“Did you prepare all this in advance?” Xander exclaimed, belatedly surprised.
Now with a clear understanding, Xander no longer feared any tricks Jack might pull. His tone became cheerful, “I never expected the old master to be so heartless. He even mentioned taking back the management rights.”
Elijah remained expressionless, not finding joy in the fact that he had a contingency plan and wouldn’t be easily threatened. More disappointment than relief filled him. Sensing his troubled emotions, Freya took the initiative to hold his hand and whispered, “I won’t leave you.”
Elijah, in response, lowered his gaze and embraced her.
Xander tactfully exited the office, closing the door behind him, instructing his secretary not to allow any interruptions. The secretary hesitated before catching up with Xander, “Could this threaten Mr Silverton? The old master was not pleased.”
Xander patted her shoulder reassuringly, “Don’t worry, let’s focus on our tasks. Mr Silverton will handle the rest himself. We shouldn’t speculate or spread rumors within the company to avoid causing unnecessary panic.”
“My mistake.”
“Alright, get back to work. I need to attend to my tasks as well.”
“Xander…”
“Hmm?”
Xander turned around.
The secretary smiled, “Nothing, I’ll get back to work.”
Xander and she had been partners for years, and he trusted her loyalty to Elijah.
In the office, Freya tilted her head, “Let’s go home.”
Elijah nodded.
They returned to the Stone family home. Kai was awake and Elowen was playing with him in the living room, teasing him with toys.
“Mom.”
Elowen was focused entirely on the child and didn’t notice that anyone had arrived. Freya called out to get her attention, but when she saw Elijah, her smile stiffened slightly. Freya whispered to Elijah, “Let me explain to my mom. You can stay in the living room for a bit. Kai’s still awake.”
Elijah nodded.
“Mom.” Freya walked over and took Elowen’s hand, “I need to talk to you. Please come with me.”
Elowen knew what her daughter wanted to talk about. She had seen the events on the stairs earlier and had some understanding of what had happened. Now that Freya and Elijah were here together, she already had an idea of what was going on.
“You don’t need to go anywhere,” Elowen said, glancing at her daughter. “We can talk here.”
Freya felt anxious. Elowen didn’t seem to have a good impression of Elijah. Would she say something hurtful?
“Kai is young and needs a home and the love of his parents. This little guy has had a hard life since he was born. If you two can be together, I would be happy. After all, you already have a child together, and I had many reservations about this before, but I’ll let it go for Kai’s sake. However, if you decide to be together, you must make a commitment to trust each other. Time is getting late, so I’ll go start dinner. You can stay in the living room with Kai.”
With those words, Elowen walked towards the kitchen.
Freya was taken aback by what her mother had said. She walked over and hugged her from behind, “Thank you, Mom.”
Elowen smiled and patted her hand, “Don’t be silly, you don’t need to be so polite with me. As your mother, I only want what’s best for you.”
She leaned in and whispered in Freya’s ear, “I’m not blind. I see how you two are together…”
Freya felt embarrassed and let out a small giggle, “Mom.”
“Alright, alright, I won’t say anything more,” Elowen said with a chuckle. “Just be happy, that’s all I care about.”
Freya emphasized, “Mom, you can rest assured.”
Elowen laughed and said, “Okay, I need to start cooking dinner.”
Freya let go of her mother and turned around to walk towards the couch. Elijah didn’t pick up Kai, he sat on the side, looking down at the child. Kai’s big round eyes were wide open, blinking at him curiously. He was curious and didn’t cry or fuss, just lying there quietly. Elijah also looked down at him. Freya walked over with a glass of water and asked, “What are you looking at?”
Elijah didn’t look up but answered indirectly, “Do you want to continue practicing medicine or learn business?”
Freya sat down on the couch and her gaze fell lightly on Kai’s face. Her dream was to become an outstanding doctor. Although Zane Stone was watching the company now and he was motivated to work hard, she still couldn’t let go completely. Zane Stone had some clever ideas but he wasn’t yet capable of handling everything alone.
Elijah seemed to perceive her thoughts. “I can help you with that.”
Freya took a book from the table and showed it to him, “I’m already learning. Of course, if you want to share your experiences as a successful person, I would be happy to listen.”
Elijah smiled and reached out to pinch her cheek playfully, “Naughty.”
Freya pushed him away playfully, “You pinched too hard.”
The two of them chatted and laughed, and Elijah’s mood improved significantly. He could not remember the last time he had enjoyed such a relaxed and happy moment. He liked this feeling of being at home. He held Freya’s hand and said, “Let’s go get our marriage certificate.”
