Freya turned around, a smile on her face. “I know that it’s something important to you.”
Elijah explained, “It’s not that I don’t want to show you, it’s just… it’s not important…”
“Is it really not important?” Freya asked in return. She clearly remembered the terrifying look on his face when Elijah got angry about that thing. Before, she truly didn’t care. But now, if she said she didn’t care at all, that would be a lie.
“Elijah, you were once young too, did you ever like or have a crush on any woman…”
“Enough,” Elijah interrupted her.
Freya frowned slightly.
It seemed like he was… angry?!
But why?
Because it touched upon some untold past, which Elijah still cared so much?
Freya spoke earnestly, “Elijah, do you have someone hidden in your heart?”
Elijah denied, “No.”
Freya didn’t believe him. If there was no one, why did he react so strongly? Who was the person that left something so important to him?
“Whether you have it or not, you know it in your heart. I hope our relationship is built on honesty and mutual trust. If one day, I stop believing in you, it will be because of something you did.”
After saying that, Freya turned and walked out.
The door closed. Elijah stood there without moving. He understood what Freya meant. It was just that some things weren’t easily let go of.
During dinner, Freya kept her head down and remained silent. After the meal, she went into their youngest son’s room. And she didn’t come out, she slept in there. Elijah waited for her for a long time and he pondered for a long time. Freya was the one who would accompany him for a lifetime; he should be honest with her. He shouldn’t hide anything; he shouldn’t make her doubt him or feel uneasy.
Elijah went downstairs and pushed open the door to the room. The room was illuminated by a soft orange night light, not glaring, but enough to see things clearly. He walked in quietly, bending down to look at Freya. Freya closed her eyes. She wasn’t asleep; when Elijah opened the door, she instinctively closed her eyes. Perhaps she wanted to avoid him.
Elijah pulled back the covers and his hand reached around her waist, gently pulling her into his arms. Freya pretended to wake up passively. “Hmm…”
“Why did you come in?” she asked.
Elijah whispered, “To carry you upstairs.”
“I wanted to spend time with our son…”
Elijah directly exposed her, “Clearly, you’re throwing a tantrum. We’re getting married soon, and you’re still acting up?”
Freya felt that he was being unreasonable. He was the one who refused to be honest with her.
“I know you’re hiding someone in your heart, Elijah. I don’t want you to regret it.”
Elijah furrowed his brows. How did the conversation become more and more off track?
His tone turned serious. “Stop overthinking.”
“Am I overthinking, or can’t you wholeheartedly love only me? Maybe you love me, but there’s still a corner of your heart for someone else. Is that it?”
Freya didn’t lack understanding, nor did she lack acceptance. It was just that she hoped Elijah could handle things like she did with Adam Jackson, being open and honest with her. But Elijah only wanted to conceal it.
Elijah came down from the stairs, holding her tightly to make her feel comfortable.
Freya struggled. “Let me go.”
“Don’t move!” Elijah’s tone was commanding when he said those words.
Freya held her breath, turning her head away.
Entering the study, Elijah sat her down on the desk and opened the safe. He took out the box from inside and handed it to her.
“Take a look.”
Freya said, “I don’t want to look.”
Elijah pulled out a chair and sat down, face to face with her. One was sitting on the desk, the other was on the chair. Elijah fell silent for a moment before he said, “I was once young, but I have self-control, and I also don’t have time to think about relationships between men and women… I remember clearly, it happened at my parents’ funeral. I was pushed into the water… I couldn’t swim, and it was the closest I’ve ever been to death. But I was lucky, someone saved me. This thing, it was left by my lifesaver, so I cherish it. It’s not about any romantic relationships.”
