Henson didn’t have anything else to add and merely followed her downstairs.
After noticing that Daisy really hadn’t come over for dinner, Wendy fell silent in front of Donald the butler and the rest of the servants.
She was actually starving after shopping for the whole morning.
While she drank her water, she was suddenly reminded of how she spent $400 on Daisy’s cherry juice just now.
“Henson, I’ll need you to reimburse a cheque for me,” she said with a straight face.
He smiled: “Hand it over. I don’t mind reimbursing any number of cheques for you, be it one, or ten, or even a hundred. I’d be absolutely delighted to hear you spend my money on the things you like, whenever you like. After all, all the money I’ve earned should be spent for my family’s happiness, right?” he gloated.
She blushed at that. “Aren’t you exaggerating a bit too much,” she muttered and
pouted. “When we went out shopping today, the two of us bought some expensive fruit juice together. So, since I went out with the daughter-in-law of the Charles family, I feel that you should reimburse me for the money I spent on her,” she said.
“I refuse,” he huffed.
She glared at him after. “Why? She’s your sister-in-law,” she argued.
“Everything I have belongs to you, so I’ll only reimburse you for matters concerning yourself. That’s because everything that belongs to you also belongs to me,” he reasoned.
“Forget it, then. It’s just $400, after all. I can bear the cost myself,” she huffed.
This caused him to glance at her sideways. “This woman deliberately wants to piss me off,” he thought.
Donald the butler, who was standing behind him on the other hand, was trying his best not to burst out laughing. “It seems like his master has finally met his match,” he thought to himself and snickered.
After the both of them finished up with dinner, she returned to her chambers to rest, while
Henson called the Donald into his study.
“Did Daisy say anything to Wendy during breakfast this morning?” he asked.
Donald immediately understood his intentions.
As he daren’t lie in front of his master, he could only tell him the truth. “Madam Daisy told Miss Evans that you had breakfast with her this morning, but that you left halfway after receiving a call from the company,” he explained.
Henson’s face darkened at that.
“After breakfast, she also secretly asked me if Miss Evans and you were dating. She explained that she lied because she wanted to put Miss Evans to the test. However, Miss Evans didn’t seem upset by that at all, so Madam Daisy assumed that she didn’t care about you that much to warrant such a reaction. She also told me not to tell you anything about this so as not to anger you,” Donald explained.
Henson’s gaze turned chilly. “Got it. Go and busy yourself now,” he instructed.
Donald obliged and left the study.
Henson then picked up his phone to ring Daisy up.
She picked up the call almost instantly as usual.
“Henson,” she greeted, her voice soft.
“Why did you lie today?” he accused in a chilly tone.
“I-I really didn’t mean anything bad by doing that, you know. I just feel that since you love Wendy so much, I thought you’d be elated to hear that she bought clothes for you to wear,” she answered sheepishly.
“I’m not here for that. I was referring to the thing you said about me having breakfast with you,” he scowled.
Daisy frowned. “Tsk, she snitched on me,” she thought to herself.
“What’s there to discuss? Who knew Wendy could do such a childish thing behind the scenes with that innocent face of hers? I didn’t mean anything else by what I did in the morning, by the way. I just noticed how little she seemed to care about you, so I just wanted to put her to the test for you.
“Well, it turned out that my predictions were true. Later on, when I asked her to go shopping with me to buy clothes for you, I had the same intentions in mind. I just don’t want to see you get your feelings hurt, despite knowing how much you seem to love her. If that weren’t the case, why did you think I went through all that time and trouble to help her?” she replied frustratedly.
His reply was calm yet stern. “She’s my woman and I like her. I have my reasons for liking her, so I don’t need you to ‘test’ anything for me. Everyone reacts differently in different scenarios, so your ‘analyses’ isn’t enough to prove anything.
“If she’s mad at me because I had breakfast with my sister-in-law, then does that automatically make her a wretched woman? I know for a fact that she’s not that kind of woman.
“Also, I know you mean well, but please stop coming up with ways to ‘help’ her. We don’t need any outsiders to act as catalysts in our relationship. In fact, I quite enjoy the kind of calm and slow thing we have going on right now. That’s just the kind of girl my Wendy is. I just like how ordinary she is,” he explained.
Daisy cried when she heard this on the other side.
Her hands gripped her heart tightly as tears streamed down her face. She didn’t feel an ounce of sadness as she choked on her words.
He frowned. Before this, he’d always give in whenever she started crying,
but…
… he was a totally different person now.
“I’ve never forgotten a single detail about us all these years. I didn’t think we’d come to this back then at all. Is helping you in your current relationship wrong now, Henson? Can’t you tell that I’m just doing this for your own good? Don’t you even understand me?” she lamented between sobs.
“Stop prying into my affairs and just live your own life, Daisy. You’re not helping at all. I’m not the type of person who’d get excited over this kind of thing, because I know it will just upset Mason in the end. You know Mason suffers too when you’re unhappy, right? So, do you think it was worth it in the end after making all three of us unhappy just because you ‘mean well’?
“Mason really, really adores you. You just need to turn around and look at him squarely in the eyes to understand that. So, stop getting tangled up in the past and just let go already. It’s only by letting go of the past that you can move forward and actually see the man who loves you eye-to-eye,” he said.
“Save your breath, Henson. I apologise for being the busybody today, so you can stop berating me already. I’m a grown woman and I’ve heard the same spiel a million times already. Then again, knowing and doing are two entirely different things altogether,” she said menacingly and
immediately hung up.
He placed his phone down on the desk and fell silent for a long time.
A while later, he picked up his phone again to ring Mason up.
“When are you coming over to pick her up, Mason?” he asked the moment the call went through.
“What’s wrong?” Mason asked calmly.
“She can’t stay here forever, can she? I don’t think married couples should hold grudges towards each other for this long too. Having a few squabbles here and there is fine, but don’t you think someone needs to give in first?” Henson argued.
He genuinely thought that things would start getting more complicated if Daisy were to stay here any longer.
After all, he didn’t want to hurt her either.
Then again, he didn’t want anyone making Wendy upset either.
So, the only solution now was to send Daisy back.
“I really can’t be the first one to give in this time,” Mason said flatly. “If I do, then I’d essentially lose everything,”
“What do you mean by that, Mason? What in the world happened?” Henson asked, concerned.
“She didn’t tell you anything again?” Mason asked back.
“Nothing,” Henson replied with a frown while he shook his head.
Mason could only let out a sigh at this. “Just let her continue staying there then, she’ll tell you when she feels like it. Just remember to have people take care of her lodging, food and drink well,” he instructed.
“Alright, got it,” Henson sighed and
hung up. His face darkened afterwards. He couldn’t possibly let this go on.
A plan suddenly popped up in his mind, causing him to raise an eyebrow.
