“You knew all along?” Lila’s eyes sparkled briefly, and she nodded, saying, “Mrs. Gordon recently saw Elisa taking medication and became curious, so she took a peek. It’s quite a coincidence that her daughter-in-law is also pregnant and taking the same kind of medicine.”
So he was the last one to know about Elisa’s pregnancy? Hamish felt a pang in his heart, not quite understanding why Elisa had kept it from him.
Thinking about the lost child, Hamish felt a dull pain in his chest, his voice choked as he asked, “When did you find out?”
“Yesterday. I thought you already knew, so I didn’t tell you,” Lila lowered her head and nodded.
If he had known, he wouldn’t have pushed Elisa down the stairs and caused her to miscarry.
Lila paused and glanced at Hamish’s expression before hesitating, “And then, today before Elisa pushed me down the stairs, she said something…”
“What did she say?”
Lila hesitated, her face filled with uncertainty, which only made Hamish more annoyed and irritable.
“I told you not to get angry, but Elisa, after all, just had a miscarriage,” Lila said softly.
Hamish stared at her without even blinking.
“She said she feels sick being with you and she also said…” Lila said, pursing her lips as she looked at him. At this moment, Hamish’s face was tense and unusually cold, his gaze sharp and piercing. His shirt was wrinkled and stained with blood, adding a touch of grimness to his appearance.
Lila’s heart skipped a beat, and she forced herself to remain calm as she continued, “She said she wants to retaliate against us. Hamish, I’m not imagining things. Since she said these things and hid her pregnancy from you, I suspect she deliberately miscarried to make you feel guilty.”
Hamish’s eyes were inscrutable, like a deep abyss with stagnant water, carrying contents she couldn’t discern.
Although Hamish’s face appeared calm, his hand on his thigh had clenched into a tight fist, knuckles turning white. The veins on his arm stood out, pulsating, as he suppressed his emotions.
“Did Elisa really say that?” Hamish asked.
Lila nodded.
Hamish’s lips curled into a smile, as if he suddenly understood everything. No wonder Elisa had kept her pregnancy a secret from him. It turned out she was waiting for this.
She wanted him to feel guilty and remorseful so she could seek revenge? Quite a beautiful plan.
Hamish never showed his emotions, but his heart burned like fire. His face remained calm as water, while Lila couldn’t grasp his current mood. However, she had already achieved her goal.
She didn’t believe that even after saying all this, Hamish would still want to be with Elisa.
“Hamish, are the conditions you promised me over the phone today true?” Lila asked with a steady gaze.
Hamish: “Yes, I’ll give you everything I can.”
Lila stared at him intently, feeling wronged as she said, “I want to marry you. I don’t want to be called a mistress by Elisa anymore.”
Hamish’s gaze turned cold, and he suddenly revealed a faint smile. “I’ll marry you in a year.”
Lila’s body stiffened, her voice trembling with suppressed emotions. “Why do we have to wait for a year?”
“Lila, do you like children?” Hamish asked.
Lila didn’t quite understand the meaning behind his words. When the topic of children came up, she touched her stomach. The accident four years ago had robbed her of the ability to be a mother.
“I like them, but I can never have my own child in this lifetime,” she said, growing more resentful of Elisa. If it weren’t for her, she wouldn’t have been in that car accident.
For the past few years, she had been avoiding this issue, but now Hamish suddenly brought it up, and she had to face it.
The Burns family was not an ordinary family. As an aristocratic noble family, they placed great importance on heirs. If she couldn’t have children, Hamish’s parents would not agree to their marriage.
Lila cautiously probed, “Hamish, are you unwilling to divorce Elisa because I can’t have children?”
Hamish held Lila’s cold hand, rubbing his thumb on the back of her hand to comfort her. “Why would you think that? If you can’t have children, we’ll find a surrogate. The child will be raised by you just like your own. Besides, giving birth is painful.”
As he spoke, Hamish paused, his expression suddenly turning cold. “But now there’s a ready-made solution. We can skip finding a surrogate.”
“Ready-made”Ready-made?” Lila inquired.
“Yes, let Elisa give birth. Once the child is born, we can get married, and you can raise her child. What do you think?” He spoke as if negotiating, but his eyes left no room for refusal.
Lila felt discontent in her heart. She had said she liked children, but it wasn’t Elisa’s turn to be the surrogate. What was Hamish thinking?
The words at the tip of her tongue were forcefully swallowed down. Hamish’s words had made it clear that his intentions wouldn’t change. Instead of wasting her breath on this matter, she might as well go along with Hamish’s words.
Looking at it from a different perspective, this was also a way to torment Elisa. Thinking about how she could torment her child in the future, it brought her a certain sense of enjoyment.
