Phoebe
With her hands intertwined in mine, we strode across the Pack, giggling sheepishly like two jolly friends.
I couldn’t help but notice the surprised glances a few people shot at me.
It was unusual for me to be happy. Except I wanted to wreak a great deal of havoc.
But today I was happy. Not just happy, I was in my free spirit, gisting, laughing, making silly jokes and acting as if nothing mattered.
As if it was not enough, I was not on solo, which was more strange.
It was an open secret that everyone knew how I loved loneliness and solitude. But seeing me with my half-sister in a happy mood spiked their curiosity.
Strange right?
Though they could sense the consequences of the aftermath of my mood, but they shrugged the feeling off immediately after it came.
It was funny how they thought the advent of my half-sister made me happier and made me a better person.
Fools!
To get what I want, I was ready to do anything. Even if it meant being in a close relationship with that bitch, Esmeralda.
“Wow, I didn’t know the Crescent Moon Pack had such a great history,” Esmeralda’s voice pulled me out of my subconscious.
My face met hers, giving her my attention, “Now you know and I don’t mind telling you more,” I said, backing my speech up with a sweet smile.
My smiles come with a prize.
A huge one.
“Everything here is just strange. It is different from the human world…” Her voice trailed as she stared into space.
Phew!
Here she goes again.
Another sermon on her stupid human world.
That good-for-nothing world that made my father failed me by producing her first.
But I didn’t mind listening. I had to win her trust.
Even if it meant listening to her boring and annoying speech about the human world.
“The human world has a government that rules over us and they are democratically elected. We have the overall ruler, the president, but in some countries that practice monarchy, they have the King or the Queen. Then each ruler has his or her cabinet members, those who will govern and take part in the decision-making process with him…”
“But it is not different from the wolfdom. We also have our Alpha as the overall ruler then his cabinet members are his Luna, his Beta, his Gamma or Delta…” I cut her, getting a little bit pissed at her lame comparison.
“Yes, you mentioned something about that, but it is still different from the human world, very different,”
“In what way?” I inquired, wanting to know more about her thoughts about the wolfdom.
“You said that mates or partners were chosen by the Moon goddess, but in the human world, we choose our partners by ourselves. And you said you all howl at the moon on a full moon night and you worship the Moon goddess. Another thing is hunting, which you all do together… everything is just…”
“Crazy right?” I chimed in, letting out a burst of laughter.
“Yes, it’s crazy,” She whispered, twirling her fingers around her hair. It was something she does that gets me mad, almost making me forget all that I had planned.
I watched how the excitement on her face faded slowly, and her fears surfaced. It was so strong, I could sniff it as it overwhelmed her.
“What is wrong?” I asked in a concerned tone, placing my hand on her shoulder as we walked along the road.
“Do you think I will be accepted here? I mean, everybody is giving me this strangely uncomfortable look and it’s making me worried. What if they don’t like me?” Her voice quivered as her hand gripped mine tighter as if seeking refuge.
“Nonsense! Who told you that they don’t like you? They do. They are only giving you that look because you are new. You see, in this Pack, they don’t trust easily, so they want to take their time with you, to study you, to know who you are, to know if you won’t cause trouble,” I explained, giving her a convincing look.
And it worked well as a smile played on my face.
If only you knew the reason behind those looks, Esmeralda.
If only you knew how they were communicating to you with their eyes. To tell you to steer clear of me, but no one dared voiced it.
“Oh dear, I thought something was wrong. But I feel good now. Plus, I am not a troublemaker,” She blushed, glancing around her and waving at people, “Hello,” Her tiny voice called at them, but no one replied.
“Do you really have to do that?” I said, poking her side.
This girl was weird.
“Maybe. I love making friends and I am happy that I have started making friends in a short time,”
Surprise flashed in my eyes for a second, “Who are your friends?”
“Oh, it is just one and she is you, Phoebe. Honestly, you’ve been a good friend and sister to me. My thoughts were wrong. Maybe you are not as bad as you were rumoured,”
Frozen by surprise, I stood on a spot for a split second before recovering.
“Maybe you were not as bad as you were rumoured,” Her words played in my head, sending chills down my spine.
She couldn’t say this on her own.
Someone must be feeding her information about me.
The person better stop now or so help me.
I won’t let some bastard ruin my plans. And I didn’t mind silencing him forever.
“Who told you I was bad?” I asked, masking my shock with a chuckle.
I needed to know that bastard. But I must be careful not to make Esmeralda suspicious.
“Oh, that is a secret,” She blushed, turning her face from me shyly.
The bitch is already keeping secrets!
That bastard already told her to keep his identity secret.
Wow! That was a smart move.
Good thing I wasn’t there to cut his tongue out.
Something must be done and something must be done fast.
Grinning wickedly, as I stroked the Wolfsbane that I had smuggled into my pocket before leaving the house, an idea struck my head when I realized that we had almost gotten to the outskirts of the Pack.
“Oh, Esmeralda,” I called, trying to get her attention.
She tilted her face to meet mine and a gush of anger hit me as I observed her face.
She was more beautiful than I was. As much as I hated to admit that, it was the bloody truth.
Why must she have everything?!
What else is left for me if she has everything?
This must end here and now!
“Yes?” She answered softly, her voice sounding like the melodies of a bird.
So melodious. So innocent. So pure.
Why does she possess all the qualities I wanted?!
“Remember I told you about flowers?” I beamed in fake excitement, hoping this plan would work.
“Oh, I remember, you said your Pack has a thing for flowers and they have beautiful flowers,”
Almost there!
“Yes,” I squealed in excitement, “Come on, I have a lovely flower to show you,” I pulled her as we made our way into the woods.
Where no one will hear her scream.
I wanted to be alone with her.
“Oh my goodness, they are beautiful!” She exclaimed, turning around as she was dazed by the beautiful flowers that surrounded her, “Look at this,” She gasped, grabbing a giant sunflower and sniffing its scent.
Sniff, baby, sniff.
“I bet you haven’t seen this flower,” A dark chuckle rolled off my lips as I showed her the wolfsbane.
“That is strangely beautiful, can I have a close look?” She said, abandoning the sunflower to examine the wolfsbane in my hand.
“Sure,”
I couldn’t control the wild excitement that coursed through me as she made her way closer and closer to where I was.
The feeling of excitement was so wild that I almost jumped.
“…. have her to sniff it, the sniff of death…” Sabrina’s voice echoed in my ears.
I am about to make you proud, Sabrina.
Just an unfortunate sniff.
“Take a look at this beauty,” I said, shoving the flower into her face, concentrating it on her nose as I watched her face turn pale at once, as she began to wiggle, screaming in pain.
Die, Esmeralda, die!
