The lead surgeon extended a hand towards Leo, smiling as he said, “The old Mrs. Henley, you should thank this miraculous doctor. He stepped in to save you.”
The old Mrs. Henley’s gaze followed the lead surgeon’s gesture to Leo, and her facial expression first showed surprise, followed by disbelief and disdain. She said, “Doctor, please don’t joke. I know this grandson-in-law of mine too well. He’s probably been hoping for my demise.”
The old Mrs. Henley’s words were within Leo’s expectations, so his expression hardly changed.
“Sophia, Grandma is fine now. Let’s go,” Leo gently tugged on Sophia’s hand.
“Grandma, rest well. We’ll visit you tomorrow,” Sophia said to the old Mrs. Henley.
The old Mrs. Henley merely blinked her eyes, indifferent to Sophia.
After Leo and the others left, Bruno and Fanny also walked out of the intensive care unit.
“Bruno, are you feeling unwell? I noticed that your spirit doesn’t seem to be in good shape,” Fanny inquired with a mix of curiosity and concern.
Bruno was currently not only feeling guilty but also frustrated. He gave Fanny a perfunctory response and walked towards the hospital’s exit.
When Leo and Sophia returned to their Cloud Dream Mountain villa’s bedroom, it was already three in the morning.
“Leo, what’s bothering you? I sense that you’re carrying a heavy burden,” Sophia observed Leo’s unusual demeanor on their way home and couldn’t help asking once they entered the bedroom.
Leo hesitated a bit, unsure whether he should share his thoughts with Sophia.
After some internal debate, he decided to speak up. “Sophia, do you not find the recent car accident rather suspicious?”
“Suspicious?” Sophia was puzzled.
“Grandma mentioned that the car had just been serviced, so how could the brakes suddenly fail? Moreover, this happened precisely when someone was maliciously trying to acquire your company’s shares…”
As the saying goes, desperate times call for desperate measures. Given Bruno’s ruthlessness, even his own grandmother might not be safe. Leo felt compelled to guard against any harm he might inflict on Sophia.
Leo’s words prompted Sophia to ponder the situation. With her sharp wit, she quickly grasped Leo’s underlying message. “Are you suggesting that Grandma’s car accident might be connected to something Bruno is involved in secretly? And that Bruno may have played a part in the attempted acquisition of my company’s shares?”
“I have this suspicion, but I can’t be certain whether it’s Bruno or not. We lack any concrete evidence. It’s just my speculation,” Leo nodded.
“Murdering his own grandmother? Bruno wouldn’t do something so cruel, would he?” Sophia found it hard to believe.
“Sophia, I don’t know if you noticed, but when I was treating your grandmother, Bruno tried to stop me. Furthermore, when your grandmother woke up and mentioned the brake failure, Bruno had a panicked expression. All of these signs indicate that he is connected to the accident,” Leo explained the basis for his deduction.
Sophia carefully thought back to their time in the hospital and realized that Bruno had indeed acted strangely.
“Forget it. Regardless of what Bruno has done, he holds the top spot in your grandmother’s heart. As long as grandmother is fine, let’s rest early,” Sophia decided not to dwell on the matter.
The two lay down on their respective sides of the bed, turned off the lights, and drifted off to sleep.
More than ten minutes passed, and Sophia still couldn’t find sleep. In the darkness, her beautiful eyes remained open as she contemplated something.
“Leo, are you asleep?” Sophia whispered.
Leo, of course, wasn’t asleep either. He replied, “You’re not asleep, so naturally, I can’t sleep.”
This heartwarming exchange prompted Sophia to reach for Leo’s hand. “Leo, I’m still very concerned about the malicious acquisition of our company’s shares. If we don’t handle it well, the company I’ve worked so hard to build will become someone else’s.”
Leo understood that Sophia’s cosmetics company was like her child, built with the help of her grandfather.
When a child is hurt, a mother naturally feels the pain.
Leo tightened his grip on Sophia’s hand and said firmly, “You can rest assured, no matter who wants to meddle with your company, they won’t succeed!”
Feeling Leo’s confidence and support, Sophia’s heart settled somewhat. “Grandma is in the hospital after the accident, so I’m certain the family meeting scheduled for tomorrow won’t happen. I wonder what the people behind the malicious share acquisition will do next.”
“Regardless of their next move, we’ll face it head-on. We won’t be afraid,” Leo reassured.
Leo’s words were like a shot of adrenaline, bringing peace to Sophia’s heart. She turned her body towards Leo, and through the faint light from outside, Leo could see her beautiful face. He also couldn’t ignore the intoxicating scent emanating from Sophia, which tickled his senses.
Suddenly, Sophia spoke in a soft, almost timid voice, “Leo, hold me…”
Leo hesitated for a moment, then reached out and pulled Sophia close into his arms.
Even a powerful woman like Sophia could be sensitive and fragile at times.
Time seemed to stand still at that moment, and everything fell silent. In their embrace, the entire world ceased to exist, leaving only the two entwined together.
It was the first time they had embraced like this in the four years of their marriage.
In Leo’s arms, Sophia felt like a little boat finding refuge in a safe harbor. This unspoken sense of security made her quickly drift into slumber.
As for Leo, while he might be sleepless at this moment, he couldn’t be happier, knowing his beloved was sleeping soundly.
The next day, Leo, who had struggled with insomnia, only managed to get a brief nap before waking up.
Sophia, still asleep, looked serene. She had indeed been very exhausted the previous day.
Leo couldn’t bear to wake her, so he gently moved his hand and carefully got out of bed.
Sophia woke up when Leo was getting dressed.
“Leo, you must not have slept well last night. Why don’t you get some more rest?” Sophia asked softly.
Leo smiled and replied, “My internal clock is acting up; I can’t sleep past a certain point. You go back to sleep, skip your morning run today. I’ll go tell Nora to prepare breakfast.”
Sophia, knowing the importance of maintaining her health, responded, “No, I can’t do that. Daily morning runs are crucial for staying healthy.”
With her strong sense of discipline, Leo knew better than to discourage her. So, he changed into his workout attire as well.
After their morning run and breakfast, Leo drove Sophia to work.
