“Elisa, just be a baby-making tool and keep giving birth. Don’t worry, I will take good care of your children. I won’t let them lose their arms or legs. I will make sure they live just like you, barely alive.”
Hamish’s handsome face froze as he listened to the voice message. His pupils dilated, and then his skin began to crack slowly and finely.
Lila still held onto Hamish’s arm, but not as tightly as before. A chilling sensation from the depths of her heart instantly spread throughout her body, reaching every corner. Even her toes curled up from the cold, and her calf couldn’t stop trembling.
“It’s not like that, Hamish…”
After a long while, Hamish finally looked down at her. His gaze was cold, and there was not a hint of a smile on his face. The intimidation emanating from him made Lila shudder uncontrollably.
All that came to Lila’s mind was: It’s over.
“So, what should it be like?” Hamish’s mouth curved into a smile, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes. He never expected that Lila would say those words to Elisa after he left. Every word, every syllable, was like a steel needle.
He stared at her for a long time. “Lila.”
Lila suddenly let go of his hand. She couldn’t help but step back, watching as the ferocity gradually revealed itself on Hamish’s face. It scared her, even though he didn’t say a word. She broke out in a cold sweat.
She was afraid, afraid of this man she had known for over ten years.
Hattie watched the scene quietly, realizing that there was no need to continue playing the video.
“Lila, I’ll give you a chance to explain.”
Lila’s mind went blank, and tears flowed from her eyes before she could say anything. Her tearful eyes pleaded, “The things I said to Elisa weren’t what I truly felt. I was just jealous, jealous that she took you away for so many years. I didn’t mean any harm to her, Hamish, please believe me. You know that’s not who I am normally.”
Hattie sneered while holding her phone. “So, you deliberately said those things to provoke Elisa and then lied, saying she wanted to kill you.”
“Shut up!” Lila’s tears flowed even more violently.
Hamish looked at the tears on her face, surprisingly calm and indifferent inside.
Hattie turned the phone towards Hamish, and in the video, Elisa propped herself up and fell off the bed.
Lila took a step back when she could have easily avoided it, but she let Elisa’s foot press down on her own. She even secretly kicked Elisa, and it was that kick that pulled out the IV needle from Elisa’s arm.
The picture was indeed clear, clear enough to see Lila’s ferocious face and the glaring redness on Elisa’s arm.
Hattie said, “Do you still want to believe her?”
Lila didn’t dare to look at her own ferocious face in the video. She anxiously cried out, “Hamish, don’t be deceived by appearances. The video is misleading.”
Hattie furrowed her brows. This woman was really good at changing her words, saying anything she wanted.
“The words may not have been intentional, and the video may be misleading. You have taken advantage of everything, haven’t you? It serves Elisa right to be bullied like a fool. Lila, get ready for a lawyer’s letter.”
After saying that, Hattie put her phone back in her white coat and turned to leave the hospital room. There was a lot of work to be done, and she didn’t have time to waste on watching a drama queen. She had said what needed to be said at this point, unless Hamish’s mind was broken, he wouldn’t continue to believe Lila’s words.
Throughout the whole process, Hamish remained silent, quiet as if he didn’t exist.
Only after Hattie left, Lila stood before him with bloodshot eyes and cried, “Hamish, do you believe her words?”
“I don’t believe her words, I believe my ears and my eyes.”
“But sometimes ears and eyes can deceive people.” Lila raised her voice, her eyes bloodshot. “Hamish, we’ve known each other for so many years. How can you believe a video presented by a female doctor you just met today? You know me, I would never lie to you.”
“You reminded me of something. Eyes and ears can deceive people too.”
Lila’s forehead hadn’t even relaxed when Hamish bent down and pinched her chin, the force as if he wanted to crush the bones there.
“How many times have you lied to me, Lila?”
