Early the morning on Saturday I walked in quietly into Mr Raphael residence, I don’t want Mrs Raphael naggings neither do I want her to see any excuse to talk ill towards mother.
“Good morning ma’ I greeted, on entering the sitting room seeing her seated on the sofa going through a magazine.
“Morning…’ she mumbled, not taking her eyes off the book she was reading.
I noticed no one was in, I breath a sigh of relief because I was not yet ready to see Lexy neither am I ready to face Lisa his sister this beautiful morning.
“…. Go and start your work’ she spoke turning another page of the magazine,”… I don’t want to see you idle.
‘Yes ma’ I walked towards the kitchen to do the dishes.
“What are you doing here?” Lisa loud voice came out full of irritation.
“Good morning to you too Miss lisa” I turned back to continue washing.
“Mum called her back”, Lexy said walking past me, to take some fruits from the fridge.
“Mum really did?” Lisa asked in disbelief.
“Yeah, isn’t that what she is meant to be?” Lexy looked at me then smirked at his sister.
That statement pierced through my heart, I blinked not to cry in their presence.
“Continue your work, they did not pay you to stand”, he sneered and walked away, and I overheard him whisper liar.
Tears welled my eyes blocking my view from seeing the plates I was washing.
“Iam doing this for mummy”, I kept chanting in my head.
…… Just for mummy.
… the insults and mockeries just for mummy.
“I will not be here if not because of mummy”, those words kept ringing in my head, kept me going, kept me keeping my anger and vulnerability in check.
I quickly finish up the dishes and started cleaning everywhere in the house.
It was noon when i was done for the day I was dead tired, I just finished the laundry when I heard different voices coming from the sitting room.
‘What’s going on?” I wondered.
Gently walked in and what I saw made me almost die with shame.
My classmates!
They were all seated in the room, hosting and Laughing.
Immediately I opened the door everyone turned and all eyes were on me.
Some looked with surprised, some with mockery.
Anita was there, sitting comfortably on Lexy leg scrolling through his phone.
My God!! I groaned silently wishing I had never open the door in the first place..
She looked up and laughed, “look who we have here”, she grinned wickedly.
The maid!
“Oops! Sorry, the popular maid” she corrected herself. Her lip curved with a mock.
Everyone in the room burst out laughing including Lexy.
Hot tears sting my eyes, waiting for me to blink so the flow can come out effortlessly.
I wished the ground could open so I can sink in.
Maid became my new name from that moment.
