The sudden appearance of a person interrupted Elijah’s thoughts.
“Stop.”
The person who ran out was a patient from the hospital, quickly captured and taken back by the doctors and staff.
Elijah first went to interrogate those involved in Freya’s surgery. Sivin was stubborn, but those who helped him might not be as resolute. In this world driven by self-interest, Elijah didn’t believe that those people would sacrifice their own interests to protect Sivin.
Evan led him to a room. All the doctors and medical staff who participated in Freya’s surgery were gathered here. Instead of immediately threatening them, Elijah presented a highly appealing incentive. “I’ve heard that the highest-ranking among you is the attending physician. If anyone is willing to disclose Freya’s whereabouts, I will grant them a position as an attending physician at the military hospital.”
Although they were all attending physicians, the status and ranking of hospitals varied. Being an attending physician at the military hospital was equivalent to being the director at Harmony & Mercy Hospital, and the military hospital had even greater potential for growth. This incentive, it had to be said, was very tempting. Everyone’s minds began to stir. They were all afraid that someone would speak up before them and reap the benefits. Everyone was eager to give it a try.
“I’ll speak up,” suddenly a young man stood up.
He was Sivin’ student. And he had the lowest rank among them. He was still an intern. As soon as he spoke, everyone’s gaze turned towards him. Their words were filled with reproach, accusing him of betrayal and lack of loyalty, but in reality, they were just jealous that he had acted before them.
Elijah wasn’t surprised, as if he had expected it. What surprised him was that they didn’t seem to struggle with their conscience at all, readily betraying their old allegiance so quickly. Indeed, in the face of self-interest, all those promises and commitments were just empty words. Only the eternal truth of self-interest remained unchanged.
“Go ahead,” Elijah sat on a nearby chair, casually crossing his legs, his gaze falling lightly on the young doctor who had come forward. Although he knew that someone would step forward, driven by self-interest, people who immediately betrayed their old loyalties like this were not likable.
The young doctor kept his head down, too afraid to look at the people on either side of him; they were staring at him with eyes that could cut like a knife.
“Freya didn’t die. Dr Peters used the body of a woman who died in a fire as a substitute.” he confessed.
“Where is she now?” Elijah asked.
The young doctor looked up, shaking his head forcefully. “I don’t know. Dr Peters told us to leave the operating room, and we haven’t seen her since. We have no idea how she was taken out or where she was taken.”
Elijah thought he knew more than that. His face turned slightly cold.
“And none of you know either?” His gaze scanned the row of people with icy indifference.
Everyone kept their heads down. They only knew that Freya didn’t die. Sivin took care of where she went, and no one knew. Elijah was dissatisfied with such an answer. Sivin knew, but his lips were sealed. It wouldn’t be easy to force him to talk.
Just as the situation reached a deadlock, Elijah’s phone rang.
“I’m waiting for you at Pier 7.” A message from Calista came through.
Whenever it came to Freya, Elijah could never stay calm. Perhaps he was just too eager to know where Freya was.
“Bring Thorne out,” he ordered.
“Um…”
The young doctor from earlier reminded Elijah to fulfill his promise. Elijah gave him a cold glance. He immediately lowered his head.
“Release everyone and make arrangements for him.”
“Understood.” Replied Evan.
“You can go now,” Evan said, walking up to the young doctor. “I will take you to the general hospital, but whether you can stay there long-term depends on your abilities.”
Even if he went there, he wouldn’t last long if he didn’t have the skills.
Soon, Evan brought Thorne out, gagged and blindfolded, and put him in the car, heading to Pier 7. When they arrived, Calista was already there. She was sweating profusely, her palms cold with nervousness.
Had Elijah’s arrival meant that he believed she knew where Freya was?
“If you release Thorne, I’ll tell you where Freya is.” Calista desperately tried to steady her voice.
But Elijah could still sense the tension and unease in her tone.
