Kathryn POV
I don’t know how but Dave’s boss just snuck up behind us. It gave us a big surprise and we shook as we heard his voice.
“Well? Do I look like the kind of man to mess around with. You only have the job of being an errand boy and that’s it. Now what are you doing with this girl?” Mr Adams asked.
I turned to Dave and it was obvious he didn’t have anything to say.
“I’m sorry sir. It’s just that he was looking so sad and I thought I might just try and cheer him up.” I explained.
“And who gave you the right to do that? Are you one of my employees?” He asked rhetorically.
I answered him anyway.
“I’m not sir, but I don’t think it would be right if I know I could help someone but didn’t do so.” I said confidently.
“Wow! You are such a talker. Do you know that? I don’t even know who you are.” He said, in a mood that said, I’m not impressed.
“Let me worry about that.” I replied.
After realizing that he probably won’t beat me in our little word battle, he finally turned to Dave.
“So, you brought a girl to defend you huh? You coward. I always knew you didn’t have it in you.” Mr Adams said.
“He didn’t bring me here.” I cut in.
“I’m here on my own will.” I added.
“Whoever it us you are. You’d better get out of my company right now. It’s not for kids to come in and play.” He said in a tone that said he was getting annoyed.
I smiled realizing my victory. I decided to round it up and leave. I just hope he doesn’t give too hard on Dave.
“Not for kids huh?” I asked.
“Yes! It isn’t!” He replied, clearly angry.
“Really? And yet you’re here.” I said and ran away.
I never knew that we were being watched and listened to by almost everyone in the company and when I noticed it I was very happy that I won. I turned and waved Dave goodbye. Dave was about to wave back but he didn’t after seeing his boss’s stare on him.
Dave POV
I am so doomed is the sentence I kept repeating in my head when Kathryn was talking to Mr Adams. She waved at me before finally existing the company.
I wanted to wave back but stopped when I noticed Mr Adams was staring at me.
Here it comes. The end boy my job. Mr Adams is very angry right now.
“To my office now!” He yelled.
He went back into his office and I followed from behind him.
Honestly… I’m ready for the magic words ‘You Are Fired’
It was almost as if that was what I personally wanted right now.
Mr Adams Sat on his seat and quite obviously made himself comfortable.
“So you are now dating right? And you now have the nerves bring your girlfriend to my own company?” He asked, rudely.
“I’m sorry about what happened sir but I didn’t bring her here and neither is she my girlfriend. I only just me her.” I said.
“Really?” He asked.
“Yes sir.” I replied.
“You must really think me to be very stupid. From now onwards you won’t have your own desk. You will have to either sit on the floor or stand all day long.” He replied and laughed hard at me.
But then Mr Adams looked up at me after laughing.
“You’re telling the truth. I believe you.” He said.
“Really sir? Thank you so much sir.” I said in gratitude.
Little did I know that that just just another stage of his insults.
“You’re too poor for any girl to date you know. And even if a girl manages to be as poor enough to be your wife she won’t marry you. Do you know why? It’s because you’re nobody. You have no name, so I really find it difficult to believe that any girl would want you as a boyfriend talk less of agreeing to marry you.” He said in a disgusted tone.
I felt a kind of cold flush down my whole body but I decided to just ignore him and not let him get to me.
Meeting and talking to Kathryn really helped me a lot and I started regaining my confidence little by little.
Mr Adams said a lot more things to me but I payed deaf ears to all his insults. I’m very sure that he is doing all these things to hurt me on purpose but only one question ran through my mind… Why?
I kept asking myself that question each time Mr Adams insulted me. Why us he doing it.
I asked myself this because as far as I know, I and Mr Adams were very close before all this started. This change in his behavior was something new to me.
After some hours we closed for the day and Mr Charles dropped me back home.
I thanked him and then went into our compound.
Anna POV
My son is finally back from work. I hugged him and pecked him on the forehead.
“How was work son?” I asked.
“Work… Yeah it was fine… As usual.” He replied.
“Dave. Is anything the matter?” I asked him.
“No no. Of course not. Why would I want to hide anything from you mother?” He replied but I could here the shivering in his voice.
“Dave.” I said and sat him down.
“Yes mother.” He replied.
“Look me in the eyes and stay away from trouble. You know I’m your mother Dave. So you can definitely trust me with anything you want to.” I said in a comforting voice.
“Mother.” Dave said and finally began to cry.
“What’s wrong Dave? Tell me about it.” I said.
He just continued to cry on my shoulder. I became even more worried about Dave. Something was bothering me earlier today and now that my son is back I know what it was. It was a mother’s instinct.
