Credence shouted, “Dorothy, no!”
As he watched Dorothy’s body plummet, Credence’s eyes turned bloodshot, and his roar was filled with pain.
He swept towards the window, and slashed at Gabe, who could only watch him in terror.
Just like how he would cut a watermelon, he pierced Gabe’s chest with the machete, burying it almost up the its hilt.
Blood gushed out and spattered over Credence’s trousers.
Credence kicked Gabe away and jumped out of the window almost reflexively. All he wanted was to grab hold of Dorothy’s hand and pull her back.
She was the only woman who had truly loved him, and if he lost her, his world would forever be trapped in darkness. He would lose the will to live.
This silly woman had stayed with him for four years, and he’d never even spared her a second of his life. Yet she’d never complained or hated him, and continued to give him her heart.
They were husband and wife, and they had to face everything together.
If she was alive, then he would be too. If she died, then he wouldn’t be able to live.
Credence tried to speed himself up. Thanks to the moonlight, he saw that he was getting closer to Dorothy, and he reached out to grab her wrist. He pulled her towards him and held her close to his chest as they plummeted towards the ocean. He never wanted to let her go ever.
In this moment, with her in his arms, he felt like he had the whole world.
“Credence, why didn’t you listen to me? Why’d you jump? What’s going to happen to Belle?”
Dorothy clenched a fist and pounded on his chest. Her trembling voice was tearful, yet it also had an unconcealed trade of joy.
She’d loved him to the bone, and had also been hurt to her core. She thought that she’d never be able to receive his love in return, but when he’d jumped after her without hesitation…
Dorothy finally realised that he loved her as well. Credence had truly allowed her into his heart, and he was willing to forgo his life for her.
The wind whistled in her ears, and it was bitingly cold. However, Dorothy couldn’t feel it, and she wasn’t even afraid.
She had Credence by her side, and even if they ended up in hell, her heart would still be filled with warmth.
Credence lowered his head and pressed his lips against hers. His deep voice was gentle as he said, “What would you do if I hadn’t jumped?”
The waves crashed and mist sprayed over them. However, Dorothy only felt warmth.
Credence had always been a cold and distant man. She hadn’t expected him to say such sweet nothings.
A final wave crashed over them as they fell into the ocean.
Credence held Dorothy tightly in his arms and was protected from being swept against the jagged rocks. Suddenly, she heard Credence let out a dull groan and quickly looked up at him. “Credence, what’s wrong?”
“I’m fine!”
Credence held Dorothy tightly in his arms. He protected her from being crashed against the rocks and allowed himself to bear the brunt of the force.
He could almost hear the sound of bones breaking as his back crashed against the rocks, but he couldn’t feel any pain. In fact, this was the happiest moment of his life.
That was because he had never truly protected Dorothy with his entire body and heart before.
When Credence thought that he was going to pass out, he took a deep breath and suppressed the overwhelming dizziness. He smiled gently at Dorothy and said, “Dorothy, tell me about when you were a child. And when did you fall in love with me? I want to know more about you.”
With his status and power, there was no way that there’d be any connection between himself and the adopted daughter of the Fisher family.
He’d only met Dorothy once at Rosalie’s eighteenth birthday party, but it was more than enough for him to detect the love and admiration in her eyes.
Therefore, he’d always wondered why Dorothy had seemed so deeply in love with him when she didn’t even know what we was like. He’d even found it rather laughable.
If he wasn’t the president of Scott Group, and if he didn’t have a handsome appearance, would she still have put on such an expression of love and admiration?
He had met many woman who wanted to pounce on men just because of their god looks.
Soon, after his father’s intervention, she became his legal wife. She’d fulfilled her duties as his wife, and had done her best to take care of him.
However, he firmly believed that Dorothy was a scheming woman. Therefore, in their four-year marriage, he constantly humiliated and abused her mentally until she completely collapsed in despair.
When she disappeared from his world, that was when he realised that she’d already become rooted in his heart. He’d just pretended not to know, like an idiot.
Dorothy’s heart filled with warmth when she heard Credence ask to get to know her better under such circumstances.
He’d never spoken to her like this before. Before this, the only woman that he would possibly want to know more about was Rosalie.
But now, he’d willingly jumped into the ocean with her, and he’d become her pillar amidst the danger. He calmed her racing heart.
Dorothy looked at Credence and smiled gently. “I don’t think there’s anything much to say about my past. I spent most of my childhood studying, doing chores and getting scolded. As for when I fell in love with you…”
“Credence, I met you when I was sixteen, at a time when I was at my lowest. You were the one who saved me from certain death.”
“Back then, I was tricked by my foster parents to a private room in a club. There were about five or six middle-aged men with beer bellies, and they were all clients of my foster father’s. He’d given me as a gift to them in order to reap more benefits from them.”
“After I got away and hid in the bathroom, I broke down in tears. You were the one who descended from the heavens and got me out of there. You brought me to the hospital to attend to my injuries.”
“It was probably nothing to you, but it was the only warmth and light in my dark life.”
“Credence, do you know how normal it is for a girl who grew up in an environment filled with abuse and humiliation to fall for a handsome saviour?”
For someone who’d wandered around in the dark for too long, it was only natural for them to want to capture whatever light they could.
He was the light of her life, so it was normal for her to fall in love with him.
Dorothy rambled on before she realised that Credence hadn’t responded. She couldn’t help saying, “Why haven’t you responded even though I’ve said so much?”
However, the only reply she received was the whistling of the sea breeze.
The surging waves crashed over them again, and this time, Dorothy could smell blood. She saw blood gushing from Credence’s mouth, and she blinked her tears away as she suppressed her heartache.
“Credence, what, what happened to you?”
