Freya’s words didn’t ease Elijah’s worries. Although Freya didn’t misunderstand and she believed in him, Elijah became even more determined to kill the secretary. He had never been so crazy, so desperate to take someone’s life. It was the first time he had wanted to commit murder, regardless of the consequences.
“I will do my best to find a cure.” Said Freya.
Elijah replied in a deep tone, “Hmm.”
Despite the lack of communication, they both understood each other’s thoughts.
…
Freya looked out the window, her arm sliding weakly down and resting on her lap. The scenery outside quickly passed by as the car smoothly drove along. Her inner turmoil was far from calm. It surged like turbulent waves, relentlessly pounding her heart.
The car came to a stop. Freya collected her thoughts, determined, composed, and calm, ready to handle whatever was happening now. She knew that Elijah would take care of the secretary. She just needed to find out what virus was inside this dog’s body. The best place to examine the virus would probably be HY Research Center, the top research institute in the country.
She didn’t know if this virus was contagious, so she asked the driver to wait in the car while she went in to negotiate. “I would like to see the director of your research institute. Please help me get in touch with them or give me a contact number.” The receptionist glanced at her, avoiding attention due to her scars, so she was dressed more conservatively. Plus, she was still in her postpartum recovery period, so she didn’t look normal in appearance.
The receptionist politely replied, “I’m sorry, our director is not available to meet just anyone.”
Freya took out her work ID from the Mede Research Center, as well as her license as a chief physician. “I am a doctor and a researcher. I am looking for your director because I have important matters to discuss.”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t disclose that information to you.”
The receptionist was rigid and seemed to look down on her. “Are these credentials of yours even real? With such a high status, why do you need to ask for our director at the front desk?”
Freya frowned, surprised by the receptionist’s attitude. She reluctantly took out her phone and hesitated for a moment when she thought about who to call, Sivin or Orion. Both of them should be able to find someone to contact the director. However, her brief hesitation was seen by the receptionist as an act.
“What are you hesitating about? If you know someone, why don’t you just make a call?”
Freya looked up, her gaze sharp and icy. “You are at the front desk, and your job is to serve everyone who comes here. What kind of attitude is this? Do you think you’re superior? But where exactly are you superior?”
She was furious; the reception work of such a big research institute was utterly disappointing.
The receptionist’s face turned ugly when she was yelled at, “Who do you think you are? Do you think anyone can see our director? Take a good look at yourself in the mirror! Who do you think you are?!”
Freya was shocked. The receptionist’s character was so bad that she couldn’t help but curse.
“Freya?” Sivin came to see the director. It was mainly because of the incident with the research report before. The deputy director had already paid the price. Freya was also implicated because of it. Sivin came here, hoping that the director could continue researching with that hard-earned research report, creating our own heart and benefiting the people domestically.
Regarding this matter, the director agreed with Sivin. At the same time, he blamed himself for not noticing the deputy director’s abnormality, which led to a disaster. After their conversation, the director personally saw Sivin off, but unexpectedly ran into Freya in the lobby. Sivin knew about Freya’s physical condition and hurried over to express concern, “Why are you out? You should be resting at home.”
Freya sighed helplessly, “There’s something I need to take care of.”
“What is it? Do you need my help?” Sivin asked.
Freya smiled bitterly, “I do need help, actually.”
“Tell me, whatever it is, as long as I can do it, I will.” Sivin felt indebted to Freya. So he genuinely meant what he said.
Freya said, “I have a dog that might have an unknown virus. I need to use the equipment and personnel at the research institute. This matter is very urgent for me.”
Sivin had never seen Freya so anxious before and said, “This matter is not difficult.”
He turned to look at the director and said, “It’s her, the one who took out the research data from Mede. Because our data was leaked, she was also caught. It wasn’t her husband, Elijah Silverton, who has a wide network and strong methods. She might not be able to come back yet.”
“What?” The director was surprised and admiring. He reached out his hand, “So it’s you. It’s because of our negligence that the data was leaked and you were caught. I’m truly sorry.”
The director firmly shook Freya’s hand, “You and your husband are truly kind-hearted people. If it wasn’t for Mr Silverton’s push, that conference wouldn’t have taken place in our country.”
At the same time, the director expressed his attitude, “From now on, your matters are the institute’s matters. Just say the word.”
Seeing the director, Freya felt that the research institute hadn’t deteriorated to a hopeless state.
She whispered softly, “Thank you.”
“It’s my pleasure. We owe you.” The director said.
The receptionist next to them, seeing this scene, realized that Freya not only came back from Mede, but also had a close relationship with Elijah. She hurriedly apologized.
“I misunderstood you earlier. So you really did come back from Mede!”
Freya glanced at her but didn’t dwell on it. Desperate to quickly identify the virus in the dog’s body, she instructed the driver to bring the dog inside, cautioning, “Try not to have direct contact with it. I’m not sure if the virus is contagious.”
As they made their way to the laboratory, Freya’s phone rang. It was Elowen calling, informing her that Kai had a fever.
Freya’s heart clenched in pain, but she tried to remain calm. “I see.”
“When are you coming back?” Elowen asked, feeling uncertain and worried about Kai’s recurring rashes and fever. The situation seemed dangerous.
“I’ll be back soon.” She hung up the phone and tightly held Sivin’s hand. “Dr Peters, please help me with this.”
Sivin sensed the seriousness of the situation; otherwise, Freya wouldn’t have been so serious.
“You can count on me this time. I will make sure it gets done.”
“Our research center will assist as well.” The director also expressed his support.
“Help me identify the virus carried by this dog.”
“Leave it to us.”
“I will be here the whole time. I’ll call you as soon as there’s progress.” Sivin added.
Freya nodded, expressing her gratitude.
…
After leaving the research institute, she rushed back home. On the way, she urged the driver to go faster. She was constantly urging him on. She hurriedly arrived home, and as soon as she opened the door, she saw Elowen angrily berating someone, “Who do you think you are, a mere secretary? What right do you have? Asking us to move out?!”
