While Wendy was busying herself in the afternoon, she suddenly received a call from Daisy.
Daisy told her that she was waiting for her at the campus gates, and that she wanted to have a chat with her.
When Wendy came out to meet her, Daisy got out of the car and flashed her a grin.
One look at the camel-coloured overcoat she was wearing, she stopped dead in her tracks.
Wasn’t this the overcoat that was sold out in the female-clothing store they went to that day?
Apparently it wasn’t a gift for herself after all, but for his… sister-in-law.
She remembered distinctly that one of the employees there told her that the piece of clothing had been sold off to a certain Mr. Charles as a gift for his love.
“‘Love’, huh,” she scoffed on the inside.
The ability of some men to flatter women left and right like that was truly commendable.
The reason he gave her for moving out was because he wanted to avoid Daisy.
She felt stupid for believing in him.
Who knew that
by doing so, this would make it even easier for him to slip out from her grasp to go to her side?
Huh.
Daisy started walking towards her.
No matter how depressed she felt, she shouldn’t act up at a time like this. After all, it wasn’t the person who received the gift who was at fault.
After calming her nerves, she started, “Anything important you have to tell me, Daisy? You came all this way and at this hour too,”
Daisy pursed her lips. “I just thought you’d want to spend time with Henson after getting off work, so since I didn’t want him nagging at me for being a busybody, I thought this would a better time to meet up with you.
“About the other day, Wendy, I admit that I was the one who overthought things. It was wrong of me for not going over my plans with you beforehand just because I thought it’d make for a nice surprise for the two of you. I promise never to do something so hasty next time,” Daisy apologised then
extended her hand forward to grab hold of Wendy’s hands. “Can you forgive me?” she pleaded.
“I hope you’re not here just for that, Daisy. If you are, then you should take the incident off your chest already. I acknowledge your good intentions that day, but as for why I didn’t go along with your plan was because I felt that it wouldn’t be nice of me to lie to him,” Wendy explained.
Daisy nodded in response. “Alright, let’s forget about it then. To be honest, the real reason I came today was because… I wanted to talk to you about something. It’s been weighing on my mind for a while now and I feel so suffocated because of it,” she lamented.
Wendy frowned. Did she come all this way to tell her about her past with Henson?
She couldn’t see through this woman’s intentions at all. Daisy definitely knew that she was his girlfriend, and yet she dared to put on the clothes he bought for her for their meeting?
How was that appropriate in the slightest?!
Wendy would never do such a thing.
Also, if that b*stard Henson still couldn’t get over her, why don’t they just elope already? Why were they still leading her and Mason on as if they were fools?
Wendy bit her lip immediately after. “I’m afraid I’m not the sister figure you’re looking for, Daisy. I’m not a reasonable woman, after all,” she scoffed.
“But according to Henson, you’re a well-informed, kind, and gentle person. I have a feeling I can trust you more than I can trust anyone else for what I’m about to tell you,” Daisy said.
“I’ll have you know I’m not the angel he sees me as, so don’t trust his words so much. After all, a man’s words aren’t as concrete as you might think,” Wendy sneered.
“Was it wrong of me to come visit you, Wendy? Are you upset at me, perchance?” Daisy asked sheepishly.
Wendy shut her eyes and exhaled. “Of course not. It’s just that I’m a bit busy now, is all. If you don’t have anything else to say, I’ll be heading back now,” Wendy announced and
nodded towards her. She then spun around, fully ready to head back to campus, until
she heard Daisy announce in a clear voice with her head lowered, “I’m pregnant, Wendy,”
Wendy stopped dead in her tracks, her mind running at overdrive.
She was… pregnant?!
So, the reason why Daisy went through all that trouble to come and break the news to her… was because she was carrying Henson’s child?
The thought of it made her heart constrict as she clenched her fists tighter.
No, Henson couldn’t have possibly done this. She was his sister-in-law.
He might’ve bought her expensive clothes, but even if he still harboured feelings towards Daisy, he wasn’t one to hurt his brother like that.
She was absolutely sure of it.
She then spun around and looked at Daisy. “Congratulations, Daisy,” she said.
“I don’t feel happy about at all, even though I know this is something worth celebrating. This child is the reason me and Mason got into a huge fight, after all. This was the first time we fought since we got married too,” Daisy explained and let out a heavy sigh.
“Isn’t your pregnancy something to be happy about though? Why’d you two get into a fight over it then?” Wendy asked.
“To be honest… we didn’t really fight over it. It was me who fooled around with Mason, after all,” she explained, frustrated. “I… was the one who didn’t want to give birth to this child, while Mason insisted that I did,”
“I’m sure you have your own reasons too,” Wendy reasoned.
“I’m sure you’re also aware of how things are in this family. Mason’s crippled so he can’t move on his own, which is why I don’t think it’s a good thing for us to have children together,” Daisy explained.
“Who would’ve thought that that would be a reason to abort a child in a family like that?” Wendy thought to herself
and said eventually, “But don’t you two have a lot of servants at home? The two of you can rest well knowing that they can take care of the baby for you, no?”
“I feel that I should be responsible for nurturing my own child since I was the one who gave birth to them, but if I were to devote my time into raising my child, I fear I won’t have time for Mason anymore. I really don’t wish for people to laugh at my child for having a cripple as a father,” Daisy lamented.
“People who mock others most likely don’t have a good upbringing themselves. Plus, who’d be so cruel? Why are you so afraid of what they think?” Wendy reasoned.
“I’m not one to care about people like that, but I’m just afraid that my child would,” Daisy said and shook her head. “I’m scared that my child will look at Mason and feel inadequate. And when the time comes, Mason will also be devastated when he finds out. I just don’t want this scene to play out at all costs,”
“So, this was the true reason behind why the both of you fought?” Wendy asked.
Daisy lowered her eyes at that. “I didn’t voice my concerns to him. I didn’t want him to know that these were weighing on my mind, because I knew it’d upset him. After all, I married him for him. I don’t give a sh*t about how his legs are.
“On the other hand, he just assumed that the reason I didn’t want the child was because I still couldn’t get over my past relationship. So, that was the real reason we fought,” Daisy ranted.
“I’m so, so sorry about everything that’s happened to you, Daisy, but I’m afraid I’m at a loss of what to do as well. After all, this is a matter within your own family, so I’m just another outsider in all of this,” Wendy said apologetically.
“I know that,” Daisy sighed. “I feel like I’m slowly going mad from how conflicted I feel about this right now now that I’ve lost another person to help me with this. And here I thought I could persuade Henson to put a few words in for me to Mason. But after giving it some thought, I reckoned Henson would definitely still side with his brother, so that’s why I couldn’t bring myself to tell him the truth.
‘Let me tell you, Wendy, I’ve never felt this conflicted in my life until now, even when I was at my worst. Henson always brings up how smart you are, so… I’d like to know what you’d do if YOU were in my shoes,”
