Chapter 139: The Caged Bird

Book:Mr. Burns Is Killing His Wife Published:2024-6-4

Hamish didn’t sleep all night, and as the sky grew brighter, he got up. The first thing he did wasn’t to wash up or change clothes; instead, he stood on the balcony, opened the window, and lit a cigarette.
The ashtray on the table was already filled with cigarette butts. When he bumped into Ariella downstairs, he suddenly stopped her and asked, “Do you think I’m good to Elisa?”
Ariella was taken aback. Was he good to her? From her perspective, he was, but after hearing Elisa’s words, she wasn’t so sure anymore.
Ariella looked at Hamish’s bloodshot eyes, and her heart skipped a beat. She put on a bright smile and said, “You are exceptionally good to Mrs. Elisa!”
Hamish asked thoughtfully, “In what way am I good to her?”
Ariella couldn’t quite pinpoint in what way he was good to her, but she could feel that this man in front of her liked Elisa. Ariella was grateful that she had checked the latest hot search yesterday.
“Weren’t you the one who bid a high price for an island to build a amusement park for Mrs. Elisa? 520 million, that number represents love for her. And Mrs. Elisa is clearly someone who enjoys going to amusement parks…” Ariella rambled on.
Ariella was definitely speaking from her heart. When she saw the news on the hot search, she was extremely envious. If there was a handsome and wealthy man who spent over two billion to build an amusement park for her, she would be ecstatically happy.
So, Hamish was truly good to Elisa. At the very least, he wasn’t like some men who only talked but took no action.
Hamish found solace in Ariella’s words, and his gloomy expression relaxed.
When he arrived at the company, he bumped into Tobias and asked the same question again.
“Do you think I’m good to Elisa?”
This question puzzled Tobias. Various images floated through his mind as he tried to think of the positive side, but all he could see were Elisa’s weak and pale face. Honestly, he couldn’t see how Hamish was good to Elisa, but should he tell the truth?
Tobias cautiously glanced at Hamish, whose expression was as inscrutable as his heart, making it difficult to figure out.
After waiting for a while without receiving an answer, Hamish grew impatient. “Is this question so difficult to answer?”
Tobias quickly shook his head, desperately lying to avoid getting fired. “You treat Miss Powell very well.”
Hamish sat back in his boss chair, leaning against the soft backrest. His upper body had rolled up sleeves, revealing muscular arms. He opened the drawer, took out a pack of cigarettes, lit one, and casually asked, “Then tell me, in what ways do I treat her well?”
Tobias was more quick-witted than Ariella. He blurted out without thinking, “You helped bury Miss Powell’s father, and yesterday, when you spoke in front of the reporters, I, as a man, was deeply moved. You trust her so much that you entrusted such a huge project as South Water Island to her.”
Hamish rested the hand holding the cigarette on the armrest of the chair, tapping it absentmindedly. The ashes, with sparks flickering, fell to the ground intermittently. Hamish mumbled to himself, “Then why is she still so cold to me? Does she hate me?”
Tobias scratched his head, racking his brain for something to say. After a while, he finally came up with a comforting sentence. “Mr. Burns, this woman is like water. You have to go along with her, coax her more, and don’t impose your thoughts on her. Once she gets used to your attention to details, she won’t be able to leave you. You know your own merits.”
Hamish raised an eyebrow and glanced at him. “You seem to understand this. Have you been in love before?”
Tobias felt a bit embarrassed. “Well, I haven’t had the opportunity, you know?”
“Talk is cheap,” Hamish sneered. “Prepare the documents for South Water Island and give them to Elisa. When she comes to the company later, you follow her.”
“Does that mean I’ll be her assistant from now on?”
“Any objections?”
“No, none,” Tobias shook his head quickly, not only without objections but also quite satisfied. Elisa seemed much easier to get along with than Hamish.
“Assist her and don’t let her get tired.”
“Absolutely,” Tobias showed a pleasing smile. “Mr. Burns, you are really considerate towards Miss Powell.”
Hamish extinguished the cigarette.
