Elijah responded, “Hmm.”
He too was hoping for a different outcome.
Freya shook her head, “No.”
That child was not hers. They had no blood relation whatsoever.
Elijah’s eyes briefly showed disappointment, but quickly concealed it deep within. He held Freya in his arms, soothingly saying, “It’s alright, okay? It doesn’t matter. We won’t stop looking for the child. I received some information today that there might be a lead. Don’t worry.”
Elijah had prepared her for this possibility; he told her that if the child was indeed theirs, Ronan wouldn’t easily bring the baby in front of her for her to discover. But now that this fact had been confirmed, the feeling of loss was unstoppable.
Freya was afraid that her child would suffer. She was a doctor, and maintaining composure was part of her basic training. So she quickly adjusted her emotions. She looked at Evan and said, “Return the child to Ronan.”
Since it wasn’t hers, there was no need to keep it.
“Is this child Ronan’s?” Evan asked.
Freya hadn’t made that determination. And even if she did, it wouldn’t make much difference, would it?
As she spoke, she looked at Elijah, seeming to seek his opinion. Elijah remained silent as if pondering something.
Freya called him, “Elijah.”
Elijah snapped out of his thoughts and whispered to her, “Go back first, Freya. I’ll handle things here.”
Freya fell silent for a moment, seeing his determination, she didn’t say anything else, “Alright.”
“The driver is outside, let him take you.” Elijah said.
Freya nodded, informing him that the baby was inside, and then she left. After Freya left, Elijah called Evan, “Go investigate Ronan’s whereabouts in the past two months, including the woman he married and whether the child is his.”
“Yes.” Evan replied. After hesitating for a moment, he asked, “Mr Silverton, what are you suspecting?”
Elijah’s gaze deepened, “I think Ronan’s appearance this time is a test.”
He was using this baby to test his and Freya’s reaction.
Evan went to pick up the baby. Perhaps due to the effects of the drugs, the baby was soundly asleep and didn’t wake up when Evan picked him up.
“Should I release Ronan now?” Evan asked.
Elijah said, “Have someone monitor him.”
“Yes.” Evan respectfully replied.
…
8 PM.
Elijah hosted the dinner on a yacht. Maddox brought his team, while Sivin couldn’t make it due to his wife’s illness. Orion happened to be available and joined for the meal. The large round table could accommodate twenty people, but even with a dozen people, it wouldn’t be crowded. The dishes were as exquisite as a royal feast, made from various precious ingredients. The entire private room was filled with fragrant aromas.
Even though Freya had her concerns, in this setting, she had to entertain gracefully and greet everyone with a smile. Kai had recovered so quickly, and these people had truly been a great help. Today’s dinner was a genuine thank you.
According to Maddox, “It’s nothing, not worth mentioning.”
But Freya felt the gratitude from everyone, “For so many days, you all couldn’t eat well or rest properly, constantly immersed in the research lab. I’ve seen all your hard work, and I truly appreciate the help you’ve given.”
Freya raised her glass to toast them, but Maddox declined, and everyone stood up. They were hesitant to accept Freya’s toast. After all, Elijah was present. But Freya boldly raised her glass and downed it. So, everyone followed suit.
Elijah wasn’t one to be ungrateful. When others helped, he wasn’t stingy either. Each person in the room received $100, 000. At first, they hesitated to accept, but Maddox persuaded them to do so because he knew it was Elijah and Freya’s heartfelt gratitude.
Orion felt a bit out of place; he hadn’t done much to help. He was just here for a free meal. So he quietly slipped out. He stood on the deck to get some fresh air. Elijah had reserved the entire yacht restaurant, so there was no one around. It was quiet. The wind blew, and it was a bit chilly. When Orion turned to go back, he saw–
