“Yes, I did.” Linda replied.
Freya nodded. She got up from the couch, holding Kai in her arms, and headed back to the room.
Linda walked over and offered, “Let me hold him for you.”
“It’s fine.” Freya replied.
Linda didn’t continue speaking and asked, “Should I tidy up the things on the table?”
Freya turned back to glance at them. She wasn’t sure if Dina had brought them herself or if Elijah had instructed her to. Regardless of the reason, it was better to leave them for now, just to be safe.
“For now, let’s leave them be.” Freya said.
“I think they’re all good things for your health. You need to take care of yourself now, and if Dina brought them, it must be at Mr Silverton’s request. It would be a shame to let them go to waste,” Linda insisted.
“I can’t indulge too much right now. It might cause me to get overheated.” Freya gently explained to Linda. “Let’s just leave them for now.”
“Alright, I’ll leave them be.” Linda said and went to tidy up.
Freya returned to her room.
Kai usually took his afternoon nap at this time. He was getting a bit sleepy now. Freya rocked and patted him, and soon he fell asleep. Although Kai wasn’t extremely close to Freya, he didn’t reject her either. In fact, he seemed curious about her. After all, there was suddenly someone new in the house. And she treated him well.
After putting Kai to sleep, Freya also felt a bit tired. Her body was severely weakened. Feeling drowsy, she didn’t know how much time had passed.
After a while, the bedroom door was pushed open. She opened her eyes and saw Elowen. Becoming more alert, she sat up on the bed and whispered, “Did you see him?”
“No,” Elowen replied, careful not to wake Kai. She whispered to Freya, “That house has been bought.”
“What?” surprised, Freya exclaimed. “I remember that the house was supposed to be for you. How could it be sold?”
“I left all the things your dad left for me at home. When I came here, I only brought some clothes,” Elowen said. “We misjudged him.”
Elowen looked disappointed. “He must have taken everything that your dad left for me.”
Freya fell into deep thought.
Why would Zane sell the things in the house? And where did he go? How could he just disappear like that? Freya had no idea what happened to Zane.
“I’m going out for a bit,” Freya said, getting up.
Elowen grabbed her. “If the things are gone, they’re gone. What about your recovery? Where are you going to go?”
“I’m worried about him getting into trouble, Mom. The company has gone bankrupt, did you know?” Freya looked at Elowen.
Elowen had been clueless all this time. Ever since Elijah assigned her to take care of Kai here, she hadn’t gone back. She usually stayed at home, occasionally taking Kai out to play, but never going far or interacting with many people, so she had no idea.
“How did this happen?”
“It’s a long story, not something that can be explained in a few words,” Freya didn’t go into detail.
If Luna’s whereabouts were unclear and Zane was also missing, things could really go wrong.
“But where can you go to find him? Elijah isn’t here. Maybe you should give him a call…” Elowen suggested.
Freya knew Elowen was concerned about her, but Elijah had enough on his plate already. Calling him might distract him. Just like the things Dina brought, she didn’t trust them, so she didn’t dare to eat them and had Linda put them away for now. She could call Elijah and ask if he had instructed Dina. Ultimately, she didn’t want him worrying about things at home while he was out.
“I can’t rely on him for everything.” Otherwise, Dina’s words would come true, and she would only burden Elijah.
“Then who can you turn to?”
“I’ll go to the police station.” Freya said.
“Alright, I’ll go with you.” Elowen wasn’t convinced.
“Elijah has arranged for security guards. They follow us discreetly when we go out,” Freya explained.
“Then wear more layers.” Elowen insisted.
Freya complied, dressing warmly. Elowen even gave her a hat to protect her from the wind.
“Put on a scarf too!” Elowen wrapped it around her. “This way, the wind won’t blow on your neck.”
Freya knew that Elowen’s actions were also meant to hide the scars on her neck and face.
“Come back as soon as possible.” Elowen urged.
Freya nodded. She left the house and hailed a taxi to go to the police station. She thought the driver had gone to buy a dog, so she didn’t call for one.
Later, she arrived at the police station. The reception officer asked, “Missing person report?”
“Yes,” Freya answered.
“How long?” the police officer asked while jotting down notes.
“Two days,” Freya answered. She wasn’t exactly sure, but it seemed like a missing person could be reported after 48 hours. So she said that.
“Details of the missing person,” the officer requested.
Freya provided all the information she knew about Zane.
“Leave your phone number, and we will contact you immediately if we have any updates.”
“Okay.” Freya agreed. She left her phone number.
As she walked out of the police station, she stood at the entrance, placing her hopes on the police. Evan had been in a car accident, and she had no one else to turn to. This was her only option. She stood by the roadside and hailed a taxi. When she turned her head casually, she noticed someone watching her from a distance. But when she looked over, the person quickly hid behind a pine tree. Freya walked over, but she didn’t see anyone. She was a bit puzzled. Could it be her imagination?
At that moment, a taxi arrived. She flagged it down and got in. Freya went straight home without lingering outside. When the car arrived, she got out and was about to enter the residential complex when she heard a noise. She turned around and saw two tall men dressed in black, apprehending a suspicious person wearing a duckbill hat. As Freya walked over. The two men immediately said, “This person has been following you all the way.”
Freya’s eyebrows raised. So, she wasn’t imagining things outside the police station. There really was someone following her. She became even more curious about who was tracking her.
“Lift up his head,” Freya said.
The bodyguard removed the man’s hat and lifted his face. Freya didn’t recognize him.
“Ask him who sent him.” Freya said.
“Yes,” the bodyguard replied without hesitation and threw a punch at the man’s abdomen.
“Ugh…”
The man fell to the ground, clutching his stomach, curling up and trembling.
Freya asked coldly, “Who sent you to track me?”
“I was just doing it for the money,” the man still refused to talk.
After a few punches and kicks, the man finally confessed. He wasn’t a tough guy.
“We used to be street thugs, and one day, he found us and asked us to do things for him. He paid us generously, but we didn’t know who he was or what he looked like. He always wore a mask, and we didn’t even know if he was a man or a woman. There were five or six of us doing his bidding, as long as he paid well, we were willing to do anything for him.”
“How can we contact him?” the bodyguard asked.
“I have his phone number,” the man said.
The bodyguard found a phone in his pocket and handed it to him. “Call him.”
The man didn’t want to get beaten up again, so he dialed the number and it connected soon.
