He reached for his phone to answer the call, but Lyndon Adelaide snatched it away, glancing at the caller ID on the screen.
“Eric Lynd?”
It seemed oddly familiar to Lyndon Adelaide.
Without overthinking, he hung up the call and snapped at Leo, “Your phone is temporarily confiscated until this matter is resolved!”
Inside a dimly lit room within the enforcement bureau, the setting was reminiscent of an interrogation room at a police station. There were three chairs and a table.
Director Victor and Lyndon Adelaide were in charge of the interrogation, and Leo was the one being questioned.
“Kid, you better start telling the truth here. Otherwise, you won’t have an easy time!” Director Victor began with a slightly threatening tone.
Leo maintained his composed expression and replied, “Ask whatever you want to know.”
Director Victor handed over the questioning to Lyndon Adelaide, who grabbed a notebook and proceeded with a series of inquiries:
“What’s your name? Gender? Where did you get the money to purchase the clinic? What deceptive methods did you use to obtain your medical license? Are you selling counterfeit medicine? How much illegal profit have you made?”
Leo responded in a deliberate tone, “You already know my name, and as for gender, I’m sure you can tell unless you’re blind. The money for the clinic is none of your concern. I earned my medical license through proper means. Selling counterfeit medicine is non-existent. And as for illegal profits, may I remind you that the clinic is currently under renovation and not yet open for business?”
Leo’s response infuriated Lyndon Adelaide, leading him to slam his hand on the table in anger. “Kid, what’s with that attitude?”
“Let me tell you the truth. We’ve pretty much figured out your situation. If you’re honest now, we might consider being lenient,” Director Victor adopted a lecturing tone. “Kid, don’t forget you’re a son-in-law to a wealthy family. If this matter escalates, your wife’s family won’t let you off easily. Think it over.”
Leo remained unfazed. “Full confession for leniency, hard resistance for strictness. I’ve thought of a possibility.”
“What possibility?” Director Victor was momentarily confused by Leo’s vague statement.
“Could it be Shirley Habakkuk who reported this?”
Upon hearing Shirley’s name, Director Victor’s eyes flickered briefly. Then he roared, “Who’s this Shirley? Kid, do you think you’re stalling for time? Believe me, I can keep you in here as long as I want!”
“Will you keep me for twenty-four hours?” Leo gazed at Director Victor with a dismissive expression.
Before Director Victor could explode in anger, there was a knock on the door.
Lyndon Adelaide stood up to answer it. A uniformed personnel stood outside, squinted into the room, and whispered to Lyndon Adelaide, “Sergeant Adelaide, we’ve got the situation figured out.”
Lyndon Adelaide’s eyes lit up. He let the subordinate in and then announced loudly, “Give us the details you’ve gathered.”
The subordinate glanced at Director Victor before speaking, “In the courtyard behind the clinic, those guys digging the pond are hooligans from the northern district. Their leader is named Scar, a known troublemaker.”
Lyndon Adelaide’s face showed a playful expression. “Using thugs as labor, he’s more cunning than I thought. What about Scar? Any criminal record? Also, what’s the relationship between him and the clinic’s owner, Leo?”
“He does have a criminal record, though he hasn’t committed any crimes in recent years. As for his connection to the clinic’s owner, it seems like-”
“It seems like what?” Lyndon Adelaide was eager for valuable information.
“That Scar runs a domestic services company named Immaculate Home. He seems to be employed by the clinic.”
“Seems to be? What does ‘seems to be’ mean?” Lyndon Adelaide’s frustration grew. “Go and investigate thoroughly. I don’t need vague answers!”
“Yes, Sergeant!” The subordinate complied and swiftly left the room.
Leo chuckled. “Director Victor, can you let me go now?”
“Wishful thinking! You’re not leaving!” Director Victor was growing impatient. After all, he had received bribes from someone, and this situation needed a conclusion. “Leo, don’t think you’re innocent. Everyone we bring in here isn’t clean. If you don’t confess, don’t blame us for using special means!”
“Oh, are you trying to extract a confession through torture? Feel free to use all your methods,” Leo’s face remained fearless.
As Director Victor contemplated how to handle Leo, the door was forcefully pushed open, revealing a uniformed female staff member.
Annoyed, Director Victor remarked, “Couldn’t you have knocked before coming in? What’s the matter?”
“Director Victor, it’s urgent. I just received a phone call. It was from Director-General Lynd. He inquired about the person in charge of the nameless Chinese medicine clinic. I didn’t give him any information, but from his tone, he sounded extremely angry. He said that if the clinic’s head is treated unfairly, he will, he will remove you from your position…” The female staff member nervously and hurriedly explained.
Upon hearing the name Director-General Lynd, Director Victor’s expression turned frantic.
As the deputy head of the health bureau, how could he not know Director-General Lynd? Clearly, this recently appointed Director-General Lynd was his immediate superior.
Furthermore, Director-General Lynd’s brother, Alfred Lynd, held the position of chief of the public security department and was a significant figure.
In essence, if he managed to offend Director-General Lynd, his professional career would likely come to a grim end.
“How could this be possible? How could the person in charge of a small clinic possibly know Director-General Lynd?” Director Victor’s expression displayed disbelief as he fixed his intense gaze on Leo.
Just as Director Victor contemplated how to deal with Leo, the door was kicked open with a loud crash, startling Director Victor and Lyndon Adelaide.
The interrogation room’s door had been forcefully pushed open, revealing two men with stern expressions.
Director Victor’s heart trembled, and he quickly stood up and greeted, “Director-General Lynd, Director Chesterton!”
Director Victor extended his right hand to shake hands with Director-General Lynd. However, Director-General Lynd didn’t even spare him a glance and walked straight up to Leo, shaking his hand. “Mr. Bloomer, I misjudged you before. If it weren’t for your warning, I might have already met my end! I now fully believe in what you said. Can you save me?”
Leo rose from his seat and gave Director Victor a half-smile. “Director-General Lynd, just a moment ago, Director Victor here told me that running this clinic is illegal and life-threatening. So, I’m afraid I can’t help you.”
Upon hearing this, Director-General Lynd turned abruptly, locking his furious gaze on Director Victor. He berated, “You fool! Director Victor, arbitrarily detaining people and slapping false labels on them-where do you get your authority? If you don’t give me and Mr. Bloomer a satisfactory explanation today, be prepared to face the consequences!”
