“Who is this?” she asked, her voice filled with uncertainty.
There was a moment of silence on the other end before a cold chuckle came through. “You’ve already forgotten me so quickly?”
Freya found the voice somewhat familiar. “Are you Ronan?” She couldn’t be completely sure at the moment because Ronan’s voice sounded off.
“I caught a little cold.” He replied.
“Oh? You’re getting married? Who are you marrying? I thought you said you didn’t have a girlfriend?” Ronan suddenly mentioned his wedding, which surprised her. “Congratulations! I will definitely send you a wedding gift, don’t worry.”
“You have to come to the wedding.” Ronan said with a hint of command in his voice.
Freya paused for a moment. “I’m sorry, but I don’t have the time to go.”
She looked at her son, reaching out to tousle Kai’s head. With Elijah not around and her still in her postpartum recovery, it wasn’t convenient for her to leave the house. Besides, Ronan was still in Stratos City, which was too far away. If he had been closer, she might have considered it.
“So, you don’t even consider me a friend?” Ronan sounded clearly angry, his words filled with fiery resentment. “Fine, I get it now. You never saw me as a friend, you only ever used me, didn’t you?”
Freya furrowed her brows, not understanding why Ronan would suddenly be so angry.
“You’re still upset about what happened last time…”
“Enough, don’t say another word. Pretend this call never happened, and that I never invited you. We’re done, water under the bridge!” He hung up immediately.
The beeping sound came from the other end. Freya sighed and put down the phone.
“What’s wrong?” Elowen asked.
“Nothing.”
She truly didn’t care. In life, one would encounter many people, but not everyone would stay until the end. She composed herself and called Zane. But Zane’s phone was off. It was the same as last time. Freya didn’t know how he was doing and she was worried.
“Mom, I want to see Zane…”
“You’re still in your postpartum recovery,” Elowen absolutely refused to let her go out. “You didn’t take good care of yourself during your last recovery. This time, if you don’t take care of yourself properly and end up with lingering health issues, you’ll have to suffer when you’re older.”
Before Freya could say anything, Elowen sighed. “You’re only worried about him, right? I’ll go take a look for you.”
Freya leaned into Elowen’s arms, acting spoiled. “Thank you, Mom.”
“You’re…” Elowen seemed helpless with her.
“By the way, Mom, has Luna contacted you?”
Elowen’s face darkened. “You just came back, and within a day, you’re asking this and that. Can’t you just relax and rest at home?”
Freya obediently kept quiet.
“Alright, I’ll go now.” Elowen said as she got up.
“When you see him, bring him back.” Freya said. She needed to ask Luna’s whereabouts from Zane. She didn’t know if Zane had found Luna or not.
Elowen agreed and left, just as Dina arrived at the door, carrying something in her hands.
She was about to ring the doorbell. When she saw Elowen opening the door, Dina immediately said, “I’m here to deliver something, as instructed by Mr Silverton.”
Elowen smiled. “Come on in!”
Dina walked in, and Freya noticed her. The faint smile that had been playing on Freya’s lips as she teased Kai slowly disappeared.
“Are you feeling better?” Dina asked, looking genuinely concerned.
Freya looked at her but didn’t respond.
Dina explained, “We’re short-handed over here, so Mr Silverton had me come back.”
It seemed like she was explaining it to Freya. But if Elijah hadn’t mentioned it, Freya might have fallen for it. Dina thought Freya probably fell into her trap.
Maybe she would question Elijah about why he brought her back. And misunderstandings would arise from there.
“These are the things Mr Silverton asked me to buy.” Dina said, placing the items on the table.
Freya glanced at them and said, “I see.”
“Well, take good rest.”
After saying that, Dina turned to leave. When she reached the door, she stopped and turned back to face Freya. “Actually, you only cause trouble for Mr Silverton.”
Freya calmly asked, “And then?”
“In terms of work, I believe I’m much better than you. In life, I think I won’t be worse than you either. I won’t create so many problems that make Mr Silverton worry so much.”
Freya stared at her, her eyes growing darker. Dina was able to stay by Elijah’s side, so she must have something exceptional about her. But this time, it seemed like she was no longer hiding her true intentions. She was speaking so straightforwardly. Freya thought it was good. It saved her from pretending every day and being stabbed in the back.
“I will fulfill my role and assist Mr Silverton, alleviating his work pressure.”
Dina raised her head and stood tall. At this moment, she no longer seemed like a secretary should. Instead, she seemed to be declaring her own rights to Freya. There was a sense of stealing the spotlight. Originally, Freya didn’t want to argue with her. But Dina seemed unwilling to stay quiet.
“I will talk to Elijah and give you a raise, don’t worry.” Freya said calmly.
Dina’s expression slightly darkened since Freya was humiliating her with money.
“Mr Silverton’s treatment towards me is already the best.” Dina said.
“Oh, he’s been good to you.” Freya replied.
Dina boasted, “Of course.”
“Now that your things have been delivered, you can leave,” Freya said, not wanting to waste any more time with her.
Dina knew she was being dismissed and smiled, “I won’t disturb your rest. If Mr Silverton has any other instructions, I’ll come back. For now, I’ll take my leave.”
With that, she turned and opened the door. Freya’s expression gradually darkened. Dina’s words made her uncomfortable. They made her cautious. Did this woman not just have a secret crush, but wanted to brazenly steal him away?
“Puppy,” Kai pulled on Freya’s hand.
Freya’s gaze shifted to her son, and her expression softened.
“You want a puppy?” Freya asked softly.
Kai nodded vigorously.
Freya called out, “Linda.”
Linda quickly came out from inside the house. “Yes, ma’am?”
“Go call the driver to buy a small, gentle, healthy puppy that’s suitable for us to keep at home.”
“Alright.” Linda walked out and called the driver, “You go buy a dog…”
Dina, who hadn’t gone far, overheard and turned back to look at Linda. She asked, “Who wants a dog?”
“The madam,” Linda replied.
“Leave this matter to me. You guys wouldn’t understand the different breeds of dogs, and might end up getting an unsuitable one.” Dina said.
Linda thought that Dina had always been efficient in her work, so she agreed, “Alright, I’ll leave it to you then.”
Dina smiled and continued walking away. But as she turned, the smile on her face vanished. In its place was a cold expression. Dina quickly thought of something and called out to Linda.
“Wait.”
Linda asked, “Is there something else?”
Dina walked up to her and whispered, “Don’t tell anyone about the dog-buying matter.”
Linda was puzzled and asked, “Why? Including Mrs Silverton?”
Dina nodded, “Yes, I just feel that such a small matter doesn’t need to be publicized.”
Linda was still a little confused but nodded in agreement. She returned to the house.
Freya asked, “Did you inform the driver?”
