Chapter 199 The Last Compromise

Book:Mr. Charles's Hidden Wife Published:2024-5-1

After they finished dinner, Henson had Donald send Daisy back to her apartment that was next to his.
To ensure that she had a nice stay here, Donald arranged for a few experienced servants in the main building to go over to take care of her life for the next few days.
The minute Daisy left, Henson phoned Mason up.
“Had your dinner yet, Mason?” he started.
“Yep. Did you call me just to tell me that Daisy’s at your place right now?” Mason responded.
“Yep. Did the two of you get into a fight or something?”
“She didn’t tell you?”
“No, she only told me that she wanted to stay over for a few days, and that if we didn’t want her here, she’d go to a hotel instead. The only reason I agreed for her to stay over was because I was afraid that you’d worry about her safety if she stayed at a hotel, so I had Donald tidy up your quarters just now so that she could lodge there,” Henson explained.
“Fine by me,” Mason muttered.
‘Fine by me’? “Well, aren’t you going to take her back?” Henson gasped.
“She probably wants some alone time for a week, right? Since that’s the case, I’ll swing by your place more than a week’s time later to pick her up then. Please have Donald look after her and make sure that she gets fed well,” Mason instructed.
This caused Henson to frown. Why was his brother suddenly so cool with allowing her to stay at his place by herself?
“Alright,” he said with a nod
and hung up. He then retreated to his room
to find that Wendy was in the middle of taking a shower.
He smiled before going to the bathroom next door to take a shower himself.
When he came back, she’d already put on her nightgown and was sitting in front of the dresser blow-drying her hair.
When she noticed him at the door, her cheeks flushed pink.
After all, it was only the two of them now. So, her mind instantly wandered to the events in the afternoon where they’d been interrupted.
She merely watched as he slowly approached her through his reflection in the mirror
and just as she was about to get up from her seat, he quickly pushed her back down by pressing his hands on her shoulders. He promptly took the hairdryer out of her hands afterwards
and started weaving one hand through her hair while drying her hair in the other.
She could only sit stiffly in front of the mirror while her heart pounded away.
She couldn’t believe that he was drying her hair for her…
He smiled after seeing her response. “This is the first time in my life that I’m drying someone’s hair for them, you know,” he chuckled.
When the both of them locked gazes with one another through the mirror, she quickly darted her gaze from his as she felt embarrassed.
She later tried reaching for the hair dryer in his hands, but
he raised his hands high in the air in response. “Let me,” he said.
“I can do it myself,” she huffed.
“While I’m here with you, just assume that my hands are yours,” he said while staring at her through the mirror. “No need for pleasantries here,” he chuckled mischievously.
She quickly averted her gaze to the floor at that.
After he was done drying her hair, he turned the device off and
the room instantly felt much quieter.
He then snaked his arms to her waist to hug her from behind and rested his head on one of her shoulders.
“Don’t you think we make a nice pair?”  he asked while looking at her reflection.
The moment he finished, the nervousness she had the whole time faded in an instant and she burst out in a giggling fit.
“What’s so funny?” he asked with a smirk.
While nodding her head, she said with a straight face, “You can be the wolf in this relationship, but don’t expect me to be your sheep, okay?”
“Hmm, you consider me a wolf?” he teased with an eyebrow raised.
From the mischievous look on his face, she suddenly realised what she was alluding to and quickly added, “Kidding,”
“I don’t think you’re the type to kid around though. I, for one, don’t like being likened to something I’m not, so since you’ve already said it yourself that it’d be a shame if I kept pushing down my true beast-like nature…” he trailed off and scooped her up in his arms in a princess carry fashion. “… I feel it’s time we pick up from where we left off before dinner,” he teased and
plopped her on the bed before pouncing on her.
She instantly blocked his advances by shoving her arms to his shoulders. “Wait!” she shouted.
“Objection denied,” he said.
“I still plan on objecting though,” she replied with eyes filled with determination.
With his eyebrows still raised, he asked, “We could’ve finished by now if Daisy hadn’t come over, so what are you objecting to now?”
She’d been blinded by her impulses back then, but her mind had been cleared of all fog now.
“There are no ‘if’s when Miss Hunt is actually here right now,” she said.
He frowned at that and his heart sunk. “Daisy and I are no longer an item, and she’s my in-law now. So, there’s no need to get your knickers in a twist over her anymore, right?” he asked in frustration.
“Some things…” she said after mulling it over for some time.
How could she even put into words how she felt now?
It was hard to forget the look in his eyes when he heard the words ‘Madam Daisy’ just now. She was afraid that her man couldn’t give her his whole heart.
After all, all she wanted from him was for him to give her his all.
The fear she obtained from her past had caused her to have a hard time accepting her own feelings, more so now that another person was involved in the whole thing.
“I just feel that I’m not ready for this yet. I just hope that you can give me some time to process my emotions now,” she muttered sheepishly.
Her pitiful expression was a signal to him that he had to give up on his advances towards her already.
She obviously didn’t want to do it now, so he knew that he shouldn’t force himself upon her anymore.
He eventually flopped back to his side the bed and gave a sigh. “You’ve managed to dodge another bullet this time, Wendy Evans, but I’ll have you know this is the last time I’m willing to let it slide, alright? So, I’d advise you to stop overthinking things and ready yourself as quickly as you can before the next time comes,” he said.
She didn’t reply as she laid on the bed with her back turned to him.
Deep down, she knew that she was the one with the problem.
It was obvious that she was getting fonder and more reliant on him as the days passed,
and yet, it was still so hard for her to convince herself that all of this was real.
It just didn’t feel real that such an accomplished man like Henson would fall in love with her and only wanted her in his life. Everything just didn’t sit well with her.
How was she supposed to overcome this fear of hers?
How was she supposed to live up to her feelings?
He then inched closer to her to hug her from behind, to which
she turned around to snuggle up to him in his arms. She slowly drifted off to sleep with all sorts of thoughts swirling around in her mind.
She woke up at eight the next morning. She surmised it was because she slept late the night prior.
He was no longer in the room at the time.
After washing up, she headed downstairs to see Daisy having breakfast by herself at the dining table.
She’d be lying if she said that she was comfortable with Daisy’s presence right here right now.
The moment Donald saw her, he immediately greeted, “Good morning, Miss Evans,”
“Good morning, Donald,” she greeted in turn.
Upon hearing voices, Daisy turned around to look at her. “Perfect timing, Wendy. Let’s have breakfast together,” she cooed.
Wendy merely smiled and nodded in response as she slowly made her way over.
After looking around the living room, she reckoned that Henson had left already.
As if she could see through her thoughts, Daisy immediately chirped with a giggle, “When I was having breakfast with Henson just now, he received a call and told me that he had urgent matters to settle in the company, so he left without even finishing his breakfast,”
Wendy could only force an awkward laugh at that as
she thought to how he used to have breakfast with her every morning before this,
but it seemed like Daisy was his stand-in now that she was here.
Donald the butler, on the other hand, was dumbfounded by their conversation while he stood in a corner.
He’d been by his master’s side since the moment he woke up, but there was literally no such event where his master had joined Daisy for breakfast??
