Can you bear the consequences of such an outcome?
Hamish’s pitch-black eyes flickered with a dangerous light, and Elisa felt her entire body stiffen under his intense gaze. It was as if invisible hands were squeezing her throat, and her eyes turned bloodshot, her chest rising and falling with each breath.
“You beast, Hamish!”
“I can do something even more beastly than this. Would you like to find out? He looked down at Elisa from his superior position, his mouth curling into a contemptuous smile as if he had suddenly realized something.
“Elisa, you better be obedient and not provoke my anger. If you behave, I can treat you better. If you don’t, you’ll regret it in the future. Think about it carefully.”
Elisa remembered the nightmare from that night, and her heart skipped a beat.
Hamish had never shown her any respect. Even if she didn’t bring up divorce, the outcome awaiting her would be the same. It was better to make an effort, at least for the chance of achieving the desired outcome.
“I don’t need to think anymore. Let’s go to court. I can’t bear the loss of two lives. Her father and the child in her womb. If it weren’t for him constantly using Ivan to threaten her, she would have divorced him long ago.”
Hamish stood before her, towering over her. Looking down at Elisa from his height, his face appeared sinister.
Elisa had made up her mind to divorce him. She no longer cared about anyone else and was no longer afraid of his threats and intimidation.
Hamish clenched his fist, forcefully suppressing the anger burning inside him. He was truly afraid that he wouldn’t be able to control his temper and would harm Elisa. He had never encountered anyone who dared to defy him!
Hamish stormed out, leaving Elisa alone in the room. The room, which had previously held some tenderness, now felt dead and cold. In the sunlight, Elisa’s face lacked any trace of color.
Thinking about the harsh words that Hamish had just uttered and the nightmare she had experienced, her stomach churned. Elisa couldn’t care less about the pain in her back and leaned over the edge of the bed, vomiting repeatedly into the trash can. She expelled all the porridge she had recently eaten, even though there was nothing left in her stomach. But she still felt uncomfortable.
Tears blurred her vision, and she lay on the bed, lacking the strength to turn over. The malicious words from Hamish kept replaying in her mind, as if her heart was being branded with a scorching iron, as if something had been scorched along with it.
Elisa bit down on her back teeth, forcefully holding back her tears.
After that, Hamish never returned. The person taking care of her was a female nurse who helped with her medication.
By the third day, the wounds on her back had scabbed over. Elisa started looking for a lawyer, but once they found out it was Hamish, none of them dared to take the case.
In the end, Elisa had no choice but to turn to Hattie.
“You should have divorced that scum long ago. Don’t worry, I have a video saved on my phone. I’ll send it to you later. Show it to the lawyer when you meet him. You should have a good chance of getting a divorce.”
That video was the confrontation between Hattie and Lila, which she had saved earlier. She had kept it, just in case it might come in handy someday.
Hattie introduced Elisa to a lawyer who had recently returned from overseas. Elisa contacted him and arranged to meet at a coffee shop.
After the lawyer investigated Hamish and heard Elisa’s account, he simply said one word: “difficult.”
In theory, the video Elisa possessed, which proved Hamish’s infidelity and domestic violence, should be enough to successfully pursue a divorce in court. But why did the lawyer say it was difficult?
The lawyer explained, “Because it’s Hamish.”
When he returned to Rong City, the first person he became acquainted with was Hamish. Hamish was extremely famous in Bankshire. The Burns Group under his name was not just a simple company; it was intertwined with the entire economic lifeline of Bankshire.
Companies of this caliber could not do without a legal department and top-notch lawyers. The lawyer had looked into the cases they had handled before, and not a single one had ended in failure. They were considered the undefeated champions of Bankshire.
It was no wonder no lawyer dared to take the case before. The success rate was low, and they didn’t want to offend the Burns Group.
“Can’t domestic violence and infidelity be grounds for divorce?”
“One-sided testimonies without concrete evidence are difficult to prove,” the lawyer paused and said, “I watched the video you sent me. However, the other party can still provide substantial counterarguments, which weakens its effectiveness.”