Both the marriage and divorce certificates had been arranged through Jack Silverton’s connections before, but he thought those were meaningless. They needed to go together to make it more serious.
Freya agreed promptly, “Sure, but it’s already late today, so we can’t go now. Let’s go tomorrow.”
Elijah nodded.
Elowen had cooked the meal and placed it on the dining table, calling them to come and eat. Freya called Zane Stone to ask if he was coming back for dinner.
However, Zane sounded very nervous, “Oh, well, I, I can’t come back. I have a lot of things to do.”
Freya frowned slightly and nodded, but didn’t pursue it, but her heart held a suspicion.
Was he hiding something from her?
Otherwise, why was he so flustered?
“What’s wrong?” Elijah had come up behind her and asked.
She looked back at him and said, “I feel like Zane is up to something.”
“I’ll ask Xander to check him out for you,” Elijah said, taking out his phone to make a call.
Freya felt embarrassed and said, “Thank you.”
Elijah raised his hand and lightly brushed her nose, “We don’t distinguish between each other and ourselves.”
Freya smiled.
Forgetting that Elowen was still there, she hugged his waist and looked up at him with a coquettish expression, joking, “Does that mean your money is mine?”
Elijah was helpless and amused, “Of course.”
Freya blinked her eyes, “Then I’m a wealthy woman.”
“You’re a wealthy woman,” Elijah said with a smile.
Elowen looked over at them from the dining table, a smile curling up on her lips. She was pleased that her daughter could finally live a happy life, and Kai also had a family.
“Hurry up and come over here,” Elowen urged in a low voice, afraid that the food would get cold if they didn’t eat it quickly.
Elijah said, “Call me as soon as you get the information on Zane Stone.”
The other party agreed and hung up. He and Freya walked over together.
Because Kai was sleeping, they were able to sit down and eat.
“I don’t know what your preferences are, so I just made some things randomly. Don’t hesitate to eat,” Elowen said as she handed Elijah some food and poured him some soup.
Perhaps it was because of the mother-in-law’s love for her son-in-law that she was more delighted than ever before. Elijah was not uncomfortable with this. Today’s atmosphere actually gave him a sense of belonging that he had not felt in a long time.
“After Freya and I apply for the marriage certificate, you can help us pick a good day for the wedding. I want to give her a wedding,” he said as a form of confession to Freya and an acknowledgement and affirmation of their relationship.
Elowen was surprised that he mentioned this. Their previous marriage was not something either of them desired, but now that they have come together, it is only fitting to have a proper ceremony. She smiled and nodded with great significance, “I will definitely choose a good day for you.”
“Thank you.” Elijah said.
“We’re all family now,” Elowen said with great happiness. Elijah’s ability to think of Freya so thoroughly showed that he truly cared about her.
Although their beginning was not beautiful, their ending was perfect. With a child, they were a happy family of three.
After dinner, Elijah asked, “Can I stay?”
Before Elowen could answer, Freya quickly said, “No.” “Since we’re applying for the marriage certificate and getting married, let’s wait until after the wedding before you bring Kai back to your place.”
She felt embarrassed because Elowen was there.
Elowen got up to clear the dishes, “You two can decide for yourself whether or not he stays. I won’t intervene in your decisions.”
After saying that, she turned around with the bowl in her hands and walked towards the kitchen.
Freya pulled Elijah, “I’ll see you off.”
Elijah frowned, “Are you afraid I’ll stay?”
Freya avoided his gaze, “Grandpa had already helped us get a divorce certificate, so we’re not married yet.”
“That’s just an excuse.” Elijah hooked her into his arms, knowing that she was just shy and didn’t expose her, “Should we go somewhere for a walk?”
Freya nodded and said, “Okay.”
There weren’t any nice places to walk nearby, so they drove to the nearby riverside. After getting out of the car, Freya linked arms with Elijah and walked leisurely on the cobblestone path along the riverbank, with lush greenery on both sides. The weather was a bit hot, but occasionally a breeze blew, making it feel very refreshing.
Freya rested her face on his arm and said, “I like this feeling.”
Walking with the person she likes on a quiet path. Elijah touched the top of her head and his lips curved upwards. As they walked, Freya saw a familiar figure looking around nervously as if afraid of being seen.
Why was he here?
She let go of Elijah and walked towards him.
Just then, the person got into the car.
“What are you looking at?” Elijah asked.
