“That night it snowed, and the roads were too slippery for the car to move. I had to carry Ayaan to the clinic, but the doctor told me he was trapped and couldn’t come. He asked me to find another hospital…”
“It was especially cold that day, and when I arrived at the hospital, Ayaan only had half a life left.” Ranita paused and looked at Brendon before changing her tone. “Later on, Dr. Pearson came, and I never had to take him to the clinic in the middle of the night again. That’s why Ayaan likes Dr. Pearson so much.”
Steve had been with Ranita for three years, doing more than Brendon ever did. Brendon felt guilty as he said, “Ranita, I’m sorry.”
“The past is in the past; you don’t have to apologize,” she replied.
“No! In future I will love you well and cherish you; I will also take up my responsibility as a father and educate Ayaan well.” Brendon pursed his lips before lowering his voice, “I’ll go to Kurima tomorrow; I’ll handle Shannon’s situation.”
“Ranita, no matter who you used to like before doesn’t matter now because all that matters is that you like me!”
As Ranita saw his deep gaze upon her, she suddenly felt embarrassed, “What are you talking about? Who likes you?”
“You said it yourself! Don’t deny it!”
“I already said it, I was drunk!” Ranita’s voice rose due to her excitement, instantly drawing many curious gazes. Even Ayaan furrowed his brows and hummed, “Mommy, what’s wrong?”
“Ayaan, close your eyes and rest.” After saying that, Ranita glared at Brendon, and he could only stay silent.
After waiting for a while, Brendon went to get the test results. He had just left when the phone that was pressed on top of the medical records started ringing.
Ranita casually picked it up and answered, “Hello!”
“Ranita? Why is it you?” The voice sounded surprised and pretentious, making Ranita frown involuntarily. She responded in a cold tone, “Brendon stepped away, call back later.”
“Ranita, wait.” Shannon’s voice suddenly turned sharp. “Why are you still with Brendon at this late hour?”
“I thought I made it clear to you? If you dare to pester him again, you’ll regret it.”
Compared to her cloying and sickening demeanor, Shannon revealing her true nature made Ranita feel more calm.
“Shannon, tell all of this to Brendon yourself. I don’t want to involve myself between the two of you!”
Saying that, Ranita saw Brendon coming back and handed him the phone. “Sorry, wrong call.”
Brendon didn’t say anything, he took the phone and calmly asked, “Shannon, it’s late, what’s the matter?”
“Brendon, I couldn’t sleep and I missed you so much, so I couldn’t help but call you!” Shannon’s voice immediately returned to its cloying and aggrieved tone. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you this late.”
“It’s just that I didn’t expect you to be with Ranita this late.”
Shannon’s voice choked up immediately. “Brendon, I… I feel so sad… and jealous. I don’t want you to get so close to her, can you?”
Being close enough, Ranita vaguely heard a bit of the conversation.
The woman lowered her eyes, her heart feeling sour and swollen.
Ranita didn’t dare to look at Brendon too much, but couldn’t help but anticipate what he would say. The next second, Brendon’s deep voice sounded, “Shannon, I’m a bit busy right now. Let’s talk about it when I return to Kurima.”
Brendon hung up the phone.
Ayaan’s fever wasn’t subsiding, and the doctor suggested keeping him in the hospital for observation, so they arranged him in a ward. Soon after, Brendon’s phone rang again. The man furrowed his brows and looked apologetically at Ranita. “Ranita, I need to go back to Kurima…”
Ranita’s heart sank.
