Chapter 107: You Must Listen

“Really?” Lila asked cautiously.
Hamish took a while before he finally uttered, “Hmm.”
He continued, “I’ve been staying at the hospital taking care of Elisa these past few days. If you have nothing to do, go back with Mrs. Gordon, pack your belongings, and move out. Elisa wouldn’t want to see you when she’s discharged and Mrs. Gordon can leave with you. After all, she’s the one you chose, and I trust she’ll take care of you in the future.”
The hope that had just arisen in Lila’s heart was instantly extinguished by Hamish’s cold water. She couldn’t believe it for a moment, watching Hamish’s figure as if in a daze. Her mouth was open, but no words came out. She could only helplessly watch him leave with indifference.
There were many answers she already knew without asking. Hamish had said he would marry her and take care of her, but he had never told her he loved her.
Who Hamish truly loved, perhaps not even he himself knew.
This was the first time Hamish had been angry at her, all because of Elisa.
Lila really wanted to ask him what he thought of her, but she didn’t dare to speak up. Some things, once brought to light, would only bring shame upon oneself.
Hamish left the ward without looking back, lightly resting his hand on the doorknob. It seemed like a gentle movement, but the sound of the door closing was loud and resounding.
With one loud sound, the door closed and locked away her entrance into Hamish’s heart. Tears fell continuously to the ground, forming a small puddle.
At that moment of leaving, Hamish seemed to hear the sound of a woman’s sobbing and laughter from inside.
He paid no attention and went straight to Elisa’s room. This time, instead of pushing the door open directly, he lightly knocked on it to see if it was convenient inside.
After waiting for a while, a nurse came and opened the door. The first glance she gave him was one of astonishment, which quickly turned to indifference, and finally, she lowered her head, hiding the expression in her eyes from view.
“How is she?” he asked curtly.
“She’s still asleep.”
“When will she wake up?” Hamish asked, his voice cold and firm.
“I don’t know. She’ll wake up when she wakes up,” the nurse replied dismissively. Seeing that there was only him in the corridor, she added, “If you have nothing to do, you can leave. I’m here, it’s fine.”
Though her expression didn’t change, a hint of disdain could be heard in her tone. Hamish wasn’t angry, he just looked at Elisa lying in the bed inside.
He couldn’t see her face, only her hand outside the blanket. Her slender, pale wrist was covered in wounds, and the application of the yellowish medicine made the wounds look even more hideous.
The previous scene replayed in his mind, including the doctor’s reprimand towards him.
It was him who had provoked Elisa and caused her to end up like this. She didn’t want to see him.
Hamish turned around desolately and didn’t go anywhere. Instead, he sat on a chair in the corridor. This ward was located at the far end, and when he looked to the right, he could see the long corridor in its entirety. The surrounding silence was eerie. This kind of silence was different from being alone at home-it was cold, lonely, and inescapable.
Hamish let out a long sigh and took out his phone to pass the time. He sent a text message to Tobias, asking him to check the surveillance videos at North Bankshire.
Today was a day off, so Tobias took longer than usual to reply. Hamish waited for nearly ten minutes before receiving a response.
Leaning his head against the cold wall, he closed his eyes, seemingly taking a nap, but in reality, he was listening attentively to the movements inside Elisa’s room.
It was quiet in there, and the cries and shouts he was worried about didn’t happen until evening.
On the contrary, Lila came out. She had cried for a long time, her eyes swollen like walnuts, looking exhausted. Mrs. Gordon stood by her side, supporting her. Knowing that the two of them were having a conflict, she didn’t know what to say and could only quietly support Lila.
Lila looked at Hamish in surprise. For a moment, she thought he was waiting for her, but when she saw that the nearest room to him was Elisa’s, not hers, she immediately understood.
Disappointment was certain, but now she had no other emotions besides disappointment. She walked up to Hamish and paused her steps. “Hamish, I’m going back.”
Hamish slowly opened his eyes and glanced at her.”Okay,” he replied indifferently.
His cold demeanor made it seem as if he was treating a stranger.
