Mia’s POV
The man looked utterly embarrassed as if he had expected Lorenzo to laugh along with him and honestly I had expected the same as well since he never seems to abandon an opportunity to put me down most of the time.
But now it was almost as if he was defending me and I felt my heart flutter a little bit because it felt like the first time in my entire life that anyone was truly doing that, my twin and mother aside.
The man apologized and then crept into the crowd and buried himself with them with utter shame.
Without thinking about it too much, I turned around and thanked Lorenzo for doing that for me.
“What makes you think that I did that for you?” He asked me with a dismissive voice and instantly, the smile on my face evaporated.
Will it have been so difficult for him to simply say the normal reply instead of being rude?
His eyes were always darting around as if he was looking for something and then finally, they seem to go when a waiter was passing us by, but then the waiter was carrying an empty tray and I was wondering what he was after.
Almost immediately, I noticed that there was a little white slip on the tray.
I thought that he was about to pull his hand away from my grip and instinctively held it tighter for some reason. He regarded me with an unreadable look right before he took the note with his other hand.
For only a millisecond, he exchanged a look with the waiter and then after that, he casually unfolded the letter and scanned through it.
My curiosity got the best of me and I instinctively wanted to peek at what he was reading, he must have noticed that I was breathing over his shoulder almost standing up to my tiptoes on the heels and thankfully not falling down to my face, because of the support of his firm bodyI had next to me.
It only took a few seconds for my eyes to roll down the note and then I realized why he had not been bothered that I was trying to take a look at it. It looked like it had been written by a five year old that was socially deprived for most of their life and suddenly given the chance to write after having a hand injury.
All in all, it was completely ineligible to me but it looked like my fake significant other didn’t have that problem. He seemed to glow with anticipation as he read through the note despite the mangled up writing that sometimes did not even stay within the barrier of the lines.
He grunted and shoved the note into his pocket after crushing it in his fingers. He looked a little bit annoyed and the vein in his head seemed to be throbbing, and even though the anger was not directed at me, I felt a little scared seeing him like that, but I still wasn’t able to let go of his arm.
He turned to me and said, “let go…”
“Huh?” My shock had catapulted to my brain so fast that that was the only reasonable syllable that was spelt out for my lips in reaction to that command.
“I thought that the plan is that you will stay with me throughout the night.” I pointed out.
“There are some adjustments that have been made in the ‘plan’, apparently I am needed somewhere…” he turned to walk away but I held his arm back.
I didn’t want to be left alone. What if something happens to me before he returns?
“Then you can just take me with you…” I suggested.
He looked at me from head to toe and instead of laughing like I was expecting him to, I noticed that there was serious concentration in his eyes as if he was actually contemplating bringing me along, but then it was gone as quickly as it came and he scoffed at my request.
“I can’t take you to a place like that.@
“Why ?” I found myself asking.
“Because, you’ll ve eaten alive there.”
“Then will you be able to come back safely?” The question literally jumped out of my mouth without second thoughts and that’s when I realized what I had just asked. My cheeks heated up in embarrassment, I was beginning to spit out nonsense without putting much thought into it.
Now he was going to think that I was worried about him and tease me about it too.
“Darling, I have survived in worse situations than this, compared to some other experiences this is practically a walk in the park, so save your worry. I’ll be fine,”
I felt an involuntary shiver run across my body when he called me ‘darling’, but then I had to remind my silly self once again that it was just because he was acting right now and nothing more.
If we were somewhere private right now, he definitely wouldn’t have referred to me as that.
After saying all of this, I felt that it would be totally ridiculous to keep holding on to him, so I slowly and carefully let go of his arm. I felt as if I was cutting off what in that process.
“My men are everywhere, you don’t have to worry about anything happening to you, they are trusted and will protect you with their lives,”
I didn’t know if I was comfortable about them protecting me with their lives but at least I felt a little bit safer.
“Okay then, but what do I do until you come back?”
I didn’t want to walk into a situation that would end up embarrassing him.
“Just keep a low profile, and don’t accept a drink from anyone. I’ll be back before you know it.”
