As the sky brightened, the sunlight was blocked by the heavy curtains, and faint rays of light seeped in through the cracks, casting a dim glow in the room. Elisa woke up, feeling a soreness all over her body. She sat up and gradually adjusted to this strange pain before slowly getting out of bed. She walked to the wardrobe, opened the doors, and took out a set of professional attire. As she was halfway through putting it on, she suddenly noticed a box of medicine in the trash can.
She walked over, picked it up, and took a look. Wasn’t this the medicine she had taken last night? She remembered putting it back in the drawer after taking it. There was no doubt that Hamish had thrown it in the trash can.
Elisa clenched the medicine box, biting her lower lip until she felt the pain of teeth marks before letting go. She recalled the nightmare from last night, remembering Hamish’s gaze in the darkness. Elisa suddenly felt fear.
A chill ran from her feet to her palms, turning her hands icy cold. She crouched on the ground, trembling with fear.
She knew too well what kind of person Hamish was, which made her afraid of the nightmare coming true. Hamish was heartless and ruthless, he didn’t have any affection for her. All he had was possessiveness.
It was like a kite held in his hand, sometimes loose, sometimes tight. She flew high but couldn’t escape his grasp. She struggled desperately while Hamish just played with her.
Hamish, who had long held power, simply disliked the feeling of losing control. So, as far as he was concerned, the child was just a tool for him to control. Who would raise the child after it was born, what the future would be like, and what problems might arise were not within his scope of consideration.
She was so scared, really scared.
Elisa thought of a movie she had seen before, where a woman was abducted and taken to the mountains. At first, she thought about escaping, but later she was locked in a house and forced to get pregnant. After giving birth, she gave up the idea of running away.
So sometimes, mental imprisonment was even more terrifying than physical confinement. Once a person accepted their fate, even if they had wings, they couldn’t fly away.
She was afraid of becoming the woman in the movie. If Hamish really wanted her to have a child, she had no ability to refuse.
Just like the nightmare she had, being locked in the house, helplessly watching her belly grow day by day…
The sound of her phone alarm suddenly interrupted her thoughts. Elisa wiped the medicine box clean and put it back in the drawer.
Elisa really wanted to get rid of the image of herself giving birth from her mind, but the more she tried to shake it off, the clearer the image became.
Ariella made heart-shaped eggs for breakfast, which Elisa usually enjoyed. But when she pierced the yolk with a fork and it flowed out, her body had an extreme reaction. She covered her mouth and rushed into the bathroom to vomit.
What came out still had traces of blood. Afraid of being discovered by Ariella, Elisa flushed the toilet while vomiting.
Ariella, however, overthought the situation and thought Elisa was pregnant.
She stood outside the bathroom door, listening to the sounds inside. Seeing that Elisa was vomiting so violently, she became worried. She poured a glass of warm water and waited for Elisa to come out before handing it over.
“Miss Powell, drink some hot water.”
Elisa felt weak from vomiting, her hands trembling. She took the glass and hoarsely said, “Thank you.”
Ariella watched as she drank the water and asked, “Miss Powell, are you pregnant?”
Elisa frowned, not understanding the meaning behind her words. “Pregnant? What do you mean?”
Ariella sighed, “Oh, it means you’re pregnant.”
“I’m not pregnant.”
“Why were you vomiting so violently then? Is it a stomach problem? I should call Dr. West to come over.”
Ariella was hot-headed, partly genuinely concerned about Elisa, and partly afraid that Hamish would come back and question her. She immediately took out her phone.
Elisa reached out and stopped her. “No need to make the call, I have stomach medicine.”
“But…”
Elisa said, “I’m really fine, it’s just an old problem. Just don’t tell Hamish, okay?”
“Why not tell Mr. Burns?” Ariella couldn’t understand. This was the first time she had seen a couple with such a dynamic, so distant from each other. Despite feeling so uncomfortable, why didn’t Elisa tell her own husband? Didn’t she want to be cared for?
“I just don’t want to worry him,” Elisa blurted out a lie, “You’llknow when you’re in a relationship.”
