions to the ultrasound room and dashed towards it.
They weren’t supposed to be on duty, but under Juelz’s insistence, the best and most famous doctors had gathered in the room. Dorothy was the only patient there. Juelz was beside her and didn’t dare to move away.
As Dorothy laid on the bed for her examination, she looked at all the attending doctors. They were all women, and she realized that this was Juelz’s arrangement. She smiled gratefully and said, “Thank you, you must have been very busy.”
“Dory. As long as you get better, any amount of hard work will be worth it.”
Juelz had meant that from the bottom of his heart. His words would make other people’s hearts skip a beat.
Dorothy was speechless. Her eyebrows twitched as she looked at Juelz. “I’m going to have a check-up now. Don’t you think you should leave?”
Juelz came to his senses, but he really didn’t want to leave her. He raised his head and asked the lead doctor, “No one will be able to take care of Dory here, is it okay if I stay?”
“Are you the patient’s husband?”
Juelz shook his head. “No, I’m not.”
“Her boyfriend?”
“Not that either.”
The old doctor frowned. “If you are neither her relative or someone close to her, you’ll only make the patient uncomfortable. Who is going to take responsibility if something goes wrong?”
Couldn’t he see how serious the situation was? Yet he still insisted on flirting with this woman? So what if he was one of the bosses of the hospital!
The lead doctor left Juelz speechless. He quickly stood up and stepped away. As he moved towards the exit, he continued to comfort Dorothy. “Dory, these are the best doctors in the hospital. You can relax, everything will be fine.”
“Okay, I know.” Dorothy nodded.
As Juelz stepped through the door and turned to close it he felt a fierce wind spiraling towards him. With a loud bang, a man’s iron-hard fist landed heavily on his back!
